Sharks announce new corporate partner

Bucking the negative trend in what are difficult financial times the Sharks have been able to secure a new major corporate supporter for 2010 with the announcement that international real estate brand Coldwell Banker will become the top-of-back jersey sponsor for the Sharks next season.

The significant announcement is a continuation of the positive moves being made off the field for the Cronulla Sharks of late, with Coldwell Banker Real Estate Australia committing to the 2010 season with an option to continue the partnership through to 2012.Sharks Chairman Damian Irvine was pleased to be able to confirm the new sponsorship arrangement.

“This major signing demonstrates we are in good company for the years ahead,”Mr Irvine said. “From this sponsorship we are confident in consolidating many of our loyal sponsors and vigorously pursuing a membership drive that will give us a great base to work from in 2010.”The announcement with an internationally reputable organisation such as Coldwell Banker Australia confirms the value of the Sharks brand as a corporate entity as the club enters a new era.

In addition to the appointments of Chairman Damian Irvine and CEO Richard Fisk in recent times the club has also brought highly credentialed businesswomen Denise Aldous and Jenny Reynolds onto the board of directors, with the Coldwell Banker sponsorship a further endorsement of the progress being made at the club. During the 2009-2010 Sydney summer this has changed on Sydney Harbour as 18ft Skiffs carrying the colours and logos of the South Sydney Rabbitohs and Cronulla Sharks line up to contest the J.J. Giltinan Championship next month.

In Rugby League, the Giltinan Shield is awarded for supremacy to the club whose team has won most games throughout the premiership rounds of the NRL competition.  In 18ft Skiff Racing, the Giltinan Trophy has been commonly regarded as the 'world' championship since it was first conducted on Sydney Harbour in 1938. While the association between Rugby League football and 18ft Skiff Racing may seem a strange association, there is nothing further from the truth. Mr. James J. Cronulla Sharks Lose First Trial Match

Well, it was only a trial game, but the Cronulla Sharks and Manly Sea Eagles didn’t show any signs of letting up after some big hits, flying heads and shoulders became the order of the night, despite the Sharks going down 18-4.

With a strong southerly blowing and a down pour of rain hitting Toyota Stadium, Sharks fans still turned out in support of the black, white and blue to see their stars in action. Ball control wasn’t helped by the slippery conditions and it wasn’t long before a dropped ball saw Manly break away from inside their own 20m line and almost run the length of the field. It was only young gun Stewart Mills who sprinted almost 100m from the right wing across to the left to make a try-saving tackle.

Unfortunately for the local junior, he was taken off the field by a medi-cab five minutes later after injuring his right knee and will have scans this week to confirm the extent. Young stars Albert Kelly and Nathan Stapleton shared the fullback role throughout the night with both impressing with some thrilling ball running. Jayson Bukuya also made a return to the field after missing out on last season due to a serious leg injury.

“It was good just to get back out there, it’s been a long time. It felt better, felt fitter and I couldn’t wait to put into practice what we have been training for over the pre season over the last 4-5 months,” Bukuya said. “Conditions were tough out there, we really weren’t expecting the rain we had with the heat but you just have to play in what you get I suppose." “I think we defended Manly pretty well. The Cronulla Sharks will take on the flamboyant Wests Tigers in the second trial match on Saturday 27th February at Bluetongue Stadium.

Well, it was a very hot afternoon at Bluetongue Stadium, but that didn't stop fans from all four clubs turning up in support of the NRL double header.

The Sharks took on the Tigers in the 5.15pm game and both sides came out all guns blazing. A number of big hits early on laid the platform for a firey start.

A conetntious decision early on by the referee saw the Sharks denied first points after a Trent Barrett bomb saw former Shark Mitch Brown fail to diffuse it.

With Albert Kelly steaming through, Brown knocked on and Reece Williams pounced on the loose ball, After holding off the Tigers for a solid few sets, the Tigers went over five minutes later, when some quick hands by Tim Moltzen saw Chris Heighington crash over in the left corner. Moltzen’s conversion was successful and the score was at 6-0.

With very hot temperatures, the boys received a well-earned drinks break at the 20 minute mark. Coming back, Robert Lui soon punched a hole through the Sharks defensive line to break away, draw Nathan Stapleton in and pass to Robbie Farah who scampered away to the try line and Moltzen pushed the lead out to twelve points.

The Sharks had their best chance when centre Blake Ferguson made a break down the right edge before offloading to winger Isaac Gordon who couldn't hold onto the awkward pass 20 metres out from the try line.

Farah set up the Tigers third try when a crisp pass from dummy half saw prop Keith Galloway charge through two defenders to score next to the posts. Moltzen converted the try for an 18-0 lead heading into the break.

Although the Sharks scored their second try from a Taulima Tautai offload which sent winger Isaac Gordon over the white chalk, four tries to the Tigers in the second half saw them scoot away with a convincing 36-12 victory.

Hisense Sharks Assistant Coach, Shane Flanagan, has admitted the side's trial form wasn't pretty, but says they'll be ready for the round one blockbuster against the Melbourne Storm.While the team has two trial games under their belt, Flanagan said the games weren't an indication of where the Sharks are currently at."The trials obviously haven't been what we wanted," Flanagan said."One was wet, it rained the whole time and ball handling was untidy, and then against the Wests Tigers, our ball handling was very ordinary too.""We basically defended that whole game and we didn’t even do that well so our form in trials hasn’t been good, but we’ve had that happen to us before and ended up as joint minor premiers in 2008."They aren't always a real guide, we've just got to make sure everything is in place for round one now."

While the departure of Corey Hughes, Terrence Seu Seu and Tony Caine has left the number nine jersey up for grabs, the coaching staff are still undecided as to who will fill to void."The hooker position is still in the air," Flanagan said."At the moment, John Morris will more than likely be given the nod, but Paul Aiton has been very impressive since returning from a knee injury, and both Stuart Flanagan and Lancen Joudo have been very consistent and sharp all off season. It has become a real selection headache really, which is kind of good in a way because we do have a lot of depth there."

The Sharks will kick off their 2010 campaign against the Melbourne Storm at Toyota Stadium on Saturday 13 March at 7.30pm, with this game expecting a monster sell-out crowd after a brilliant off season in Membership and a host of new recruits expected to make their club debut's.

It’s the photo that symbolises Rugby League’s bond with Sydney -- the NRL’s club captains standing together on Sydney Harbour as the countdown continues to the most exciting Telstra Premiership race in memory.

In a show of strength for the game in Sydney, the NRL’s club captains today gathered at Sydney Harbour as part of the NRL’s 2010 Sydney marketing campaign before venturing to ANZ Stadium to be part of one of the biggest ever games of Harvey Norman Backyard League, joining 400 students from schools across the city.

Harvey Norman Backyard League is a modified version of the game that enables children of all sizes, abilities and genders to play together.

Hisense Sharks coach, Ricky Stuart, has named a 17-man side ahead of their round one clash against the Melbourne Storm this Saturday night, March 13 at Toyota Stadium 7.30pm.After a solid pre season in training; Stuart has included a number of Sharks debutants for the match.

After a solid pre season and a good showing in the inaugural All Stars game in February, Anthony Tupou will take his place in the back row alongside Australian representative Paul Gallen and big improver Grant Millington.

"It's been a long off season. Last year was pretty awful and we've forgotten about that now and put that to the back of our minds and we're just focusing on the game against the Storm," Tupou said. "It's a pretty good game for us first up and if we can win hopefully it will give us a good kick start."

"Personally I can't wait. It's hard just training and not having a game on the week and to finally have a game... everyone is really pumped."Asked what he wants to get out of this year his answer was simple.

"We want to win it."

Sailor: Look Out For This Young Shark

Cronulla sensation Blake Ferguson already had a couple of former NRL players in his corner - his uncle Solomon Haumono and second cousin Anthony Mundine.Now the 19-year-old can count on the tutelage of another after wowing Wendell Sailor when they were teammates for the Indigenous All Stars last month.

So impressed was Sailor by the young Shark he has started raving about his new pal on Twitter, encouraging his friends to follow ''the young superstar'' and yesterday tipping him as a NSW Origin bolter.The pair remain in regular contact in the wake of their All Stars connection and Ferguson, named yesterday to play centre in the Sharks' first-round match against Melbourne, is grateful for the advice.

''Dell just told me to back myself,'' Ferguson said. '''Don't be shy,' he said. I'm not a loudmouth off the field; I don't talk it up. On the field, he said to back yourself.''

Sailor's impact on Ferguson has been such that Cronulla coach Ricky Stuart fired off a thank-you text to the 35-year-old after All Stars week.

So regularly was Ferguson with Sailor in camp, Indigenous teammates jokingly asked the veteran, ''Where's your shadow?'' when he was not around.

''I was impressed with him during the week,'' Sailor said. ''He's got game, he's very talented, and the game needs more young guys like him. I didn't even know who he was until last year when he scored a try against me.''

Neither did most people. But Ferguson left an indelible mark in his rookie season, scoring nine tries in 20 games, including that one against Sailor and a brilliant round-the-corner-post effort against Brisbane. His eye-catching performance in the All Stars match has led to further excitement in the Shire and prompted Sailor to predict more representative honours sooner rather than later.

''He could be a bolter this year for Origin,'' he said. ''It's not always good to put pressure on a young kid but he can handle it. He knows he's got game but he's not big-headed about it.''

Ferguson is indeed reserved off the field but at least some of Sailor's noted bravado seems to have already rubbed off. Equal last in 2009, Cronulla are being tipped by many as wooden-spoon candidates again but Ferguson will hear none of it.

He said nothing less than a top-eight berth was acceptable for Stuart's side this year and, personally, wanted to ''hopefully win our first five'' matches. That they open against premiers Melbourne and his first direct rival could be Greg Inglis does not faze him.

Nor does the opening-round encounter worry another of Ferguson's mentors, Sharks captain Trent Barrett. ''It is a good time for us to play them, first up,'' Barrett said. ''If we can beat them or put up a real good showing, the club can get a lot of confidence and maybe gain some momentum early in the year.''

Barrett also singled out Ferguson yesterday, saying: ''Blake showed in the All Stars game he didn't look out of place and he will be better for the experience he gained last season.''

Paul Gallen A Shark For Life

The Hisense Sharks today confirmed that Australian representative, Paul Gallen, has agreed to play out his career with the Club.

Gallen will tomorrow resign his contract, which has been extended to the completion of the 2013 season.

Sharks CEO, Richard Fisk, said Paul’s decision was a massive show of loyalty to the Club, its tradition and the Sutherland Shire.

“I’m aware that Paul was being pursued by three other clubs and it’s extremely pleasing that he has placed the Sharks above the chase of the dollar,” Fisk said.

“This is a positive sign for every junior in the Sutherland Shire that the Sharks have a strong future, and loyalty has its very own special rewards.”

Sharks Chairman, Damian Irvine, was thrilled with Paul’s decision and says the extension is a real indicator of how far the Club has come.

“The Sharks are entering a new watershed period and the contract extension is a clear reflection on the changing direction of the Club,” Irvine said.

“We have a group of talented youngsters here and a player like Paul is an ideal leader to help them develop into future stars.”

The 2010 season shapes as a great one for the Sharks with their opening game against World Club Challenge champions, Melbourne Storm, this Saturday night.

Paul first debuted for the Sharks in 2001 and is about to enter his tenth season. He will now become one of the very few players in rugby league to have played out their career over more than a decade with the one club.

Sharks Barrett ready for Storm

Far from being daunted at taking on the greatest challenge in the NRL on Saturday night, Hisense Sharks captain Trent Barrett insists his team is relishing the opportunity to kick-start its premiership campaign against reigning premier Melbourne.

Barrett says taking on the competition's leading side - and current world club champions - at Toyota Stadium will give the Sharks a solid indication of where they may be headed in 2010."It is a good time for us to play them first up. If we can beat them or put up a real good showing the club can get a lot of confidence and maybe gain some momentum early in the year," the skipper explained."That would be a massive boost for everyone at the club - on and off the field."

The season kick-off can't come around quickly enough for a Cronulla side desperate to consign last year's horror season to history.The knockers are lining up to ridicule talk of a revival in The Shire, but Barrett has warned against writing the black, blue and whites off.

"I think we were all sitting in those dressing sheds last season thinking 'what have we done'? Barrett admitted."It was a hard year - there is no denying that - but a lot of things were out of our control."

"This year we have a new sponsor, new jersey, new players and we have put 2009 behind us.""Although we did it tough last season, we were competitive throughout the season and no one ran over us and that gives you hope."

"We need a bit of luck and after what happened last year hopefully we get a bit of luck and good fortune and keep everybody fit.""We want to create a winning culture here for our young guys to enjoy."
