Principal rooms are embraced by complementary luxury fea-turing a grand foyer with soaring ceilings, custom wainscoting and glistening hardwood fl ooring that sets the stage for distinc-tion. CLOSE TO TOWN IN GREENWICH, CONNECTICUT, a grand allée of mature trees edged a long driveway that culminated in front of a pool house, pool and tennis court. But where was the main house?

It was exactly the lack of such a structure on the nearly 4-acre property, which had been carved from the late Estée Lauder’s estate, that sold the homeowners on the site when they found it.

The recently married couple, high school best friends who reconnected later in life, had been residing in a New England–style farmhouse in Greenwich’s “back country” and had grown tired of the 25-minute ride to town. But after looking at existing houses in their desired location, they found that something was always missing—like his-and-hers bathrooms, says the wife.

The site’s previous owner introduced the couple to architect Douglas VanderHorn of Hilton-VanderHorn Architects, the Greenwich fi rm that had designed the pool house and drawn up plans for a main dwelling

that had yet to be built. The wife, a commercial realtor, and the husband, an entrepreneur who had sold his car air-freshener business to Quaker Oil, liked VanderHorn’s work and asked him to create new plans for a Georgian country house. The couple wanted an elegant and com-fortable home for themselves and the husband’s two children, as well as the newest family member, their bichon frise.

“The property is in the pricey part of Greenwich, so for investment purposes as well as personal preference, they wanted to put a proper home—not a spec house or a builder’s Georgian—on the property,” says VanderHorn. His firm has a reputation for fine historic repro-ductions, one he likes to qualify by adding, “We don’t actually copy a design, but it doesn’t look like it’s done in the year 2000 either.”

The house VanderHorn created has 13,500 square feet of space. That’s large, the wife says says, but not too large. “You don’t visit and say, ‘This must be another living room they don’t use,’” she explains. “To me, it feels like a fabulous Manhattan townhouse. As large as it is, two people could be fine or eight people could be fine. It just works.”

Loyal to the design of the Georgian period, named for the consecutive reigns of England’s four King Georges from 1714 to 1830, the exterior of the brick house has such classical details as a Doric portico, a Palladian window, a slate roof, five chimneys (serving six fireplaces) and a semicircular service wing (including a four-car garage and the husband’s office) topped by a cupola.

Interior rooms flow from hallways built in the shape of a cross. The 21-foot–high entry hall with Doric columns, raised-panel wainscoting and nearly seamless marble floors leads to a winding stairway on the left and an oak-paneled library on the right. In front lies the elegant living room. At the hall’s far end, under a leaded glass fanlight window, the guest suite can be seen.

As for the rooms, VanderHorn notes, “There’s one of everything,” singling out a home theater, a billiards room, the wife’s painting studio, a kitchen and breakfast room with a walk-in butler’s

pantry, a master bedroom suite with his-and-hers dressing rooms and baths, a first-floor guest suite with a private porch and four additional bedroom suites on the second floor.

The wife calls the home’s interior style “formal but comfortable and inviting.” French Louis Xv furniture provides the “formal,” while the “comfortable and inviting” come in overstuffed chairs and couches upholstered in serene earth tones.

The design scheme started with the floors and carpets, with the rest based on that. in the living room, a sultanabad carpet’s burnt orange, deep blue and cream colors are complement-ed by burgundy couches and chairs. And the richly detailed woodwork throughout the home plays a prominent role. “The house is so beautiful,” the wife says, “that if you didn’t put any furniture in it, it would still be beautiful.”

And her favorite room? Her private bath, of course.

The dining room, opposite, features Chi-nese red wall color, silk draperies and an antique Persian rug. The chinoiserie table dates from 1910. In the kitchen, above, a series of antique schoolhouse light fixtures were replated in nickel and hung above granite countertops.

Nestled iN a field of laveNder and wild grasses at the end of a winding garden path is a crumbling stone tower covered in moss, its falling arch topped with vines of blooming wisteria. the scene could easily be mistaken for tuscany or Normandy instead of its amagan-sett, New York, locale—and that’s exactly the idea.

it was on a trip to southern france that Bob and Margo alexander met landscape architect thomas Balsley through mutual friends. they would later hire the prinicipal of thomas Balsley associates in New York City to design the grounds for the new home they were having built in long island.

the husband, a sixtysomething owner of a marketing firm special-izing in the entertainment industry, and his wife, a retired senior ex-ecutive in financial services, make their primary residence in upper Manhattan but have maintained second homes in the east Hampton area since 1973. in 1990, they purchased the 1.5-acre amagansett property after falling in love with its location on a bluff overlooking the bay.

Balsley calls the parcel “an extraordinary site, caught in a wonder-ful dialogue between ocean and field, and [the alexanders] cherish the field as much as the ocean. the property is very much in tune with nature.”

design and construction of the house and the garden proceeded jointly, with the total cost of the entire project coming in at more than $2 million. architect robert Barnes, principal of Barnes Coy architects in Bridgehampton, designed the 3,500-square-foot, five-bedroom home to be the perfect respite for the alexanders along with their two adult sons, who are frequent visitors, and the couple’s Maltese.

the contemporary structure comprises several towers joined at the second level by an enclosed glass platform, which grants views of both the bay and the field. Below the second floor, a terrace leads to the pool deck, creating an easy flow from the interior living area to the outdoor space.

Crafting a pool area that would satisfy safety codes—which require a 4-foot–high enclosure—without obstructing the panorama was a challenge, Balsley admits. the solution: elevate the pool deck and surround it with a low natural stone wall that sits about 18 inches above the terrace but is actually 4 feet above ground level. on the one corner where the ground slopes up to meet the pool, Balsley added a

Working with native plants and trees, landscape architect Thomas Balsley created a Long Island property that is at one with nature.

lily pond, creating a barrier that is both attractive and effective. The deck wall is lined with stone planters that overflow with an ever-changing variety of annuals and

perennials, although this year the Alexanders filled the boxes with lettuces and other edible plants. On the ground side, the wall is edged by masses of lavender, which grow well in the sandy soil. This purple border transitions into ground-hugging junipers and a grassy garden path, which meanders toward the artfully constructed “ruined” tower at the edge of the property.

The vista remains clear beyond that border, with the adjacent 2 acres under a conservation ease-ment and a 5-acre field behind the house that is deeded to the town of East Hampton. The Alexanders worked with the town and with Balsley to integrate these segments into the overall design. In fact, the reclamation of the natural field, although technically not part of the property, was incorporated into the project.

“It was overgrown with more than 2,000 cedars, which we dug out and distributed to the com-munity,” Balsley explains. “We then replanted the field with all of the native grasses, including butterfly grass and bearberry.”

Some of those cedars also went toward helping screen the front of the property from the road, while several old rhododendrons were replanted near the pool tower and in front of the house. These were complemented with even more native plants, such as catmint and American holly, for ornamental effect. The result is a spectacular vista complete with roaming fox, pheasant and herds of deer.

“So often, gardens and landscapes are manicured to perfection, but we wanted this home to be at one with the natural environment,” explains the owner. “We don’t fool with Mother Nature—we just help her along a bit.”

p r E v I E W S / 3 1

The home’s floor-to-ceiling windows, below, offer expansive vistas of the fields and bay. The natural beauty is complemented by a lily pond, left, which serves double duty as a pool enclosure. Trailing away from the house, a garden path, bottom left, winds its way to a wisteria-covered arch.

THINK OF AN ANTIQUE COLLECTOR’S HOME, and you might imagine tiptoeing through sacrosanct rooms. But that’s not what it’s like when you visit the owners of this West-fi eld, New Jersey, home—a married couple with two daughters and a cockapoo. Instead, they wanted their home to be warm, comfortable and lively.

“We’re very casual,” says the wife. “We love to collect antiques, but we also live with them. None of our rooms are off-limits.”

After a renovation of their circa-1929 house doubled its size to 6,000 square feet, the couple needed help with fi nishing touches. Recommendations from friends led them to designer Jennifer Watty of Jennifer Watty Interior Design in Westfi eld. Her task: to inte-grate the couple’s existing furnishings and complement those with new purchases. The $150,000 project was completed in about a year.

“The way I work is to interpret the clients’ style,” Watty explains. “It’s all about them and their homes—I work with their current pieces and bring in resources from all over the world.”

The designer started by adding color to bring balance and continuity to the home. For inspiration, Watty turned to the couple’s collection of antique textiles and rugs. Drawing

The den of this Westfi eld, New Jersey, home is elegant yet comfortable enough to accommodate a family of four. Built-in cabinets display books and mementos, and the entire space is awash in natural light fi ltered through layers of curtains. The basement was re-outfi tted as a wine cellar. Rustic barn boards now hold approximately 3,000 bottles.

on their palette, she selected a handcrafted Venetian plaster finish in three tones of green to create a layered effect in the kitchen. Green also appears in other rooms and is paired with yellow hues, along with accents of blue and red.

Throughout the home, Watty fashioned vignettes that mix antiques and new pieces, layering elements for visual interest. Take the living room, where Chinese textiles from the Ming Dynasty hang above pillows constructed of John Rosselli fabric that is block-printed by hand. The space also includes a handcrafted antique redwood coffee table and a side table recon-structed from a 15th-century Spanish dining table, both by “modern primitivism” furniture designer Tucker Robbins.

The den features built-in cabinetry, a British Khaki desk, a hand-enameled lamp from McGuire and two layers of curtains that filter light. For the final detail, Watty, a lover of greenery, enlisted floral designer Jerry Rose to create a lush plant display. In the entryway, a 16th-century Vene-tian desk and chair from Hartgers Interiors are matched with a hand-blown Venetian glass lamp from Donghia.

The breakfast room features a 19th-century French clock from a town hall; a 19th-century French breakfront and armoire adorn the dining room. Even the basement received extra atten-tion, becoming a wine cellar for the husband’s collection. The racks, stacked with about 3,000 bottles, were made from old barn wood, imparting what the wife calls “a lovely vintage feel.”

After the home’s extensive renovation, it’s those little details waiting to be discovered around every corner that provided the real finishing touch.

“The wonderful thing about this house,” Watty says, “is that the more you stand and look, the more it unfolds around you.”
