FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Sebastopol Center for the Arts is a dynamic community arts organization, committed to cultivating creativity and inspiration. For over 30 years, SCA has been a destination for artists and arts enthusiasts. Our award-winning programs provide ways to experience

and explore culture through diverse forms of creative expression.

We are committed to cultivating a vibrant, accessible, and world class art community in all areas of Sonoma County. Our Open Studios programs celebrate the unique creative energy of our local artists, and together we create an inclusive art expression.

Sonoma County Art Trails is celebrating 35 years! Nine of this year's artists have been participating for over 30 years and since its inception, hundreds of artists have participated and thousands of visitors have attended. In 2019, we feature 140 local Sonoma County artists who will engage with you in studios throughout Sonoma County. Each artist has welcomed the opportunity to showcase their work and make direct connections to diverse audiences.

During both weekends, participating artists will welcome the public into their personal work spaces. They'll share their artwork process, and invite conversations, so that you can learn more about how they arrive at their finished work, and what moved/inspired them to create. This is indeed a very special time and something to be treasured.

I welcome you to come out and celebrate ART in Sonoma County. It's a great opportunity to get a "behind-the-scenes" view of how and where an artist works and admission is FREE. I wish you happy journeys and rich inspiration, as you explore the possibilities of ART in beautiful Sonoma County. EXPLORE, ENGAGE, COLLECT!

1985-2019

What is Art Trails?Celebrating its 35th year, Sonoma County Art Trails is an annual county-wide Open Studio program of Sebastopol Center for the Arts. The event is hosted by juried Art Trails artists who exhibit their professional and inspiring visual art in their own studios. No tickets or reservations are required and this wonderful event is free! Art Trails invites, encourages and open-heartedly welcomes the general public of all ages to EXPLORE beautiful Sonoma County, ENGAGE with the artists, their work and processes and COLLECT original, stimulating and enjoyable visual art.

What is Jurying? Each Art Trails artist has been juried into Art Trails. A juried art show means each accepted artist was judged by a panel of unbiased jurors and met the criteria set by the show. Art Trails artists are judged on quality, creativity, coherent individual style, craftsmanship and professionalism. Their work must indicate a consistent technical proficiency with their chosen art medium, demonstrate an understanding of formal elements of art and reflect a coherent individual style while demonstrating the high level of professional presentation expected in a gallery setting. The Art Trails jury members are different each year. Typically there are five professionals from various art fields: three from inside or outside Sonoma County, often art curators, gallery proprietors, or art professors and two experienced Sonoma County Art Trails artists. These jurors are qualified to recognize fine arts in a variety of mediums and styles.

Art Trails HistoryIn 1985, a small group of dedicated Sonoma County artists organized a plan to welcome visitors into their creative workspace on a weekend in October. Affiliated with the California Arts Council at that time, education for the public was a large part of the original plan and each artist included education and/or instruction at

their studios during the tour. These artists developed an unbiased and professional jurying system to ensure each Art Trails artist met the high standards established by Art Trails.

Today, thirty-five years later, Art Trails continues to delight visitors the 2nd and 3rd weekends in October and remains dedicated to enriching its customers' and community's visual art exploration, experience and education. Art Trails artists work throughout the year creating their art as well as volunteering time to create the complementary pictorial Collector's Guide and associated maps, directional signage to studios and participating in the various Art Trails Preview Exhibits. Additionally, many Art Trails artists offer classes or volunteer time to enhance and expand arts education and understanding.

How Art Trails WorksThe free, annual full-color Collector's Guide provides a representative image of each Art Trails artist's work along with studio addresses and contact information. Studios are numbered to make it easy to locate each artist on the maps included in the

Guide. Contact information under each image can be used for future reference as many artists are open year-round by appointment, so saving the Collector's Guide is beneficial. Enjoy browsing and studying your own copy of the Collector's Guide and plan your Art Trails travels! Collector's Guides are available at all the Preview Exhibit locations and shops, cafes and galleries throughout Sonoma County, and online at www.SonomaCountyArtTrails.org.

Preview ExhibitsEvery Art Trails artist has one original piece of artwork on display at the Sebastopol Center for the Arts (SCA) Art Trails Preview Exhibit that runs from mid-September through mid October. The SCA Preview Exhibit is on display at 282 S. High St., Sebastopol 707.829.4794. There are also mini-Preview Exhibits at: Corrick's, 637 Fourth St., Santa Rosa, 707.546.2424; Fulton Crossing, 1200 River Rd., Fulton, 707.536-3305; and Gallery One, 209 Western Ave, Petaluma, 707.778.8277. Why is Art Important? Art is found all around us. Yet, we may not recognize it as art; we simply know that we are comfortable, secure and happy. The design and layout of a building, home, office, or room impacts our emotions, feelings, and thoughts. Similarly a painting, sculpture, etching, fabric and fiber, ceramic, glass, stone, and wood all subliminally register in our emotions, hearts, and brains, influencing our state of mind, sense of calm, happiness and security. It is a well-known fact that simply seeing art not only impacts us but also moves us. Having art in our homes and workplaces is a healthy and natural way of creating a calming and pleasant environment. And what better place than Art Trails to EXPLORE Sonoma County's beautiful scenery? You can ENGAGE with 140 working artists in their own studios and see how their art is created and learn about the artist. Each artist's studio is unique and each will be an experience all its own. Whether you are an artist yourself, an established or aspiring collector or a tourist with a taste for the finer things, there is a piece of art for everyone in Art Trails! You might just find the piece of art that speaks to you that will enhance your home or office. The art that you COLLECT from an Art Trails artist is not only a reminder about your entire Art Trails adventure, it will consistently lift your spirits and emotions like it did when you first saw it. Seeing, learning about and acquiring a piece of original art is healthy and beneficial for the heart, mind and soul. Additionally, art makes a joyful gift for any special occasion be it a birthday, wedding, anniversary, housewarming, Christmas, Hanukkah, or any special event! May you, your family and friends have a memorable time as you EXPLORE, ENGAGE and COLLECT during your Art Trails adventures!

Art Glossary Explore · Engage · C

ollect | October 12–13 & 19–20, 2019

Sonoma County Art Trails open studios was founded in 1985 with a distinct educational mission: to

make the visual arts accessible to residents of—and visitors to—Sonoma County. Since that time, Art Trails has grown to be one of the most respected open studios programs in the country, and a model for other studio tours. Now in its 35th year, Art Trails continues to serve our community, and has once again been voted “Sonoma County’s Best Outdoor Art Event” by readers of the North Bay Bohemian!

The following glossary of art terms may be helpful as you visit the artists’ studios. ASSEMBLAGE: A 3-dimensional relief or

sculpture, constructed by connecting disparate elements into a single artwork.

BISQUE: Clay that has been fired once with no remaining physical or chemically bonded water.

CAST: Mold made from an original object.

COLLAGE: A 2-dimensional composition of found and artist-made images, textures, shapes.

COMPOSITION: Arrangement of design elements such as line, value (light and dark), rhythm, shape, texture that orchestrates or choreographs a satisfying whole.

CONSERVATION: Archival materials that protect artwork from acid and moisture.

GICLÉE PRINT: Fine art digital reproduction. Giclée (zhee-klay), a French word for “spray of ink”.

GLAZE: A glassy coating in ceramics; a chemical patina in sculpture; a semi-transparent wash of color in painting, which is called scumbling when more thickly brushed.

ORGANIC SHAPES: The undulating and irregular forms in nature.

PASTEL: Pure pigment in stick form held together with binders to make “chalk pastel” or “oil pastel” for drawing and painting.

PLEIN AIR: Painting on location, out of doors, for the immediacy of direct observation and experience of nature.

PRINTMAKING: Printmaking is the process of creating original fine artwork by applying ink on a matrix (for example, a copper, zinc or plexiglass plate, woodblock, or stone) and transferring the image onto paper or fabric, using controlled pressure typically achieved by using a printing press. Traditional types of printmaking techniques include Etching, Engraving, Lithography, Monotype, Woodcut and Screenprinting.

SGRAFFITO: Incising through layers of paint or clay.

SLUMPING: Applying heat until glass softens and can be formed.

WARP, WEFT: In weaving, the vertical threads are the warp; the horizontal threads are the weft.
