“to
teach
in a
global society…” A student or graduate exhibiting the characteristics of a Murray State University graduate has the values and beliefs to
apply the principle of localization, customization to a specific region, to successfully teach in a global society. Essential
to a global society is the value and belief in the following tenets: a multicultural society; diversity and inclusion; and,
internationalization.
Multicultural Society
T o teach in a global society students must develop and understand that accomplishments and greater results depend on the attitudes, understanding and how information technology, human services and social development
determines what can be done and the process by which it can be achieved in today’s global society.
Diversity and Inclusion
T o teach in a global society students must value and understand that cultural diversity may aid communication between people of different backgrounds and lifestyles, leading to greater knowledge, understanding, and peaceful
coexistence. A global society should: focus on people and developing an inclusive multicultural environment; promote
diversity at every level; and, strive for inclusiveness where everyone can make a difference by contributing unique
talents, perspectives and life experiences.
Internationalization Internationalization is the development of a process or product ensuring that it can be easily adapted to a specific local
language and culture or “localization” to meet most of the needs of an international community. After a decade of
discussion of globalization and its impact, more and more colleges and universities are adding institutional internation-
alization to the mission statement and the list of institutional priorities. Reports, awards and collaborative efforts
underscore the point that study abroad clearly plays a large part, often a major role, in institutional internationalization.
