PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

The vision of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences reads: "To be a leading unit within the University that promotes academic achievement and excellence in teaching, training, research and consultancy in the Humanities and Social Sciences". Pursuant to this vision, the College constantly monitors developments in its environment and in the world at large. This provides it with societal trends and changes both at home and abroad. The awareness gained enables the College to respond to trends and changes by introducing new academic programmes or modifying existing ones to meet current demand.

The College is always striving to improve the contents of its courses as well as the methods of delivery. In a continuing exercise, eighteen computer laboratories have been created across the college during the last two years. Connectivity of lecturers' offices to the Internet is also going on. There are measures, which will not only give students access to electronic library services but also make delivery of lectures easier and more effective. The College has several collaboration links with other institutions across the globe and it is our intention to actively seek to collaborate with more institutions in the future.

The welfare of students is a matter of priority in the College. Consequently, living conditions in the Halls of Residence along with the general environment around the halls are being constantly addressed. The College is also making efforts to improve sports and games facilities to ensure that every student is given an opportunity to participate in games and sporting activities.

The academic units within the college offer a broad range and variety of academic programmes which are in line with the expectations of the stakeholders and the mission and vision of the university. The programmes offered include: Business Studies, Journalism and communication, Arts, Economics, Anthropology, Gender & African Studies, Law, Environmental Law & Policy Studies, Diplomacy & International Studies, Population Studies & Research, and Development Studies.

All the programmes correspond to international standards. They are evaluated by UNESCO, external examiners, internal assessments. For example, during the last evaluation by UNESCO in 2008, School of Journalism and Mass Communication was ranked amongst the top 12 training institutions in Africa offering communication and media training and the only potential Centre of Excellence in Kenya. The university has a clear educational policy, expressing evidently the principles of choosing the programmes and settling its profile.

SCHOOL OF JOURNALISM INTRODUCTION The history of professional training for journalists in East Africa dates back to the early 1960s when the intention was to Africanize the mass media. Between 1963 and 1968, the International Press Institute ran a series of six-month training programmes in Nairobi for journalists from English-speaking African countries. To continue these programmes, the Ministry of Education approached UNESCO in 1968 to assist in setting up a more intensive training programme integrated into the University of Nairobi. Thus, the School was opened in the University as a UNESCO regional project financed largely by funds from Denmark, Norway, and Austria to cater for students from Eastern and Central Africa. Until 1979, the School offered a two-year undergraduate programme leading to a Diploma in Journalism. This earlier effort was mostly aimed at advanced-level secondary school leavers and journalists with little or no prior professional training. The courses gave practical training as well as relevant theoretical background in subjects such as mass communication, international studies, economics and government. From 1980 to-date the School offers a program leading to Postgraduate Diploma in Mass Communication, a Masters Degree in Communication Studies and from January, 2006, a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Media Studies. The latter program has four specializations namely, Development Communication, Public Relations, Print Journalism and Broadcast Journalism. Its recent addition to the courses bouquet is the Bachelor of Arts in Broadcast Production, which was a logical progression for its long standing collaboration with the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication (KIMC), the oldest training institution for journalism and the technical fields of communication in Kenya. It true to say that the School has produced most of the top journalists, editors and media managers in the Kenyan media, as well as top communication professionals in public relations, international organizations, and the academia. Most of the lecturers

Page 48: College Annual Report draft 1.pdf

46

currently teaching at various universities in Kenya were trained at the School, as are most the public relations practitioners, and publishers. The School is synonymous with the history of excellence in journalism in Kenya and the East African Region. The School is able to sustain this excellence by tapping into the extensive faculty resources of the largest College at the University of Nairobi, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, which holds the record of having the most professors of any college in Kenya. SOJMC students are able to interact with professors from other disciplines offered at the University including sociology, anthropology, development studies, English, linguistics, political science, geography, computer science, and medicine. Currently, the school has more than 1600 students at the undergraduate, masters and PhD levels. The first two graduates of the PhD program graduated in 2011 and were quickly taken up by local universities. The School was identified as one of the twelve Centres of Excellence in Communication and Media training in Africa, and the only one in Kenya

SCHOOL OF LAW

INTRODUCTION The Faculty of Law was established in 1970 and is one of the original faculties of the University of Nairobi. It is currently referred to as the School of Law. The main task of the School is to run a national training Programme for the legal profession, leading to the degree of Bachelor of Laws (LL.B). The Faculty also runs Master of Laws (LL.M) and PhD Programmes for students wishing to specialize in specific branches of law. Although law studies at the University Level are, by tradition, of theoretical character, pedagogical efforts have been made to encourage active participation in class and to introduce mock trails and moot court competitions locally and internationally. The School also runs a Clinical Programme under which students are attached to courts in order for them to appreciate the workings of the law and again practical experience. The training at the School provides students with knowledge of the law required in professional practice, business, industry as well as service in local and central governments. Since its establishment, the School has maintained a distinctive character in contribution to the legal profession and the legal fraternity in Kenya and is the leading source of legal knowledge and skills in the country. Graduates of the School are serving as senior members of government, judges of superior courts, magistrates, senior legal officers in the State Law Office, public corporations, local authorities and private entities. Others are law instructors in many institutions. This premier law School has evolved steadily from its earlier status as a department of the Faculty of Commerce in the 1960s to one of the largest law Schools in East and Central Africa. Today, the School has staff strength of 5 full professors, 9 Associate professors,10 Senior Lecturers, 41Lecturers, 1 Assistant Lecturers and a team of administrative and support staff. The Institute of Diplomacy and International Studies ((IDIS) is a regional training institution based at the University of Nairobi. Its core service areas include undergraduate and postgraduate training, research, publication and conferences, a modern language laboratory, a library and documentation service and hostel facilities for students and visiting scholars and researchers. The Institute offers Diploma, BA, Post Graduate Diploma, MA and PhD programmes in International and Strategic Studies. It has also set up Latin American and South East Asia regional study areas.

The Institute maintains close links with the resident diplomatic community. The location of the Institute allows it to benefit from the large diplomatic presence and international organizations and media personnel in Nairobi.

The Institute has well developed links with institutions that have related programmes. It has well established links with the National Defence College of Kenya and also with the Defence Staff College in Nairobi. counts among its alumni ambassadors, diplomats and international and regional civil servants. We at the Institute like to think of IDIS as the “small Institute with an attitude.” This reaffirms our belief in constantly maintaining the high quality and relevance of our programmes. It also enables us to provide a friendly environment that is sensitive to the needs of our students.

The Institute is constantly seeking to expand its network of collaborators. In 2006 we signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the UN University of Peace and another one with the Spanish Government in 2010.The Institute also maintains an active collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kenya, the Ministry of East African Co-operation of Kenya, the National Defence College, the Defence Staff College, the East African Legislature and Non-Governmental institutions such as the Heinrich Boll Foundation and the International Development and Research Centre (IDRC). I invite you to experience the unique world of diplomacy and international studies as experienced at the Institute of Diplomacy and International Studies.

The Institute trains manpower as one way of attaining the Government‟s strategic objectives towards Vision 2030. This is done by making an assessment of the requirements of various stakeholders. All training is done in line with the Government policy on higher education.

CENTRE FOR ADVANCED STUDIES IN ENVIRONMENTAL LAW AND POLICY (CAESLAP)

INTRODUCTION On 20th September 2007 the Council of the University of Nairobi approved Statute provisions establishing The Centre for Advanced Studies in Environmental Law and Policy (CASELAP) as a Faculty-level unit of the University. This completed a process initiated by the Faculty (now School) of Law and the Institute for Development Studies, both within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, towards a postgraduate centre of excellence for capacity building in environmental governance, comprising environmental law and policy. The action of the Council constituted a formal establishment of CASELAP and thus authorized it to prepare its academic programmes for approval by Senate.

CASELAP has developed focused programmes aimed at providing sustained and advanced level capacity building in environmental governance at national and regional levels. This will fill an urgent gap in environmental law and policy that is key to ensuring sustainable development. The principal components of environmental governance which constitute the three academic divisions of CASELAP are Environmental Policy, Environmental Law and Environmental Diplomacy. Each of the Masters programmes will run for a period of four semesters, while the Doctorate programme in Environmental Policy will run for six semesters. ACADEMIC programmes
