PrincipleThe screw compressor is generally not equipped with valves and has no mechanical forces that cause unbalance. This means it can work at a high shaft speed and can combine a large flow rate with small exterior dimensions. VFD installed screw compressors speed up and slowdown in response to load. They are the best choice for efficiency when a compressed air load varies throughout the day. Offers a constant air flow at all times and guarantees a uniform pressure throughout. Variable Frequency drive air compressors can reduce the energy consumption by 10–40% compared to modulating compressors.
BackgroundA medium scale foundry unit in Coimbatore has installed with one 100 HP – ELGI make screw compressor. The average liquid metal production is around 350 MT/month. Pre energy study conducted in the existing compressor and it consume around 1500 kWh per day. 75 kW VFD was installed in the existing compressor to
reduce the energy consumption of the compressed air system. Post energy study conducted and found the energy consumption is around 1170 kWh and saving potential of 22% energy savings from the existing one.
Pre energy study reportl Operating pressure : Loading @ 6.5 bar &

Cost benefit analysis
Sl.No. Description Units
1 Type of measure Medium
2 Energy savings per month 7500 kWh
3 Energy saving per annum 90000 kWh
4 Approximate cost savings per year (Rs 7.5/kWh) Rs. 6.75 Lakhs
5 Investment cost 2.6 Lakhs
6 Payback period 5 months
implementation of the measure has resulted:l Air compressor is working under optimum pressure
between 6.8 bar to 7.5 bar
l Average energy savings per day is around 300 kWh
ConclusionBy installing a 75 kW variable frequency drive for the 100hp air compressor, the specific energy consumption for the compressed air system has been reduced up to 7500 kWh/month. Average energy savings is around 90000 kWh per annum.
Co2 reduction per year is
