Greatest career accomplishment

Veterinarian in Charge Of: the USDA Scrapie Field Trials, National Brucellosis typing referral lab and Parrot or bird quarantine station, all of which were located at Moore Air Base, Mission, Texas during the timeframes of 1965 to 1967 and from 1970 to 1984. Then our work as Federal Veterinarian in Charge (AVIC) in Montana from Oct. of 1984 to 2004.

Timelines for some of the significant occupational events in our career would be more or less, as follows: In 1965, while showing some of our purebred Suffolk sheep at the Wyoming State Fair in Douglas, the sheep-Goat-Equine & Ectoparasite staff in Washington, D.C. called and wanted me to make a trip to Mission, Texas to see if I could set up and build a research center at Moore Air Base on some 700 acres of land covered by buffel grass, which I told them we could and that was the beginning of a special, isolated and medium security research center.

During 1967 to 1969, Sue and I transferred to College Station where I enrolled at Texas A&M University in advanced graduate school studies in virology, pathogenic bacteriology, neuro anatomy, etc. While there, Sue also picked up an advanced degree in Special Education since wives of instructors and students were also allowed to attend at that time. While at A&M, we also helped USDA produce a training film on equine infectious anemia (swamp fever) where I

played the role of an on-site track veterinarian.

In 1969, I was promoted to National Epidemiologist for the Sheep, Goat, Equine & Ectoparasite staff in Washington and was involved in the final phases of sheep scabies eradication in the U.S. at that time.

We returned to McAllen, Texas in the latter part of the year in 1970 where we resumed our work at the Mission Research station. A lot of the work at the station was not only directed at studying the natural and experimental transmission of scrapie, but also the inter species transmission of many other diseases in cooperation with the National Veterinary Services Lab., National Institute of Health (N.I H.) and other Agencies. One of the studies with N.I.H. showed the experimental transmission by inoculation of three different strains of Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease (CJD) to Niubian goats at 40 to 58 months post-inoculation but not to sheep. Also, the transmission of a Rhesus monkey line of Kuru to a Nubian goat occurred at 39 months post-inoculation, yet again not infectious to sheep, showing the unusual character of some of these potential zoonotic diseases.

In 1978, we wondered if the scrapie agent might be transmitted to cattle and if they might be susceptible to the disease. Therefore, we initiated some of the first known studies in this area that we were aware of, thus the possible encephalopathy which would become known as bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), which we – of course – were totally unaware of at the time, etc. Therefore, in January of 1979, five 8 to 10 month old calves were inoculated by multiple routes (I.C., S.C., I.M., and orally) with a 10% homogenate of Suffolk scrapie. Likewise, in Feb. of 1979, five different 8 to 10 month old calves were inoculated with Angora goat scrapie which had contracted the disease living with infected Suffolk sheep. Two of the five calves inoculated with the goat scrapie came down with clinical signs of incoordination, stilted gait and disorientation: at 27 months post-inoculation (on 6-26-81) and at 36 months post-inoculation (on 4-12-82). Similarly, only one of the five calves inoculated with the Suffolk scrapie came down with what we called bovine scrapie at 48 months post-inoculation (on 3-29-83).

We did notify the scientific community and industry of the possible encephalitic problem in cattle at this time yet we were hampered by the lack of a definitive lab test. A prion test is now being utilized to confirm these diseases. We now know that since the (BSE) epidemic in Great Britain, the scrapie agent has been implicated as a possible cause of this disease.

For further information, please refer to: “Encephalopathy in Cattle experimentally infected with the scrapie agent“, American Journal of Veterinary Research, Vol. 56, No. 5, May 1995, pages 606-612.

Most memorable event(s) from vet school days

Watching John Winemann jump "Rope" in the Anatomy Lab.

Greatest career accomplishment

After completing 3 years in a large animal practice in northen Illinois, initiated a graduate work at the University of Wisconsin. M.S. in Veterinary Reproductive Pathology, Thesis: Uterine-Amniotic Pathway of Infecting the Rabbit Fetus with Lissteria monocytogenes (1967). Ph.D. Biochemical Pathology Medical Dept. Thesis: Molecular Mechanisms of Liver Regeneration: Conversion of Cytidine to Dexocytidine in Rat Regenerating Livers (1967). Funding for these studies was provided by a grant to the Vet Science Dept. and a Post Doctorial Fellowship from the National Institutes of Health. These programs provided the base upon which I was able to use in future years. Using the academic training in both pathology and now biochemistry I worked over the next 10 years for three different pharmaceutical companies. This period allowed me to continue to practice both morphologic pathology as well as be exposed to the development pharmacokinetics. This proved to complement a new approach in the interpretation of the results obtained from animal studies that numbered in the hundreds of animals per study. It became easier to explain the results of these studies to in-house medical personnel and to the scientific personnel at the FDA. So in 1997 I resigned from my current job as Director of Drug Safety Assessment at Ortho Pharmaceutical and founded XENOS, Inc. Consultation in Drug Safety

Assessment. That's when my past training really paid off. For the next 25 years I worked with national and international pharmaceutical companies and enjoyed every moment of it. I retired in 2002.

Greatest career accomplishment

Working on Broadway in Englewood and Littleton for 48 years.

Greatest accomplishment outside of professional career

Getting through Veterinary School

Additional information

After graduation I went to work for Dr. Ramsey at Cherrelyn Animal Hospital in Englewood where I worked with small animals for 9 years.

Then the opportunity came to become part of an 8 member team to form the first animal surgical center west of the Mississippi under the leadership of Dr. Tolley in 1970. Each veterinarian had their outpatient clinic which referred to the Animal Hospital Center with 24 hour emergency service. Which also meant that we took turns sleeping at the hospital for a number of years. Joe Trimble and I shared a clinic practice for twelve years in a rented space until we built a two story building in 1982. Later Joe’s son, Phil, joined us in our practice. We had the unusual concept of not being a partnership but rather allowing each of us to have our own practice and share the physical plant and staff.

Our Animal Hospital and Surgical Center relocated to Highlands Ranch just off E-470 and now employs seven specialists and 49 employees.

I’m still active on the AHC board and keeping busy as maintenance and treasurer for our clinic on South Broadway.

Bonnie and I have been blessed with three children, Randy, Greg, and Amy and their wonderful spouses. The delight in life has been our eight grand-children who all live in Colorado until this last year. Greg and family have another year in Mexico before returning here.

We have always enjoyed traveling and count some of our best trips as active oriented. Our class reunion on a cruise to Alaska included Pat and Tom Hawn, Smiths and Phillips. Bicycling throughout Europe and New Zealand with the Philips and Dixie has been a favorite mode of sightseeing. We also biked Prince Edward Island with Phillips. However, we’ve enjoyed many Colorado golf trips plus golfing in other states which we have done with the Smiths and another time with the Klinkermans. Our latest .. this year .. was the Danube River Boat Cruise from Budapest to Bucharest and the Black Sea, all part of Eastern Europe.

August 31st Bonnie and I will be celebrating our 53rd Anniversary. We’ve had a wonderful life and feel blessed to have known so many people including our school friends and especially you, our veterinary friends.
