Key Steps IN PROGRESS
You’re Hired
Review Department Operating Paper
Discussions with Chair and Colleagues about departmental expectations for tenure and promotion
Work with a CoLA Mentor
Ongoing Tracking -- Annual Review Process• Chairs should discuss progress toward tenure.• Schedule a meeting with the Dean.
What counts on Your cv?
Entire record is reviewed.
Work since hire or last promotion is most critical.
Work since hire or last promotion goes on “grid.”
CoLA’s offer letter language: Scholarly work completed prior to taking this appointment
will be considered as part of the tenure and promotion case. Such a prior record may complement but not substitute for a record of academic achievement at SIUC, the latter being essential.
Overall trajectory and pattern of work is critical.
what is Early promotion?
Only one try at tenure during probationary period• Usually only promotion review is requested in an early
request.
For early promotion to Associate Professor, tenure automatically follows promotion.
Department, College, and Provost want to see evidence of productivity at SIUC.
Discuss pre-SIUC work with Chair, note Dean’s annual review letter, and meet with the Dean.
How early is “Too Early” ?
How many voters?
• Insufficient number of colleagues in department at required academic rank• Assistant Associate: At least 3 individuals• Associate Full: At least 3, but candidate
may request 5.
• Chair appoints appropriate colleagues from other departments.
• Chair consults with candidate in generating ideas for outside members.
Who votes and how often?
• Department Chair• Usually attends departmental P&T committee
meeting, but doesn’t vote and is not a member of the committee.
• Makes independent recommendation
• College P&T Committee• Any member of the College P&T committee from
the candidate’s department recuses himself or herself from all discussion and does not vote.
External reviewers
• Letters inform reputation and standing in field.
• Letter-writers should NOT be collaborators, friends, or former professors.
• Letter writers should have national or international recognition in field.
• Letter writers invited by chair, with input from candidate
• Candidate chooses to waive or not waive access to letters (prior to letter solicitation).
• 5-6 letters generally suffice
When is the dossier finalized?
Once dossier is submitted for departmental-level review, it is Closed.
No additional material can be added except for Chair’s letter, Dean’s letter, and if desired faculty rebuttal letter.
Faculty member may pull or withdraw a dossier once it has begun the review process.
Review process otherwise continues from Department to College to Provost to Board of Trustees.
