Cold formed steel sheet piles
2017
EUROPEAN SHEET PILES S.A.
The Company Europe Sheet Piles Sa is a company specialized in the cold formed steel sheet piles, and actually one of the few in the world of this kind of product. The company is located in Manno (Switzerland) with it has an installed capacity of 30.000 tons per year. Its shareholders started out in 1989 as a production plant for welded steel pipes and sheet piles. As the involvement with sheet piles grew deeper, the company equipped itself with an engineering department, and came into possession of the whole know-how, inherent both in the production plant and in the sheet piles themselves. Cost-effective solutions, and timely product delivery, are two of our main assets. The flexibility of our production process, based on cold forming, enables us to offer our customers a product carefully tailored on their requirements, in terms of thickness and length of the sheet piles.
Applications of cold formed sheet piles • Construction of docks and ports • Waterways • Breakwater • Protection of rivers banks and channels • Protection of construction pits in soil and
water • Bridge embankments • Retaining walls • Foundations • Underground parking
• Underpasses, ramps and tunnels • Slope protection • Environmental protection and rubbish
dumps • Noise barriers • Enclosure of contaminated soils • Civil and industrial sites • Civil defense • Military engineering
Advantages of cold formed sheet piles The main advantage of cold formed sheet piles is the simple and economical production process, compared with hot rolling. The effect is not only a more affordable price but also:
• higher flexibility of production, allowing a just-in-time delivery • customized manufacturing with exactly the dimension (length and thickness) needed • almost no waste of material • cost saving

New generation of cold formed sheet piles
Standard conventional cold formed sheet piles are produced with wall thickness of maximum 9 mm with only weak interlocking connections. The range of application is therefore limited; for heavy civil engineering works in general only hot rolled profiles are used. Our technology enables now the production of a complete new generation of cold formed sheet piles:
• wall thickness up to 13 mm • improved strong interlocking
With these new heavy cold formed profiles Europe Sheet Piles SA penetrates right into the domain of hot rolled sheet piles offering a highly economical alternative. The interlocking mechanism offers strong connection and jam-proof guidance, and can also be made watertight by using bitumen or resin.
Europe Sheet Piles SA provides: • delivery • corner section • sheating and coating • custom-made handling holes • shoring

Combined wall with tubular piles
In this combined wall, the retaining elements, carrying horizontal and vertical loads, are the tubular piles. A triple, factory-welded RU pile transfers horizontal loads to the tubular pile. Connection between the triple pile and the tubular is provided by an interlock, welded lengthwise along the tubular.
The following table details the result of different pile-tubular combinations. The two columns “weight 60%” and “weight 100%” refer respectively to the case where the pile length is 60% (or 100%) of the tubular length,

Combined wall with H beams
In combined walls with H beams, an RU sheet pile is welded onto an H beam, the resulting pile being sometimes called a “king pile”. A triple, factory-welded RU pile transfers horizontal loads to the “king pile”. This combination has the additional advantage of offering protection from corrosion for the beam. The H beam can be welded to the inner face of the pile, as shown above, or to the outer face, as shown in the following page. Here are several possible combinations.

ACCRU/RU Units
This is a unit studied explicitly as a replacement for the “Z-section” hot- or cold-formed sheet piles. Without any increase in weight, this unit reaches higher values of moment of inertia and of elastic section modulus, yet maintaining the typical advantages U-sections enjoy over Z-sections: easy driving, excellent statics properties due to large flange thickness, easy fixing of tie-rods and swiveling attachments, even under water, ease of re-use thanks to the symmetrical form.

Special sections
Europe Sheet Piles Sa supplies a lot of special sections. We can provide corner sheet piles (see picture). RU piles are bent in the middle of the flange, normally at a 90°, but different angles can be provided up on request.
We also deliver widened or narrowed sheet piles to fulfil the working plan.
Sheet piles can be supplied factory-welded, for instance, for the sake of improved water-tigthtedness. Due to the presence of the handling holes close to one end of the piles, two sheet-piles can be welded together in the “S” or “Z” shape.
We’d like to remark that our sheet piles interlocks can join two walls with angles of incidence up to 25°, without any need for bent piles.
Europe Sheet Piles can also offer ad hoc designs. For instance, double welded sheet piles have been occasionally manufactured on demand, to overcome obstacles and to address sideways-verticality problems in long sheet piling applications. In a similar way, cross-over elements can be produced (to join walls made up of different piles, e.g., cold-rolled and hot-rolled pile walls)
Handling holes Unless explicitly requested, our sheet piles are currently being supplied WITHOUT ANY handling hole. Such holes can be obtained on demand. Popular specifications for handling holes are: square shape 40/40 mm, at a distance of 350 mm from the edge.
