How do I Find Out More?1. Counseling Office: Check there forcollege planning guides and otherinformation, including web sites. Someof our favorites:
For scholarship & financial aidinfo
finaid.org, collegenet.com/mach25,and fastweb.com
For testing infoets.org, act.org and collegeboard.com
For a virtual college tourcampustours.com
For colleges with a desiredmajor
petersons.com
2. College Guides: There are severalguides that do a good job comparingcolleges:
• The Insiders Guide to Colleges• Barrons’ Profiles of American Colleges
• The College Handbook • Fiske Guide to Colleges• Choosing the Right College• Colleges That Change Lives: 40 Schools You Should Know About Even If You’re Not A Straight-A Student
• The Unofficial Unbiased Guide to the 331 Most Interesting Colleges
3. Course Catalogs: They will giveyou an idea of what’s available but arenot the best way to compare schools.Courses listed may be very differentfrom how they’re described or nolonger offered.
At some schools, student organizationsrank courses and professors. If youvisit a school, try to find such ranking. Itcould give you a more realistic idea ofwhat courses-and the people whoteach them-are really like.
4. College Visit: Try to make at leastone visit when school is in session. Inaddition to the formal interview andtour, arrange to sleep in a dorm andeat in the dining hall. Visit someclasses, attend a game and visit thestudent union. Talk to as manystudents as possible toobtain different perspectives.
5. Your Counselor: A big part of yourschool counselor's job is to help withcollege selection. The more yourcounselor knows you and your collegeneeds, the more they can help.
6. Your instincts: Above everythingelse, trust your instincts. Ifsomething tells you this is not the rightplace, it’s probably not. Choose aschool where you can picture yourselfliving, learning and successfullycompleting your degree.
Honors ProgramsAs the cost of education rises, studentsare finding an alternative to a big nameschool in the honors programs offeredat many state universities. Theseprograms can offer the best of bothworlds: the class size and studentteacher ratio of a small college with theresources and facilities of a large research institution.
Many honors programs give studentsthe option of living with other honorsstudents and some even putclassrooms and faculty offices in thebuilding where the students live.
Many institutions entice students withstipends and scholarships, anopportunity worth considering.
