I was the only person to get off the train at 4pm at Abisko in the Arctic Circle. The train disappeared into the night. I was alone, in the dark, with the temperature at minus 20, as cold as I'd expected it. At that point I thought about giving up this trip and wished I were on my way back home but the train had gone and I could see a hotel ahead.

The girl at reception gave me the key to a 'cabin' as the rest of the hotel was closed. I went back outside. I could see by the light from the hotel and found the cabin easily. My hands were frozen as I turned the key in the lock and pushed the door which refused to move. I pushed it harder. I was thinking of breaking a window to prevent myself from freezing to death when I took my hand off the handle and the door openedfgently towards me.

After recovering in the warmth of the cabin, which was actually very comfortable, I went outside again. I realized I wasn't completely alone as I saw car headlights on the road nearby. It was a clear evening full of red, green and blue light in the frozen air. It was so beautiful I wanted to write a poem about it but I had no paper. The first Starbucks coffee shop opened in 1971 in downtown Seattle, Washington, in the United States. It was a small coffee shop that roasted its own coffee beans. The coffee shop's business did well, and by 1981 there were three more Starbucks stores in Seattle.

Things really began to change for the company in 1981. That year, Howard Schultz met the three men who ran Starbucks. Schultz worked in New York for a company that made kitchen equipment. He noticed that Starbucks ordered a large number of special coffee makers, and he was curious about the company. Schultz went to Seattle to see what

Starbucks did, and he liked what he saw. He wanted to become part of the company. In 1982, the original Starbucks owners hired Schultz as the company's head of marketing.

In 1983, Schultz traveled to Italy. The unique atmosphere of the espresso bars there caught his eyes. To Schultz it seemed that Italians spent their daily lives in three places: home, work, and coffee bars. His experience in Italy gave Schultz a new idea for Starbucks back in Seattle.

Schultz created an atmosphere for Starbucks coffee shops that was comfortable and casual, and customers everywhere seemed to like it. Between 1987 and 1992, Starbucks opened 150 new stores—and that was only the beginning. As a matter of fact, by the year 2000, three new Starbucks stores opened somewhere around the world every day!

Today, Starbucks has thousands of stores, including stores in twenty-six countries. My name's Jade, I’m fifteen and an only child living with my parents in Porchester. I've always got on very well with them and I've always felt happy at home.

Last autumn my cousin Bettina came to live our house. She's nineteen, and very pretty and funny. She's staying with us while she's a student at the university in Porchester. At first, I was very pleased to have another teenager in our house, because most of my friends don't live near me, but recently my feelings have changed. I have lots of homework because I'm studying for school exams, but I have to clean my room and help with the washing-up.

Bettina doesn’t have exams this year so she doesn't have to work so hard. She has more money than me. She earns a bit because my dad helped her get a part-time job, and because it's at the local leisure centre she doesn't pay the full price for tickets to see films there or go bowling with her friends. And although she doesn't pay rent to my parents they don't make her help in the house like I have to. When I mentioned this to my parents they reminded me that we have to be kind to Bettina because her dad hasn't been well for a long time. I agree with that but there is a problem: I know Bettina tells lies to my parents. Last week, she told my dad that she was going to the library but she went to meet her boyfriend. Two days ago she asked my mum to lend her some money. She said she needed to buy some books, but I think she spent it all on CDs.

I asked my parents if they knew what she had done, but they didn't believe me. They said I was jealous of her and refused to listen to me. I'd like to know what I should do now.

Can you imagine a world without words? That main way that we communicate with each other is by using words. We can communicate either by speaking and listening, or by writing and reading. With words we can give and receive information, ideas, orders and instructions.

People have used writing to communicate for about 7,000 years. At first, they used to draw simple pictures to represent objects, such as people and animals. Then people started to put pictures together to represent something more difficult, like a sentence.T

he next step in the development of writing was to use symbols or signs. These symbols represented the sounds of words and not their meanings.

Finally, the alphabet from which modem English comes was invented in about 1500 BC. The people who invented the alphabet used a set of symbols to represent the sounds of a language. A circle represented the sound “O”. This symbol is still used for the same sound today. Many languages are written with letters of an alphabet, including Vietnamese.

Although the British and the Americans have many things in common, including, of course, the English language, they also do many things differently. This is especially true of their eating habits.

Unlike many Asians, who use chopsticks, And Indians, who use their fingers, most Westerners use a knife and fork to eat their food with. In fact, the knife and fork are used by a very small percentage of the world’s population. So, why do Western countries use a knife and fork? One reason may be because there is a lot of meat in the normal Western diet. Of course, it is possible to eat a piece of beef with the fingers, but there is the risk of getting burnt. Also, eating a big piece of meat with chopsticks is, to say the least, difficult.

In Europe, it is traditional to hold the fork in your left hand and the knife in your right hand throughout the meal. In America, however, people only use a knife and fork together at the

beginning of a meal. They first cut up their food into small pieces, using the knife with their right hand. Then they put the knife down, transfer the fork to the right hand and finish the meal using only the fork.

It is not known why Americans do this with their knives and forks. One suggestion is that it is done for practical reasons. The fork, rather than the knife, is the most-used piece of cutlery. Since most people are right-handed, it is sensible to keep the fork in the hand that can use it most efficiently-the right hand.

1. Knives and forks are used by__________A. Asians and Indians to eat with.B. people who have no fingers.C. most people in the world.D. only a small percentage of people.

3. Europeans________A. hold the knife in the right hand and the fork in the left hand.B. dislike using a knife and fork to eat food with.C. change the knife and fork around in the middle of a meal.D. prefer to eat with just a knife, and not a fork.

4. What do Americans do at the beginning of a meal?A. They cut their food up and use a small knife to eat with.B. They use the knife in the left hand and the fork in their right.C. They cut up their food with the fork then eat it with the fork.D. They cut up their food and eat it all with just a fork.

5. Many Americans use just their fork to eat food with because________A. it is easier to use a right-handed fork than a left-handed one.B. they don’t like using their hand to eat with.C. they are scared of cutting themselves with the knife.D. it is easier for right-handed people to eat with a fork in their right hand.

Popular breakfast foods in the United States, as in many other countries around the world include coffee, milk, juice, eggs, and bread. Some other breakfast items served in the United States are thought by many to be traditionally American. However, they actually come from other cultures.

A very popular breakfast food in America is the pancake—a thin, flat cake made out of flour ! and often served with maple syrup. The idea of the pancake is very old. In fact, pancakes were made long ago in ancient China.

Bagels, around thick bread with a hole in the middle, are also popular for breakfast in America. Polish in the late 1600s came up with the idea for the first bagels and this new kind of bread soon took off across Eastern Europe.

In the late 1800s, thousands of Jews1 from Eastern Europe traveled to the United States and brought the recipe for bagels with them. Today, New York bagels are said to be the best in the world. Many people have them with cream cheese for breakfast on the go.

Doughnuts (usually spelled "donut" in the United States) came from France. They were served to American soldiers in France during World War I. After the war, American soldiers asked cooks in the United States to make doughnuts for them. Now, served with coffee, they are a very popular breakfast food across the United States.
