INTRODUCTIONThis is probably the most extensively illustrated book on coins ever pub-lished. The task of compiling the volume proved much greater than anticipatedand as work progressed certain adjustments in the original plan had to bemade. For many reasons gold coinages had to be omitted, and much descrip-tive matter was sacrificed in order to present actual pictures of coins which aremore useful to the average collector. We have endeavoured to present a com-

plete catalogue of the silver, copper and base metal coinages of the 19thCentury, and to illustrate the principal or most interesting types. As withevery first edition of such a work, there are sure to be errors and omissions andit is the hope of the publisher, that with the co-operation of experienced col-lectors throughout the world, future editions may be made more nearly perfect. In many cases it was found illogical to begin the listing of a coinage withthe issues of the year 1801, as such an arrangement would have excluded somecoins which cannot be disassociated from the coins actually struck in the 19th

Century. For this reason the issues of the United States of America startingwith 1793, the coinages of George III of England which predate the 19th Cen-tury, and other coinages actually prior to 1801 have been included. On theother hand, certain coinages of the 19th Century have been excluded due either to their obscure place in average collections or to lack of space in this volume,as in the case of the very extensive German series prior to 1871 and theAustrian issues before 1857. In general, coins of native type, tokens, and cut or counterstamped coins have been omitted.

A geographical arrangement of the contents presents the closely alliedcoinages in their proper sections and avoids the artificial groupings resultingfrom an alphabetical arrangement. A range of dates listed "1870-90" in thetext does not necessarily mean that all dates within this period are known, butrather that the first and last dates have actually been seen. Unless conditionis stated, the values listed are for coins in average fine to very fine condition, suitable for a collection. Uncirculated coins may be worth considerably more. Our thanks are due numismatists all over the world who have helped us

in the production of this catalogue. With the first edition we feel that a starthas been made in filling the long felt need of the general collector of coins, andwe hope in future editions to enlarge and add to the scope of this volume.

Я0This chart of numerals will enable the collector to determine the datesfound on most coins of the world. Many countries using Arabic or Persiannumerals give the year in the Mohammedan Era or Era of the Hegira (A.H. ).This begins on the 16th of July A.D. 622, the day following the flight of Mohammed from Mecca to Medina. The years of the Hegira are lunar yearsof 354 days. The year 1255 A.H. is equivalent to 1839 A.D. The Hegira dateis rectified by taking 3 per cent, of it and subtracting it from 1255, thenadding 622, for example:3% of 1255 = 37.65 (38)1255 — 38 = 1217+ 6221839 A.D.In India several different eras are used. The Samvat of Vikramadityabegins B.C. 57. The Saka Era of Salivanhn begins A.D. 78 and the NepaleseSamvat Era dates from 880 A.D. The respective issues bearing these datesare mentioned as they occur in the text.Three eras may be found on the coins of Siam. The first is the Buddhist

Era (P.S.) Putta Sakarat, which begins B.C. 543 and is not used in the 19thcentury. The Chula Era (CS.) Chula Sakarat, from 638 A.D., e.g. 1238C.S. = 1876 A.D. The Bangkok Era I R.S. I Ratanakosin Sakarat, from1781 A.D., e.g. 109 R.S. = 1890 A.D.Some coins of the Chinese Empire bear the year of issue and are datedaccording to their system of the sexagenary cycle. Chinese dates read fromf-4Q left.
