WHAT ARE SOME OF THE ADVANTAGES OF TRANSFERRING?

• Save a lot of $$$

• Can be easier to get accepted to highly selective schools (like UC Berkeley) as a transfer student than as a freshman

• This is especially true in the UC and CSU system thanks to the California Master Plan for Education. Not always as true for private or out of state schools.

• Students have more time to research and decide on what university they would like to attend.

• California Community Colleges focus on teaching, not research like many universities. More likely to be able to interact with your professors.

• Allows a student time to decide on degree or career preparation – or both

ARE COMMUNITY COLLEGE STUDENTS AS SUCCESSFUL AS STUDENTS WHO START AT A FOUR YEAR SCHOOL?

ABSOLUTELY! • On average, community college students do as well as and in some cases

better than students who started as freshmen at four-year schools. According to Community College League of California, 55% of CSU graduates and 28% of UC graduates began their college years at a community college - and, upon transferring obtained GPAs equal to, or better than, "native" UC or CSU students.

• Also, transfer students from a California Community College are given preference over students transferring from other schools.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN ASSOCIATE’S DEGREE AND A BACHELOR’S DEGREE?

• An associate’s degree is a two-year degree granted by a community college to students who complete a specified program of study, usually totaling 60 semester units.

• A bachelor’s degree (or baccalaureate) is a four-year degree granted by a college or university to students who complete at least 120 semester units. Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science Degrees are offered by the California State Universities, the University of California and many private four-year colleges and universities.

CAN YOU ONLY TRANSFER TO A UC OR CSU?

TRANSFER POSSIBILITIES ABOUND!• College of Marin students have transferred to many different

four year institutions:• In State Private Schools like Dominican, St. Mary’s, USF, Santa Clara

University, Mills College, Menlo College, and more

• Our of State Schools like University of Washington, Arizona State University, University of Idaho, University of Hawaii, and more.

• It takes a bit more research to make sure your courses will transfer, but we can help you along the way.

IN HIGH SCHOOL THERE ARE A-G REQUIREMENTS. IS SOMETHING LIKE THAT REQUIRED TO TRANSFER?

• The bare minimum needed to transfer:• 60 transferable units

• How long will that take? What if I need to take a basic skills class?

• UC = two transferable English classes with a C or better, one transferable math course, four transferable courses from at least two of the following: arts & humanities, social & behavioral sciences, and physical an biological sciences

• CSU = the Golden Four: Oral Communication (Speech), Written Communication (Engl 150), Critical Thinking, and one transferable math course

• IGETC (Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum)

• CSU Breadth General Education

YES!

• Depending on your major and the school you would like to transfer to, there may be other requirements.

IS THERE A MINIMUM GPA NEEDED TO TRANSFER?

YES

• UCs: 2.4 for CA residents, 2.8 for non-residents

• CSUs: 2.0 for CA residents, 2.4 for non-residents

• Out of State and Private schools: Will vary school by school, will need to research individually

WILL A UNIVERSITY NEED TO KNOW YOUR SAT SCORES OR HIGH SCHOOL GRADES WHEN I APPLY TO TRANSFER?

• UCs and CSUs will not ask for your SAT scores or high school grades (except for the foreign language requirement)

• Some In State Private schools and Out of State schools might ask for your SAT scores and high school grades. Research their requirements to apply well before the application is due.

• You will need to report all colleges and universities ever attended on your applications

WHAT IS A MAJOR?

• A major is a program of study which leads to a degree. Major can also be defined as the subject area in which a student chooses to focus their education to gain the greatest depth of knowledge.

CAN YOU TRANSFER WITH AN UNDECLARED MAJOR?

NO.

YOU KNOW YOU WANT TO TRANSFER. WHEN SHOULD YOU MEET WITH A COUNSELOR OR GO TO THE TRANSFER & CAREER CENTER?

NOW!

• The sooner the better

• Keep meeting with your counselor and updating your education plan every semester

• Go to the Transfer & Career Center to research your options (majors, schools, and careers), the varying requirements, and to stay updated on information

• Join the Transfer Club – a group of students who make it their mission to be up to date with transfer information and work to organize campus tours of many different universities

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO GET THE MOST OF MY TIME AT A COMMUNITY COLLEGE?

GET INVOLVED! GET LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE. ENJOY MORE THAN JUST THE CLASSROOM

• Join a club like AGS or Transfer Club

• Join Associated Students (ASCOM)

• Volunteer

• Get an internship

• Take a class that’s part of a learning community – like Puente

• Take advantage of the smaller classes and get to know your instructors

• Know what resources are available to you – DSPS, EOPS, CARE, Puente, Job Placement Office, Transfer & Career Center, Counseling, and more

HOW CAN YOU AFFORD TO TRANSFER TO A UNIVERSITY?

• UC has the Blue & Gold program

• CSUs and UCs offer a Middle Class scholarship

• Just file for your FAFSA by March 2nd of every year

• You can compare your financial aid packages before you decide to go to the school
