TODAY'S SPEAKER

The Honorable Joseph W. Hatchett, who speaks today at the invitation of the graduating class, was appointed to the Supreme Court of Florida this summer and assumed his duties on the state's highest court September 2, 1975.

Before his appointment, he served as an Assistant United States Attorney for more than four years followed by his appointment as U. S. Magistrate for the Midd le District of Florida, a post he held for five years.

Justice Hatchett started his career in practice in 1959 in Daytona Beach, and engaged in criminal, civil, civil rights, and administrative law matters until his entry into government service seven years later.

He is a native of Clearwater, graduated from Florido A & M University, and served two years as a Lieutenant in the U. S. Army Artillery. He rece ived his law degree from Howard University, Washington, D. C., in 1959.

CANDIDA TES FOR MASTER OF LAWS IN TAXATION

The degree Master of Laws in Taxation is awarded to students who, ofter earning the Juris Doctor degree and in some cases practicing for one or many years, have undertaken a year' s intensive graduate instruction. The College of Law offers a specialized graduai e tax curriculum for this purpose. Candidates for the degree are required to earn O "B" average in all graduate work attempted.

UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA LAW REVIEW-Appreciation for the members of the Editorial Board elected on the basis of scholarship and past performance in law review work, who have given of their time and service in publishing the Law Review, receiving intensive training in legal research, organization, analysis, and style.

PRACTICE COURT AWARD-Given to the outstanding participants in the practice court program, in honor of the

late Judge Hal W. Adams.

UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA MOOT COURT TEAM-Appreciation for the members of the Moot Court Team, "':'ho, having been selected through the Campbell Thornal Competition, represented the College of Law in inter­collegiate moot court contests, gaining invaluable experience in the art of appellate advocacy.

UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL MOOT COURT TEAM-Appreciation for the members of the lnter­nationa I Moot Court T earn who represented the College of Law in the Phi Ii p C. Jess up intercollegiate moot court competition while gaining experience in the areas of international law research and appellate advocacy.

UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA HONOR COURT-Recognition of those students who have given their time and service to the University of Florida Honor Court.

J.M.B.A. CITATION-Appreciation for those students who have contributed outstanding service to the John Marshall Bar Association and the College of Law.

OUTSTANDING ALUMNUS AWARD-In recognition and appreciation of devotion and service to the College of Law, the legal profession, and the State of Florida.

CENTER FOR GOVERNMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY-The Center for Governmental Responsibility is a privately funded organization housed at the Holland Law Center committed to the goal of seeking out and implementing ways of making government more accountable to its citizens. The Center provides students with a unique oppor­tunity to combine academic research with first-hand observation of the way laws are made, administered, and tested in the courts. Along with studying published materials, students are sent to Washington, D.C., and other centers of government, to conduct persona I interviews. Students prepare reports of their i nvesti gat ions, draft model legislation, and assist in the writing of amicus briefs.

I will maintain the confidence and preserve inviolate the secrets of my client, and will accept no compensa­tion in connection with his business except from him or with his knowledge and approval;

I will abstain from all offensive personalities and advance no fact prejudicial to the honor or reputation of a party or witness, unless required by the ;ustice of the cause with which I am charged;

I will never reject, from any consideration personal to myself, the cause of the defenseless or oppressed, or delay any man's cause for lucre or malice. So Help Me God.
