It was Ginny’s desire to stimulate more exhibits at the OMSA Annual Convention directed to orders and medals of the Napoleonic era. THE VIRGINIA S. MEDLEN MEMORIAL AWARD

Richard M. Johnson

On the morning of May 5, 2003, Ginny Medlen walked out of her hotel in Amsterdam where she was attending an international trademark owner’s convention. As she stepped into the sunlight, she mentioned to her friend, "Today is the anniversary of the death of the Emperor." Tragically, only several hours later, a car went out of control, leaped onto the sidewalk and killed Ginny instantly. Jesse, her husband, lost his wife. Elizabeth, her daughter, lost her mother. I lost a dear and valued friend and the Orders and Medals Society of America lost a dedicated Member of the Society. Ginny had also been a Board Member and General Counsel of our Society. This award is dedicated to the memory of Ginny’s love of our hobby, her willingness to share her expert knowledge of the Napoleonic era and its awards, and her noteworthy contributions to the Orders and Medals Society of America.

As you may know, Ginny specialized in Napoleonic era orders and medals, both French and British, with a particular passion for the French Legion of Honor. Additionally, she was a frequent exhibitor at the OMSA Annual Convention. It was Ginny’s desire to stimulate more exhibits at the OMSA Annual Convention directed to orders and medals of the Napoleonic era. To that end, this memorial award is intended to encourage exhibits of Napoleonic medals and to recognize the best of those exhibits.

The Virginia S. Medlen Memorial Award will be presented, beginning in 2005 at the OMSA Annual Convention, for the best Napoleonic exhibit of either French or British material, as determined by the OMSA Awards Committee. Only ten awards will be presented, at which time the Virginia S. Medlen Memorial Award will be retired.

The privately funded award itself is cast in Sterling Silver, weighing approximately 2.7 ounces. It is 2 inches in diameter and 3/16 inch thick. reverse (Figure 3) is a British Order of the Bath cast from an original example in my own collection. The

central "disk" on each side has been left blank. Depending upon whether the award-winning exhibit is directed to French orders and medals or British orders and medals, the central disk of the applicable side will be engraved with the year of bestowal. The award will be presented in an appropriate case.

It is hoped that those members of the Society will exhibit their Napoleonic era medals at the Annual Convention in Ginny’s memory. It is also hoped that each of you will, from time to time, think of Ginny, whisper her name, and smile.
