TIE DYE FROM HOME

Tie Dye shirts have long been a summer camp favorite. Not a summer went by during my summer camp days that I didn’t make at least one tie dyed shirt. Here is how to make a tie dye shirt for anyone interested in making one from home.

What you will need: rubber gloves, rubber bands or hair ties, plastic water bottles with nozzles, bucket of water, trash bags or other protective covering for your work space and to store your wet tie-dye item, tie dye kit and the item that you want to tie dye.

TIE DYE FROM HOMEStep 1: Prepare Your Space and Materials. Since tie-dye is messy, you will want to start by laying out trash bags or other protective coverings for your workspace. Next, prep all of your dyes and keep them close for easy access and dampen your fabric with water.

Step 2: Choose Your Desired Pattern. Pinch your item where you want the swirl pattern and twist the item in one direction until the item is in a circular shape. Add rubber bands diagonally to secure - your rubber bands should mimic the look of a sliced pizza. Add different colored dye to each “slice” or alternate using dye on every other slice if only using one color.

Step 3: Allow your item to dry. Place your item(s) in a plastic bag and allow it to dry for 24 hours for maximum color. This will ensure that the dry saturates the item. The shorter it rests in the bag, the less bright the colors will be.

Step 4: Rinse and clean the items. To ensure all excess dye is washed off, rinse the items. Remove rubber bands and rinse the items under cold water until the water runs clear. Wash and dry your item in a regular washer and dryer. Then your item will be ready to be worn!! (From People.com)

MAP PENDANT CRAFT Even though there isn’t much traveling going on this summer, a map pendant can represent somewhere you want to go in the future or somewhere you have already been. Here is what you will need: Empty boxes (cracker boxes work well), a glass or other round object, scissors, pencil, white glue, a hole punch, yarn, maps (you can print a photo from Google Maps), photos of landmarks (from online or a photo you have already), a computer, printer and printer paper.

Step 1: Flatten a cracker box and trace circles into the cardboard, then cut the circles out. Step 2: Think of a place you have been or would like to go. Then use an image either from your phone or online. Resize and print the image. Step 3: Using a piece of cardboard. Cover one side of the circle with glue and lay the picture on top. If you want to, when it is dry, flip it over and put a photo on the other side.

Step 4: Glue a piece of yarn around the outside of the photo and allow it to dry.Step 5: Punch a hole at the top of the circle. Step 6: Cut a length of yarn, fold it and push it through the loop and tie into a necklace. Wear your pendant as a reminder of where you have been or where you want to go. You could even put it hanging off of something! From LittlePassports.com

SPREADING CHEER “Jen wanted to bring some cheer and smiles to some of our neighbors that have been affected during the pandemic. She planned a day to walk on the beach for exercise, but at the same time gather stones.

She and her support person painted inspirational sayings and pictures on the stones and then applied polyurethane to each on. She delivered each stone, riding her trike, to specific neighbors. Jen hid each stone by each neighbor’s front porch for them to find. They don’t know who made them. We hope they find them and it makes them happy.” - Sent in by Carol Dabrowski
