THE SUMMER PROGRAM IN SOCIAL SCIENCE
Coordinator of the program: Didier Fassin
Coordinators of the EHESS session: Nancy L. Green and Denis Cogneau
The École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, Paris, in collaboration with the School of
Social Science at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, and the Swedish Collegium for
Advanced Study, Uppsala, is delighted to host the Summer Program in Social Science for 2016.
This innovative program runs in a three-year cycle, with the first two weeks having taken place
the first year in Princeton, one week this year in Paris (20-24 June 2016), and one week the
third year in Uppsala. It has been designed specifically for junior scholars from Africa, the
Middle East, and Latin America, with the purpose of constituting a genuinely international and
interdisciplinary network of social scientists from regions of the world traditionally not well-
represented in the sponsoring institutions.
Fellows participating in the Summer Program in Social Science each have their own research
project, which they pursue during the period of the program and present at various stages. The
overall ambition of the Summer Program in Social Science is to enrich and expand the realm of
the social sciences through the confrontation of different intellectual traditions and perspectives,
to facilitate and enhance the dialogue between various scientific disciplines and communities,
and to strengthen international networks between the global South and global North.
Professor Didier Fassin, at the Institute for Advanced Study, leads the Summer Program in
Social Science. Professors Nancy L. Green and Denis Cogneau are the corresponding
coordinators at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales. Professors Björn Wittrock
and Ash Amin will be the corresponding coordinator at the Swedish Collegium for Advanced
Study. The program is supported by the Riksbankens Jubileumsfund, the Wolfensohn Family
Foundation, the Labex Tepsis, and the three participating institutions.
