Last Planned Phase of Student Information System (SIS) CompletedThe third and last planned phase of development of the Student Information System (SIS) was completed in May 2013 by contracted programmer Kenneth Girrard. The development of the software started in 2008. Mr. Girrard recollected that “COM-FSM had been looking for a new student database for many years, and had made two or three attempts to buy a commercial software product but ultimately none of them succeeded, either for technical reasons or because the software companies couldn’t support an institution located in the middle of the western Pacific. COM-FSM then decided to hire a programmer to develop student database software designed to meet the unique needs of COM-FSM.” Mr. Girrard had worked many years with student data systems, and had a long history assisting COM-FSM with IT projects such as network systems, Linux server administration, and a host of lesser known but critical IT systems before agreeing to develop the SIS software. According to Mr. Girrard

the SIS software was designed around the challenges present here in the FSM, with limited internet connectivity being the biggest obstacle. Information Technology Director Gordon Segal stated that “the SIS is now a fully functional, customized system built to meet the needs of students, faculty, and other users.” The development of SIS will “never really be finished, however.” He emphasized that this particular planned phase has come to a close, but the SIS itself will continue to grow and adapt. With all the planned phases implemented successfully, he anticipates there will be further needs as change continues for the college. “It all depends on what our needs are and how they evolve.”

SIS developer Kenneth Girrard.
