Biography
The second son of the Rev. Fred DeWeerd, Methodist missionary and pastor, James A. DeWeerd
(1916-1972) was a pastor, teacher, college president and evangelist. He was editor of The
Christian Witness and Advocate of Bible Holiness in 1948, served as the President of Kletzing
College from 1949 until 1951 and then as a Wesleyan Methodist pastor in Gaston and then
Fairmont, Indiana, where he also taught high school English. He was married to Mildred Geyer
DeWeerd whose brother Robert was a missionary in Bolivia. He was a longtime pastor-
administrator of Cadle Tabernacle in Indianapolis and a pioneering radio and television preacher
whose sermons were carried on a number of mid-western radio and television stations. In
Indianapolis he also edited The Christian Witness. James DeWeerd was a mentor of James Dean,
and played crucial support roles in Dean’s artistic development.
Scope and Content
The DeWeerd collection contains papers from his administrative positions, church posts,
correspondence, memorabilia, and photographs.
Arrangement
The collection is organized into 6 boxes consisting of 3 series as follows:
