What is College for Kids and Teens?

College for Kids and Teens (CFK/CFT), through the School of Continuing Education (SCE), is a hands-on enrichment program for students entering grades K5-12 who have high academic potential, motivation and talent. Established in 1980, the program consists of one- and two-week classes in Creative Arts, Humanities/Social Sciences, Languages & Cultures, Math & Computers, and Science. Taught by UW system faculty or highly qualified and experienced instructors, all programs provide an “academic edge,” and class sizes are limited to 16 students unless otherwise noted.

When and Where? Classes are held Mon-Fri, June 11-Aug 10 on the UWM campus, unless otherwise noted. Specific class dates/times are included in course descriptions.

Registration Policy Once your child or teen is registered there are no refunds or transfers. Refunds are made only for classes canceled by CFK/CFT.

How Do I Register? Registration opens Jan 16, 2018 at 10am. Call, fax in your registration, or go online to uwm.edu/sce-kids to enroll.

(Note: Mailed registrations add several days to the registration process and lessen the likelihood of availability in your desired class.)

Confirmation of Registration Your receipt and parental consent forms will be emailed to you for completion and return. If you do not provide an email address, you will receive them by mail. You may also visit uwm.edu/sce-kids to download consent forms right away. All participants are encouraged to have their own health insurance, as only limited secondary accident insurance is provided by the University.

Please note: Confirmation dates reflect the entire summer program – June 11-Aug 10. Please refer to the catalog or website for specific dates and times of your registered classes.

Please Note

• Kindergartners must be five years old by June 11, 2018 and must have prior five-days-a-week school experience to participate in our program. This rule will be strictly enforced and children who do not meet this requirement will be subject to immediate withdrawal without a refund given.

• When registering for CFK and CFT, use next year’s grade level.

• Some classes are designed for a broader range of students (e.g. grades 6-12), and others are more specifically targeted – look for grade levels listed next to each program number.

• Select courses have a $5-25 computer lab or material fee included in the price.

• For chemistry classes, closed toe shoes must be worn at all times, no flip flops or sandals.

• For dance and theater classes, students must bring another pair of shoes to change into in order to participate. Please make sure your child brings appropriate shoes to class each day, no flip flops or sandals.

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH:

Classes that do not reach sufficient enrollment by May 7th will be cancelled. Please register before this date to ensure classes run.

Before and After CareTo make things easier for students and parents, we offer supervised care in the Union Terrace before and after the program day, for a minimal charge. Chaperoning children to or from class is included in the fee. Come early or stay late. You must sign up for the full week.

• Before Care: 7:30-9am – $25/week or $45/two-week session

• After Care: 4-5:30pm – $25/week or $45/two-week session

Class Descriptions Classes are organized by grade level as well as by subject area. Courses that are offered for multiple grade levels will only be listed once. The curriculum for these courses increases in complexity for each grade level.

Please use the grid below to organize your family’s schedule, and help prevent registering a child for two classes at the same time.

Name(s)______________________________________________________________________

• Please note: CFK/CFT only supervises registered students while they are in class or before/after care. Students enrolled in back-to-back classes or before/after care will be chaperoned to their next destination. No extended supervision (longer than the 30 minutes between consecutive class times) is available between 9am and 4pm.

• Please have your child bring a copy of this schedule to class each day so we can make sure they are always in the right place.

• New this year - we are offering another Discovery Camp (Discovery Camp Plus) to accommodate earlier dismissal for local school districts.

THE UWM WRITING PROJECT SPECIAL PROGRAM

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Writing Project (UWMWP) is an active chapter of the National Writing Project (NWP). Founded in 1974, NWP’s ongoing mission is to provide writing teachers resources and training in order to cultivate new methods of teaching, research on teaching, and a passionately professional writing community. Teacher-Consultants (TCs) participate in an accredited, graduate-level Summer Institute, as well as smaller in-services throughout the year. What makes TCs unique is their pledge and dedication to writing. This passion includes creating news ways to inspire writers of all ages and a personal commitment to their own writing practices.

College for Kids/Teens’ (CFK/T) partnership with the UWMWP allows student writers an opportunity for students to work with three professionally and academically trained TCs per class! These instructors utilize materials from the NWP to create a supportive and engaged writing community, which provides students with a week of invigorating writing experience. Furthermore, both CFK/T and the UWMWP share the goal of community building, and so the TCs selected to work each week are passionate writers from the Metro-Milwaukee community.

The UWM Writing Project – Young Writers’ AcademyBack by popular demand, this University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Writing Project’s (UWMWP) camp is for aspiring writers who are entering grades 6th through 8th. During the camp, we meet each day in writing groups. This camp is facilitated by Teacher-Consultants (TCs) experienced writers and teachers who are involved in the UWMWP—and these TCs have a common goal of inspiring the imaginations and composition skills of young writers! We will write daily in a creative, supportive environment. While writers of all abilities are welcome, we will focus on some introductory concepts as well as more nuanced, stylistic skills.

During the Young Writers’ Academy, student writers will:

• Explore a variety of genres, including poetry, short fiction, essay/nonfiction writing, and more.

• Receive individual instruction and feedback in small groups from UWMWP TCs.

• Learn introductory and foundational writing techniques used by professional writers.

• Meet and share writing with young writers from all around the state and country.

• Engage in the entire writing process: brainstorming, drafting, revising, and editing.

Because this writing academy is sponsored by the UWMWP, we utilize a strong curriculum anchored by low teacher-to-student ratios (1 instructor for every 5 or 6 students). This provides us the opportunity to build an authentic rapport with student writers, which ultimately allows us to foster a stronger writing community.

The Young Writers’ Academy culminates in a celebration of writing at the end of the week, where students are encouraged to share their favorite pieces! New and returning participants are welcomed to attend!

The UWM Writing Project - Introductory Teen Writing AcademySponsored by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Writing Project, this writing class is designed specifically for teen students who are interested in practicing writing across three genres: Fiction, Poetry, and Non-Fiction/Essay. These classes are facilitated by experienced writers and teachers—trained Teacher-Consultants with the UWM Writing Project—who will introduce writing activities that are fun, helpful, and inspiring to the imagination.

During the Introductory Teen Writing Academy, student writers will:

• Explore concepts from three genres, including poetry, short fiction, and creative nonfiction/essay

• Choose two genres and produce polished written pieces

• Learn writing techniques used by professional writers

• Receive individual instruction and response in small groups

• Cultivate an initial writing process: brainstorming, free writing, drafting, and revising

• Celebrate writing with a culminating community event designed to share writing with parents, teachers and peers

Since this is a writing academy sponsored by the UWM Writing Project, we utilize a strong curriculum anchored by low teacher-to-student ratios (1 instructor for every 5 or 6 students). This allows us the opportunity to know writers as individuals and foster a stronger writing community.

This camp is open to all students, grades 9-12, who are interested in writing, even if they have not participated in other writing programs (some background in writing is welcomed and encouraged but not mandatory). Students can bring previous work but will spend the week focusing on new writing projects that fit within our three genres.

SPECIAL WEEK-LONG WRITING PROGRAM

Creative Writing Camp for Teens: Advanced Writing AcademyThis week-long writing camp is for any high school writer who would like to learn and practice advanced writing techniques related to fiction, poetry, and various academic genres of writing. This camp will include an overview of those three genres as well as activities that will help with invention, feedback, revision, and publishing. In addition, a professional instructor who is interested in teaching and writing will cover the following:

• Reading samples from fiction, poetry, and academic writing genres.

• Writing within each genre with focus placed upon specific, advanced techniques.

• How to warm up the writing brain with fun and engaging opening writing activities.

• Practicing writing techniques in a supportive and exploratory environment.

• Peer review feedback from fellow teen writers and the instructor.

• An overview on how to and where to submit work for publication.

While writers who have experience in other writing workshops and camps are the target audience for this camp, no experience is necessary for those students who also want to join our strong community and learn for the first time. Participants will receive a personal journal to write in throughout the week and are encouraged to bring laptops or portable writing devices that will help them type out their work.

The week will also culminate with an open sharing event where students can invite family and friends to hear the work cultivated throughout the camp by all writers. If you’re interested in a fun and supportive writing environment, please come join our writing community!

Marine Mussel Exploration - One-Week WATER Field Adventure Freshwater Ecosystem & Investigative Reporting for 5th-8th Graders

During the last 20 years the Great Lakes Basin and the surrounding freshwater areas have been inundated by two non-native dreissenid mussels, the zebra mussel and the quagga mussel. Millions of these mussels have crowded out native species, cleared the water column and posed a danger to the water system. We’ll collect and analyze water quality data in the Milwaukee River, the river basin, an inland lake, and in Lake Michigan in an effort to locate the dreaded invaders and identify the abiotic and biotic factors that support them. This field based adventure will have students outside each day to collect data using a variety of scientific instruments, wading in rivers, snorkeling in a quarry, and boarding the R/V Neeskay (the School of Freshwater Sciences’ research vessel) to travel on Lake Michigan. Students should be comfortable in and around water and prepared to be outdoors for the majority of our time.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Skip Ahead!Advanced check-in: June 1-8, 9am-4pm. Avoid the long lines and get acquainted with campus early – stop by our office located in the Union, room W179. Please call 414-227-3360 (before June 1) or 414-940-1896 (after June 1) for other questions.

Check-InCheck in at the Union Terrace on your child’s first day. Here, we will make sure you’ve filled out all the proper paperwork, and then students will receive their CFK/CFT drawstring backpacks and wristbands. It is helpful to bring your confirmation receipt with you on the first day. Please note: You only need to do this one time during the summer on your first day of your first class. Please arrive 15-30 minutes before your class start time in order to get checked in and start class on time. If a large number of students arrive right before class start time to check in there will be a significant delay in getting students to their class and receiving the full instruction.

Age requirementKindergartners must be five years old by June 11, and must have prior five-days-a-week school experience to participate in our program. This rule will be strictly enforced and children who do not meet this requirement will be subject to immediate withdrawal with no refund given.

Pickup & DropoffPickup and dropoff are at the Union Circle, 2200 E. Kenwood Blvd., or inside the Union Terrace (SW corner on the ground floor).

Instructors will bring their students to the Union Terrace at the end of class time. You must pick your child up within 15 minutes (e.g. if class ends at 4pm, pickup must be no later than 4:15pm). Students will be allowed to wait for their ride either inside the Union Terrace or outside at the circle drive. Please make sure your child knows where they are meeting you.

You will be charged $10 for every 15 minutes past the pickup time (e.g. 4:16-4:31pm would be $10; 4:32-4:47pm would be $20, and so on). If your child is not picked up within one hour, CFK/CFT will contact the UWM police. Your child will not be allowed to return to classes until the fee has been paid.

Only students who have a signed parental release form granting them permission to leave unattended will be able to leave without an adult. If your child is to go home on their own, make sure you sign that form. These students will be given orange wristbands to wear throughout the program.

If you need to pick up your child early or drop them off late, you will need to go directly to the classroom. Please do not drop children off at the Union if you are running late. If you do not see a staff member standing outside the Union, students and instructors have already left, and you will need to take your child to his/her classroom. If you do not know the classroom location, please call our office at 414-940-1896 or visit the Union information desk – located on the ground floor.

WristbandsWristbands are given out on the first day of a session, and are to be worn every day. If your child is enrolled in more than one session, he/she can receive a new band at the beginning of each session. Please bring the old wristband back in order to get a new one. It is your responsibility to make sure your child wears the wristband every day. The colors indicate to our staff what privileges each child has, such as leaving campus unattended or not being included in pictures. Children are not allowed to participate in class unless they are wearing a wristband to verify that they are enrolled.

The cost to replace the wristbands is $20 for the orange and $3 for all others. (If you need to take it off for any reason, please bring it back and it will be replaced for free.)

Meals Lunch and snacks are not included. Please provide your child with a bag lunch and/or snack each day. Only students that have permission to leave unattended (orange wristband) will be able to purchase food on campus.

Drawstring Backpacks! All participants will receive a FREE CFK/CFT drawstring backpack – handed out at check in.

What Not To BringPlease do not bring games, toys, trading cards, electronic devices and other similar materials to classes, unless the instructor has requested you to do so. CFK/CFT is not responsible for lost, broken or missing items.

Disciplinary InformationDisruptive students are taken to the CFK/CFT office and their parents are notified. Continued disruption results in removal from the program.

Children with Special ConcernsIf your child has special needs or requires medication during class, please contact us before enrolling to fill out additional paperwork. This will ensure that we can address all of your concerns.

Mail List RequestsTo update your name and address, remove your name from our mailing list, or eliminate duplicate mailings, call 414-227-3186. Please refer to your name and address exactly as it appears on the mailing label. Or, fill out the form on our website at sce-kids.uwm.edu.

Other Important InformationDo not leave your car unattended in the Union circle drive, you will be ticketed by campus police and there is nothing CFK/CFT can do about it! A parking ramp is available just to the east of the driveway. Street parking is also available.

If students are enrolled in back-to-back classes they will be supervised in the Union Terrace Room, unless you have given them permission to be unattended.

ScholarshipsNeeds-Based: To be eligible for a limited number of needs-based scholarships, student must be entering grades K5-5 and be eligible for the free or reduced lunch program. Needs-based recipients will be notified by phone the 1st week of May.
