Alumni Council News

A Note from CAHP Alumni Council President Davis & Dean Meyer

New Year Greetings to You!

As we progress into 2019, we wanted to share exciting news from UNMC with you. Construction is underway on the new Dr. Edwin Davis & Dorothy Balbach Davis Global Center for Advanced Interprofessional Learning. With a grand opening scheduled for September 2019, the Davis Global Center will become the new headquarters for iEXCEL.

The unique design of the building promotes interdisciplinary collaboration, team training and the ability to practice the transfer of care throughout the current health care system. iExcel creates a transformative model for the education of health care professionals through a paradigm shift away from the traditional “see one, do one, teach one” model of training - to a skills-based (experiential) education model that is supported by a reliable competency assessment framework. This model is intended to train health care professionals, at all levels of training and in all health care

disciplines, to meet the inevitable changes in medicine that will occur over a lifetime of clinical practice. The model includes learning new techniques and procedures and adopting new technologies – in safe, simulated health care settings. The Davis Global Center will help advance the future of health care. Our best to you,

Sincerely,

Physician Assistant Students & Faculty Meet with Governor Ricketts

On October 15, in celebration of Physician Assistant Week, students and faculty from the UNMC program met with Governor Pete Ricketts at the Nebraska Capital. He signed a proclamation celebrating the profession and recognizing the contributions PAs have on health care.

Before the proclamation ceremony, members of the PA program had the opportunity to meet privately with Gov. Ricketts. Seven department members along with four students discussed the development of the UNMC program through funding from the legislature in 1971 (led by then-Sen. Loren Schmidt), the mission of the program to provide care for underserved Nebraska populations, and the relationship between the UNMC program and the military Interservice Physician Assistant Program (IPAP). Genetic Counseling Program Receives Accreditation UNMC's new Genetic Counseling program has received accreditation effective January 31, 2019. The program is a unique partnership between the College of Allied Health Professions, the Munroe-Meyer Institute, and several community partners. Genetic Counselors serve as genetics experts and provide information to families and providers. They are translators of genetic information and use that knowledge to teach others. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a growth rate of 29 percent for genetic counseling positions through 2026. Coincidentally, a recent professional survey showed that about 87% of genetic counselors accept a position before graduation. The first class at UNMC will start in the fall of 2019. Holly Zimmerman serves as Director of the program.

UNMC's Online Master of Physician Assistant Studies Gets National Recognition

UNMC's online master of physician assistant studies has been named No. 4 in the country for such programs by onlinemasters.com, a nonprofit dedicated to ranking online degree programs. UNMC was praised as the online PA program with the most hands-on clinical experience. Online Masters said 21 industry experts, hiring managers, current students and alumni were consulted when ranking the nation's programs. Pace University ranked first, Yale University ranked second, and Big Ten peer University of Wisconsin-Madison was seventh in Online Masters' 2019 PA program rankings.

"The PA department is meeting the needs of the next generation of students by providing an innovative approach to the delivery of quality educational content."

UNMC history: Reihart a pioneer among Nebraska women scientists

In 1923, Helen Wyandt Reihart was recruited to establish a clinical laboratory at the University of Nebraska Hospital for the University of Nebraska College of Medicine. Reihart was the first medical technologist in the state of Nebraska and the first medical technologist to join the faculty of the University of Nebraska College of Medicine. She taught clinical pathology, supervised the clinical clerks' lab work, and directed medical and nursing students in the dispensary and laboratory.

In 1928, she was one the first individuals in the nation to receive certification and registration as a medical technologist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists Board of Registry. The University of Nebraska Medical Technology training program, founded by Reihart in the 1930s, began with just two students. Thanks to Reihart's work, the program was accredited in 1937-38. Graduates of the program went on to set up laboratories in other Nebraska hospitals. Read more.
