College of Education University of Missouri T he MU art education program is designed to provide students with strong backgrounds in the study of art education and the visual arts. Coursework is structured to develop expertise in studio art, art history and pedagogy. Art teacher candidates receive extensive training in the delivery of comprehensive instruction in the production, study, interpretation and evaluation of art and culture. Preservice art education students are provided many authentic opportunities to apply theory to practice and hone their skills through field experiences in a variety of settings, including local art classrooms and art museums. The program culminates in a student teaching internship where students assume full responsibility as effective, responsive, professional art educators. The art education program also attracts outstanding K–12 educators and artists into graduate programs offering an M Ed degree that can include teacher certification and a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction in art education. Our graduate students receive accolades, awards, and recognitions for their contributions to teacher education research. Recent graduates of our program have gone on to careers in museum education; community-based arts education and administration; projects in arts-based school reform; and to colleges and higher education institutions across the country — all with fresh insight for incorporating the arts into our global society. Art Education Masters Degree Programs at MizzouThe University of Missouri Art Education Masters Degree program offers art teachers an opportunity to critically examine issues in visual art education through a balanced investigation into theory and practice. This graduate program integrates the campus learning community with the classroom context for the purpose of inquiry, research, and reflection into art education. Art teachers will examine contemporary topics, explore studio experiences as an artist-teacher, and conduct authentic research in their school or other community environments. The coursework includes investigations into artistic thinking and visual culture that interconnects our multi-modal, image rich world into the 21st century.

M Ed in Art EducationThis 32-hour program is intended for certified art teachers wanting to obtain an advanced degree in art education.

M Ed and Missouri Art Teaching CertificationThis program is intended for those who have a background in art and would like to earn Missouri certification to teach art as part of a masters degree program.

M Ed Hybrid Online Masters Degree Program for Practicing Art Teachers This 32-hour program is intended for practicing teachers who live a distance from the MU campus and choose to participate in a low-residency program that is primarily online.
