T he Boarder Admissions Meeng took place on Monday aſternoon. As you all know, it is an exercise that is both me-consuming and exacng. We are, aſter all, deciding the educaonal fate of 200-odd expectant youngsters, and the selec- on needs to be as accurate as possible. Rep- resentaves from the Old Boys', Boarder Par- ents' Commiee, Markeng Department, Sport, Academics and Cultural Affairs, as well the Form 2 HODs, were present. We received approximately 190 applicaons, from 75 schools, for the 76 available beds. It is very sad to have to turn away so many boys of calibre, as they are producing the goods at primary school level. We will create a waing list, and we will hopefully be able to accom- modate some of those who are disappointed. The e-mails and phone calls will start soon from prospecve parents who are disappoint- ed that their sons have not been accepted into the school for 2014. The criterion is simp- ly one of merit in terms of academic, sporng, and cultural potenal. In this way we can be objecve and take emoon out of the equa- on. At a later stage, when working through the waing list, we are comfortable with look- ing at other dynamics. The Fourth Formers were taken out of a com- fort-zone last week when they parcipated in the "Open Hearts Goodwill Project", iniated and organised by Dee Dickens and our teach- er in charge of Life Orientaon, Philippa Lowe. Divided into groups, boys were tasked to create one-on-one situaons with people less fortunate than themselves. The places visited included three crèches, two old-age homes, an instuon for mentally-challenged children, a centre for the Blind and Deaf, a hospice, and two schools. It was a humbling experience for both the boys and the 25 Col- lege staff members. As expected, our pupils were a true credit to the school. The Maritzburg College 150th Winter Sports Fesval starts on Saturday and it promises to be a week of top-class hockey and rugby at first-team level. The College community is encouraged to support this event as we are showcasing our school to many visitors who have had no interacon with us in the past. At the same me we will be welcoming back schools that have been regular visitors over the years, and that are very similar to College in culture and ethos. The first term has been a good one for the school. Understandably, an emphasis was placed on the 150th celebraons, and, to our relief, every event was a resounding success. The College boys responded superbly to the challenges and, in the end, appear to have thrived under the spotlight. The Second Form group has seled in well, and we are pleased with the progress the boys have made in the classroom and on the sports field. There is a great deal of potenal in this group. The prefects have played a ma- jor role in this regard. There have been a few minor discipline problems, but when one considers that 385 boarders live together on the premises for nearly 10 months of the year, and nearly 1200 boys roam the corri- dors every day, we can be sasfied with the end result. It will be of comfort to our parents to know that it was 'all systems go' at the start of this term. The academics have been sound and there have been full cultural and sporng programmes. Added to this, we have had a strong and sensible prefect leadership. I reassure our parents that the Governing Body and the College staff are commied to maintaining the high standards that are ex- pected of a school like Maritzburg College. We will ensure that we work in partnership with you, and, if you have any concerns, you are welcome to work through the channels to resolve any tensions. Have a relaxed holiday and enjoy some quali- ty me with your children. Maritzburg College hosted the South

African Society of Music Teachers

Schools’ Choir Festival in the Alan Paton

Hall.

Six schools took part in this popular

annual event on the choir calendar. The

schools involved were The Wykeham

Collegiate, St Johns DSG, Carter High

School, Northern Park Primary, Pelham

Primary and Maritzburg College.

The aim of the festival is to promote

and showcase choral singing in both

primary and secondary schools and the

pupils in all the choirs rose to the occa-

sion this year with singing of a very high

standard.

The audience certainly showed their

appreciation with a standing ovation at

the end and enthusiastic applause

throughout.

waves’ on the swimming front. From left to right:

In stark contrast to our previous Foundation

Golf Day perfect weather greeted the full

field of golfers who tee-ed up in support of

the College Foundation on Friday 15th March

at the Victoria Country Club in Pietermaritz-

burg.

This annual golf day is hosted by the Maritz-

burg College Foundation and all funds raised

through this event are used to support vari-

ous initiatives benefitting Maritzburg College.

The warm weather was offset by sufficient

“watering holes” which kept all our golfers

well hydrated! A heartfelt “Thank You” to our

sponsors for their enthusiasm and effort in

setting up and manning these sponsored

holes:

Merensky, Redfern & Findlay Attorneys,

BrandX, Toyota Forklift, Xtec PMB, Hay&Scott

Attorneys, Frankies, First Technology, Bo’s

Plant Hire.

The Foundation’s “Chip4Charity” initiative

welcomed the golfers to the par 3 eighth hole

where our Director of Rugby, Ryan Strudwick,

and a handful of his 1st XV charges were on

hand to provide some

uniquely Red,Black,White

refreshments and some valuable insight on

club selection and pin placement!

For a “nominal fee” golfers were able to pur-

chase a mulligan from Ryan Strudwick who

then joined in and played the hole as an

“impact player”. Many a 4 ball were grateful

for these fresh legs and managed to boost

their scores with the help of Ryan’s excep-

tional knowledge of the hole and playing

conditions!

Thank you to all the golfers who supported

the “Chip4Charity” drive and helped College

Rugby raise an impressive amount of funds

for their coffers!

Judging by the warm reception and hearty

College banter in the clubhouse after the

close of play, a good day was had by all.

Thank you to the Victoria Country Club for

the use of their wonderful facilities and to all

our College faithful who came out in support

of the Foundation! We hope to see all of you

back again next year!
