The College of Music offers undergraduate programs leading to the degrees of Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Arts, and gradu- ate programs leading to the degrees of Master of Music, Master of Arts, Doctor of Philosophy, and Doctor of Musical Arts. UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS All degree programs in the College of Music are accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music. All students in Bachelor of Music degree programs in the Col- lege of Music must successfully pass an Upper Division Perfor- mance Examination as a prerequisite for enrollment into applied music at the 300-level. The examination is administered by the faculty of the area of study at the conclusion of the fourth semes- ter of applied music at the 100-level. In addition to meeting the requirements for admission to the university, acceptance into an undergraduate program in the Col- lege of Music requires satisfactory performance on a major instru- ment or in voice as determined by audition. Candidates who wish to major in composition must submit a portfolio for review and approval by the area faculty. Transfer credit in music theory and music performance is vali- dated by examination. Hon ors Study

The Col lege of Mu sic en cour ages hon ors stu dents to de velop dis -tinc tive un der grad u ate pro grams. The Di rec tor of Stu dent Affairsserves as ad vi sor to Hon ors Col lege stu dents, and it is the ad vi -sor’s re spon si bil ity to help the stu dent plan a rig or ous and bal -anced pro gram which will also re flectthe stu dent’s spe cial in ter ests and com pe ten cies.

The college of fers hon ors op por tu ni ties, chiefly through Hon ors Op tions in courses, pri vate les sons, and sem i nars at both in tro -duc tory and ad vanced lev els. These agree ments, through priorar range ment, per mit the stu dent to earn Hon ors credit for spe cial -ized study be yond the usual re quire ments of the course.

Pol icy on Com bin ing Jazz and Clas si cal Ap plied Stud ies

Any com bin ing of jazz and clas si cal pri vate les sons will be de ter -mined on an in di vid ual ba sis by the re spec tive ap plied ar eas. This pol icy will serve to as sure that suf fi cient at ten tion is given to theac qui si tion of the nec es sary rep er toire and skills, es pe cially in the pri mary area. If a stu dent wishes to change from clas si cal to jazzor vice versa, an au di tion will be re quired prior to the fi nal de ci -sion.

The Bach e lor of Mu sic de gree pro gram in com po si tion is de -signed for stu dents who are in ter ested in ob tain ing an in tro duc -tion to the tech nique of com po si tion and for stu dents who arepre par ing for ad vanced study in com po si tion, mu sic the ory, ormu si col ogy.

The Uni ver sity's Tier II writ ing re quire ment for the Com po si tion ma jor is met by com -plet ing Mu sic 381. That course is ref er enced in item 3. b. be low.

JAZZ STUD IES

The Bach e lor of Mu sic in Jazz Stud ies is a pro fes sional de greepro gram. It in cludes the com mon core courses of all other Bach e -lor of Mu sic de gree pro grams and the shared ob jec tives of mu si -cal lit er acy, de vel op ment of au ral skills, un der stand ing of a broadrep er toire, and at tain ment of an a lyt i cal skills. Uniquely, this pro -gram seeks to de velop a high level of com pe tency in jazz per for -mance, and in compositional, scor ing, and ar rang ing skills. It alsostrives to pre pare in di vid u als to un der stand the lit er a ture and his -tor i cal and cul tural con text of jazz.

MU SIC ED U CA TION

The Bach e lor of Mu sic in Mu sic Ed u ca tion pro vides for the com -pre hen sive train ing of mu sic teach ers. It al lows stu dents to de -velop a pro gram of study tai lored to their in ter ests and needs asteach ers. Stu dents are en cour aged to de velop their mu si cian shipthrough en sem bles, pri vate les sons, con duct ing classes, the cre -ative mu si cian ship com po nent, and a wide va ri ety of in stru men taland voice classes. Stu dents de velop their skills as ed u ca tors incourses that be gin in the fresh man year and cul mi nate in a stu -dent teach ing/pro fes sional de vel op ment se mes ter. Grad u ates ofthis pro gram will be able to plan, im ple ment, and as sess mu sic in -struc tion in a va ri ety of in struc tional set tings and for a va ri ety ofstu dent pop u la tions.

The B.M. in Mu sic Ed u ca tion de gree leads to mu sic teachercer tif i ca tion by the State of Mich i gan in grades K-12. To be rec om -mended for cer tif i ca tion, per sons must com plete all course re -

All stu dents who are ad mit ted to mas ter's de gree pro grams in theCol lege of Mu sic must take the graduate ori en ta tion ex am i na tionin mu sic the ory. The re sults of this ex am i na tion are used to placestu dents in mu sic the ory courses. Based on the re sults of this ex -am i na tion, a stu dent may be re quired to com plete two col lat eralcourses in mu sic the ory, Mu sic 200 and 201, in ad di tion to meet -ing the re quire ments for a mas ter's de gree. These courses will not count to ward de gree re quire ments.

All stu dents who are ad mit ted to the Mas ter of Mu sic de greepro gram in mu sic ed u ca tion in the Col lege of Mu sic must alsotake the writ ten mas ter's ori en ta tion ex am i na tion in mu sic ed u ca -tion.

Each stu dent must take the ori en ta tion ex am i na tion in mu sicthe ory, and the ori en ta tion ex am i na tion in mu sic ed u ca tion if re -quired, be fore the first day of classes of the stu dent's first se mes -ter of en roll ment in the pro gram.

Oral fi nal cer ti -fy ing ex am i na tions are given dur ing fall and spring se mes ters,and may be given dur ing a sum mer ses sion with the ap proval ofthe As so ci ate Dean of Grad u ate Stud ies and ev ery mem ber ofthe stu dent's ex am in ing com mit tee.

A mas ter’s stu dent in the Col lege of Mu sic must:1. main tain a cu mu la tive grade–point av er age of at least 3.00.2. not ac cu mu late de ferred grades (iden ti fied by the DF–De -

ferred marker) in more than 8 cred its in courses (ex clud ingcourses num bered 896, 897, 898, 899 or 996, 997, 998,999).

If at the end of a se mes ter a grad u ate stu dent fails to meet oneor both of the re quire ments spec i fied above, the stu dent shall re -ceive a de fi ciency warn ing. If the de fi ciency is not re moved withinone year, the grad u ate stu dent will not be al lowed to con tinue inthe de gree pro gram.

A stu dent may ac cu mu late no more than 6 cred its with a gradebe low 3.0 in courses that are to be counted to ward the de gree.

All de fi cien cies with re gard to ori en ta tion ex am i na tions or en -trance re quire ments, whether stated in terms of cred its, courses,or per for mance stan dards, must be re moved be fore the oral fi nalcer ti fy ing ex am i na tion that is re quired for the mas ter's de gree issched uled.

As many as 9 se mes ter cred its of grad u ate coursework (ex clud ing re search and the sis cred its) may be trans ferredinto a mas ter’s de gree pro gram from other postsecondary ac -cred ited in sti tu tions of com pa ra ble academic qual ity, if they areap pro pri ate to a stu dent’s pro gram and pro vided they were com -pleted within the time lim its ap proved for the earn ing of the de gree de sired at Mich i gan State Uni ver sity. Two of the first three con duct ing ap pear ances must be pre sented within sixcal en dar months of each other. The first three con duct ing ap pear ances will begraded by the ma jor pro fes sor and by at least one other fac ulty mem ber in thestu dent's ma jor area.

The fourth con duct ing ap pear ance must in volve a com plete pro gram. This ap -pear ance will be graded by all of the mem bers of the stu dent's guid ance com mit -tee with the ex cep tion of the As so ci ate Dean of Grad u ate Stud ies.

Ev ery con duct ing ap pear ance must be video recorded in the for mat spec i fiedby the stu dent's ma jor pro fes sor.

With the prior ap proval of the stu dent's ma jor pro fes sor, any of the four re -quired con duct ing ap pear ances may take place off cam pus. In the event that acon duct ing ap pear ance is off cam pus, the ap pear ance will be graded on the ba -sis of the video re cord ing of the ap pear ance.

Ac a demic Stan dards

Doc toral study pre sumes con tin u ing ex cel lence in course work,read ing, and writ ing. A stu dent may ac cu mu late no more than 6cred its with a grade be low 3.0 in courses that are to be counted to -ward the de gree.
