Deanie Humphrys-Dunne started her life journey in Easton, CT. Tails Of Sweetbrier by Deanie Humphrys-

Dunne is not just another horse tale. Sweetbrier is real a horseback riding school owned by Deanie’s dad in a

time where the magic of family, friends and the love of horses inspired a young girl with Cerebral Palsy to pursue the dream to jump horses.

Deanie’s father never settled for the limitations that the doctors warned him of when his 3 year old daughter

wasn’t walking, instead he put his fragile young daughter on her own first freckled gray pony named Little Man and gave her the gift of freedom of movement.

With this freedom of movement and the faith her father instilled, Deanie learned that with disability comes

ability and her tenacity would one day make her a champion jumper. Deanie Humphrys-Dunne was a champion

before she met her horse Peach, but together they became a winning team.

I always quote a passage from each book that I review. I choose this one from page 52-53 because Deanie is talking in her own gentle way, telling her young readers about her horse Peach.

“Do you know what she liked to do for fun?

Well, sometimes she grazed in the pastures, or she would go out in the riding ring to run, or to roll around in

the sand. Horses really like rolling in the dirt. They especially like doing it after you worked hard to groom them!

Guess what else Peach really enjoyed?

She liked visiting her favorite friends. Holly’s pony Dark N Fancy was her “boyfriend.” She must have liked

the short, dark and handsome type. He was black, too, but he had white on his legs and an uneven white blaze

on his head. She might have been impressed with his talent too, because he was an excellent jumper with

courage and style. Holly would take him in the same shows as Peach and I entered, but they went in different events. They a cute “couple.”

Sometimes Peach would be out in the riding ring just relaxing, or maybe getting nice and dirty rolling in the

sand. What happened if she saw Dark N Fancy grazing in the pasture?

She jumped the fence so they could play together!”

Tails Of Sweetbrier by Deanie Humphrys-Dunne is not only an amazing story, but it serves as a testimony to

other children and parents of children with disabilities that life is worth living. Deanie’s father gave her the gift

Deanie Humphrys-Dunne is a children’s book author with five books

published at this time: Award-winning autobiography, Tails of

Sweetbrier, Charlie the Horse, Charlene the Star, Charlene the Star and

Hattie’s Heroes and Charlene the Star and Bentley Bulldog.

All of her books offer positive messages for children. Her sister, Holly

Humphrys-Bajaj, beautifully illustrates her books. All books are

available on Kindle.

Tails of Sweetbrier is an inspirational award-winning autobiography

about a little girl whose one desire was to become a champion

equestrian, in spite of her handicap. This book has won the Silver Medal in the Feathered Quill Book

Contest and was a finalist for the Clipp Awards. Tails of Sweetbrier will show children that anything

is possible if you persevere. This book was chosen “Most Inspirational” by the staff of the Pawling

Book Cove in 2009. (first edition)Tails of Sweetbrier is now published in a second edition. The most

recent award for this book is Honorable Mention in the Purple Dragonfly Book Contest in 2015.

Deanie’s other books, Charlie the Horse, and Charlene the Star, and Charlene the Star and Hattie’s

Heroes, are amusing, fictional tales, which contain important life lessons. All of these books are

Deanie is a graduate of the Institute of Children’s Literature. She has been featured on several author

websites. She has been interviewed several times by renowned, award winning author, Claire Power

Murphy on Claire’s program, “Improve Every Year. Her interview with Claire, “Building character

Through Children’s Stories” received top billing. Deanie has just been selected as “Author of the Year”

by author/reviewer, Geri Ahearn in 2013.

She has recently received the following blogging award nominations: Liebster Award (2), Shine On

Award, Sunshine Award, Dragons Loyalty Award, Very Inspiring Blogging Award, the Super Sweet

Deanie is secretary for the Claire Power Murphy Foundation. She enjoys watching equestrian events,

and figure skating competitions, music and singing, spending with her family, and their dog, Elliott.

Interview:

What makes you proud to be a writer from CT? I’m honored to be a children’s author from CT. I love to

write entertaining stories with important life lessons for children. My goal is to be a role model for my readers.

What or who inspired you to become a writer? My parents encouraged me to write stories since I was a little girl. They were the first to teach me the importance of a good work ethic.

When did you begin writing with the intention of becoming published? My first story, Tails of Sweetbrier was published in 2009. It is now an award-winning autobiography.

Did your environment or upbringing play a major role in your writing and did you use it to your

advantage? Yes, I learned at a young age that all things are possible if you persevere.

Do you come up with your title before or after you write the manuscript? Usually afterward, but now and then, the idea for the title comes before I start the story.

Please introduce your genre and why you prefer to write in that genre? I prefer writing for children. I feel

my writing style fits them. I like to introduce humor in my stories. Sometimes the stories are told from the

animals’ point of view. Also, my books highlight good character, which is important, especially for younger readers.

How many published books do you have? I have 5 books published; Tails of Sweetbrier, Charlie the Horse, Charlene the Star, and Charlene the Star and Hattie’s Heroes, Charlene the Star and Bentley Bulldog.

What has been your most rewarding experience with your writing process? So far, probably the most

rewarding thing was winning the Feathered Quill Book Award for my book, Tails of Sweetbrier and having it nominated as a finalist for the CLiPPA award. I’m so honored that it was chosen.

Have you had a negative experience in your writing career? If so please explain how it could have

been avoided? Fortunately, I’ve had very few negative experiences in my writing career.

What one positive piece of advice would you give to other authors? I think each of us should pursue our

dreams, even when you feel they will never be realized. My personal experiences are proof that anything can

happen if you refuse to give up on your dreams.

Who is your favorite author and why? It’s so difficult to choose a favorite author because there are many

gifted, accomplished authors who deserve recognition. I would say two people who are friends of mine, Janice

Spina and Sarah Mazor, are my favorites. Their stories are always entertaining with important lessons to share. I admire their talent a great deal.

Is there anything else that you would like to share with us? As I mentioned, my goal is to be a good role

model for children. I hope that my books highlight important life lessons that readers will find valuable throughout their lives.

What was your show horse’s nickname and how did she get it? My show horse’s nickname was Peach. My

sister Holly stood behind her one day and noticed that my horse had big round muscles that reminded her of a peach. The name stuck and we thought it was perfect for her.

What did you want more than anything when you were little? I wanted to be a champion horseback rider. My dad helped that dream come true, even though many people thought we wouldn’t succeed.

What made Peach special? Peach was pretty, but that wasn’t the most special thing about her. She loved

jumping and she had a beautiful style of jumping. She never got tired of doing it and she knew when she did

well.
