Where could I be?

This week, I have had the pleasure of extending my learning through my first experience as Acting Headteacher. Part of the challenge for me during this week was to set myself some targets of what I would like to achieve and what I would like to develop in my own skillset, and then balance my time in order to achieve these things. Having to plan ahead, and consider all the available options, has been key to taking a considered approach to the week, as has been developing my understanding more widely of groups and teams across the organisation in order to understand how we collaborate effectively across the school. As I reflect upon the learning experience I have had this week, I will be evaluating my targets and re-working these as necessary to continue moving my own learning forward.

This made me contemplate a link to a recent experience that each family at Honywood will have had the opportunity to be part of over the last few months; a learning review. As our weeks of learning reviews draw to a close, it’s worth considering what the purpose of this process is all about, and to help our youngsters to do this I have written the following to them all:

“Dear Learner,Why do we ask you to set yourself targets? Is it an exercise to fill some criteria for a meeting, or are they there to make a positive difference to your learning?I have been lucky to be part of a number of learning review meetings over the last few months, and as we have looked forward in each of them, I’ve given you a particular mental image to consider:

You are in Cohort 11, it’s August, and all of your exams are over. It’s a Thursday in the last week of August, and at 9am you walk into the Main Hall at Honywood. You go to a table where your Learning Group Leader is standing, with a pile of envelopes. They smile at you, ask you to sign for your envelope, and then you find yourself a space in the hall.

You open the envelope and take out the piece of paper; what thought goes through your head? Is it, ‘If only I had…’, or is it ‘I did everything I could, and I’m proud of what I’ve achieved. I have no regrets’.

Notice throughout this image that I did not ask you to consider what is written on the piece of paper inside the envelope. The point of the visualisation is that it shouldn’t matter what numbers or letters are on there, but if you have tried your best, taken every relevant opportunity available to you and have committed to your learning throughout your time at Honywood, you’ll be content with what is written there.

If your thoughts jumped immediately to ‘If only…’, then consider what the purpose of the targets in your review were, the purpose of every piece of advice you are given, and most importantly, how you want to feel in the August of your results and in life beyond that moment. It doesn’t matter where you are now, every positive step from now onwards will take you towards your aspirations. Remember that our targets are steps to help us achieve our goals.

Mrs Downes.”

School ProductionWe are less than 2 weeks away from our School Production of ‘Fame’. The youngsters involved have been working very hard and are now on their final rehearsal, demonstrating the excellent standard that comes from collaborating with others, from developing confidence through practice, and from being committed to developing and refining their skills to produce a high quality contribution. This is all made even better by having a superb audience, so I do hope you are able to join us on Wednesday 29th or Thursday 30th March at 7pm for what we can promise will be an outstanding evening. Tickets are available from Learner Reception, priced at £6 for adults and £4 for under 16’s; make sure you get them early to avoid disappointment.

Cohort 11 Easter RevisionWe are just 2 weeks away from our Easter break, during which there are a number of revision sessions on offer. Mr Smith will make the programme available to youngsters in Cohort 11 shortly, which will detail the days and times that subject sessions are available during the break. There has been so much positive feedback in the past regarding the revision sessions, so I would take up some of the opportunities on offer.

Lead Learner Update Since the Lead and Deputy Learners have been appointed they have had an incredibly busy time. They have:

1. Created a new learner leadership structure and launched it in an assembly.

2. Designed the Ambassador application and interview process as well as being involved in interviews.

3. Designed and led a session for trainee teachers with a focus on learner voice at Honywood.

4. And finally they are currently in the process of finalising their Development Plans for the year which this week have been shared at the Leadership Team meeting.

Lead and Deputy Learner for AttributesThis term Maddie Orrow and Ellie Cardy have been focusing on the ambassador interviews and creating their development plan. They are particularly keen to carry on the work initiated by our previous Lead and Deputy for Skills Adam Lynes and Shannon Maher. They are working closely with the IT Team and hope to have a MLA website that will appear as an app on youngsters’ iPads by September 2017. They are also in discussions with Ms Barnes for how they can develop the attributes through Quintet Week. Both Beth and Maddie have also been involved in Subject Development Ambassador interviews.

Lead and Deputy Learner for EnvironmentElleanna Jenkins and Daniel Maher are very keen to widen the context of what environment entails and have been putting a proposal in place with Mrs Bash and Mrs Frid to create a community event every half term, such as a café or meeting event for the elderly to catch up with friends. They see the value of developing links with all aspects of our community and are keen to lead on this new initiative. Both Elleanna and Daniel have also been involved in Environment & Community and Events Ambassador interviews.

Lead and Deputy Learner for LeadershipThis term Ben Whitehead and Maddie Dyson have been primarily focusing on developing ideas to increase leadership opportunities in Cohorts 7 to 9. They have started discussing what possible roles could be introduced in Cohort 7 and 8 to improve learner voice. Such ideas include visiting their primary schools to promote the school to year 5 and 6 learners by showcasing their learning. Both Ben and Maddie have also been involved in Subject Lead Ambassador interviews.

Lead and Deputy Learner for ProgressionIsabella Donald and Beth Archer are keen on developing a resource for prospective Year 5 and 6 learners that will support their transition into secondary school. They will look to develop this resource in consultation with Mr Caygill. They were both part of last year’s Creative Team and want to build on the ideas of how revision can be designed more regularly into learning sessions and LS3. Once the Ambassador Cohort Teams are up and running they plan to look at how each of the Cohort Ambassadors can support individual

learners during LS3, similar to how MLCs are organised. Isabella and Beth have also been involved in interviews for the Cohort Ambassadors and the Careers Ambassadors.

Lead and Deputy Learner for WellbeingMolly Pride and Troy Collins have decided their main focus will be to complete the renovation of the private room in Family Learning Team. The purpose of this room is to have a space to speak privately with members of staff or even to hold meetings however, both learners feel a refurbishment to the room will help learners to de-stress. They will work closely with the Family Learning Team and their Ambassadors in order to make sure the room meets everyone’s expectations. Molly and Troy have also been involved in the Support Ambassador interviews.

Lead and Deputy Learner for Virtual WorldJack Whitehead and Holly Plank are keen to research into a wider range of learning apps and encourage more subject teams to use them in sessions. They are looking forward to supporting Mrs Frogley and her newly appointed Social Media and Online Ambassadors in providing material for our own social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook and look to promote safer use of technology in the virtual world that we live in. Both Jack and Holly have recently been involved in the appointment of Social Media and Online Ambassadors.

Cohort 7 Creative TeamMaddie Orrow and Ellie Cardy have been leading the Cohort 7 Creative Team. The team have chosen to focus on a fundraising idea, which is an Easter riddle hunt for Cohort 7 to take part in. The event will take place on Tuesday 28th March during LS3 and has been launched in assembly. Learning Groups will be required to solve riddles which direct them to certain locations around the school. At each location they will discover a letter; the letters will then spell out a place in school where a prize will be waiting. The learning group leaders will have to nominate one learner from their learning group who has been the most curious, collaborative and considered.

Cohort 8/9 &10 Creative TeamCohort 8 Creative Team is led by Elleanna Jenkins and Dan Maher, Cohort 9 Ben Whitehead and Maddie Dyson and Cohort 10 Isabella Donald and Beth Archer. The teams initially met separately but have since decided to merge. The main reason for the merge is that they have all decided to organise an Easter Egg hunt at the Spirit of Honywood Event on Saturday 1st April. They have met with Mrs Lockett and decided to organise two

events, one for primary children and one for secondary children.

Cohort 7 French Theatre Play Honywood Equestrian Teamoff to a flying Start

At Honywood, we offer a diverse range of opportunities for youngsters. In recent years, we have drawn together youngsters with equestrian skills and supported them in the competitive environment, representing the school. Recently, our newly formed team, Ava Coughlan, Chloe Gilfallan, Sophia Gray, Millie Felstead, Molly Mead and Emily Reeve competed in their first competition with outstanding results!

Molly, Ava and Chloe took a team 3rd in the 70cm class with Molly jumping a fast clear round and placing 3rd overall. In the 80cm class they were joined by Millie to finish 2nd as a team with Molly and Millie achieving 3rd and 4th individually. A last minute decision to enter the team for the 90cm class brought a 1st place for Millie Felstead in a clear 19 second round! A fantastic first competition demonstrating extraordinary collaboration and confidence from the girls.

In addition to the Honywood Equestrian team, we are also offering a Wednesday after school and Friday lunchtime club for youngsters interested in horses and horse care. Please contact Mrs Gray if you are interested.

On Friday 10th March, Cohort 7 were given the opportunity to experience some French theatre in the form of a play. The production was performed by Onatti Productions and the play was entitled “Shipwrecked en France”. The story was based around a teenage boy, Tyler, whose journey along a French beach resulted in him being stranded miles away from his hotel! Throughout the hour that the play was performed, the audience helped Tyler to work his way back to his parents who were at L’Hôtel Napoleon by asking questions in French and translating information into English. Several learners volunteered to go up onto the stage and take part in the performance and the confidence that was displayed was exemplary.

The play was performed in a mixture of both English and French and with the help of a vocabulary booklet and watching the actions of the performers, the audience were able to follow the story comfortably.

This was a great opportunity to enhance confidence in understanding the French language and it was a very enjoyable way to learn new vocabulary and practise listening skills!

My Learning Hub Launch

Wednesday 15th March 2017 saw the official opening event for My Learning Hub (MLH) and what a fantastic evening it was! It has been two years since Essex County Council asked the school if we would be interested in building one of their new Autism Support Centres (an easy decision for us!). Since then we have been on a challenging and exciting journey. This week’s event celebrated that journey and gave us a chance to thank all those who have made this building possible. It was a real pleasure to see such a mix of people during the evening, all of whom have contributed to MLH. Once again I would like to thank everyone involved for helping us build such fantastic learning space. I could not keep up with the number of compliments we received that evening!

The event began in spectacular fashion as members of Mrs Houghton’s cohort 9 GCSE dance class performed a piece of their own composition. They were given a brief to create a piece that would reflect the anxieties faced by learners with autism when moving into a mainstream secondary school, and how the support of MLH and their peers would help them overcome their difficulties. The learners’ interpretation was superb and my thanks go out to Georgia Meyer-Hek (9DSc), Lucy Bovington (9DSc), Emily Reeve (9KHo), Abigail Lee (9KHo), Emelia Saunders (9MMe), Olivia Hodgetts (9MWo) and Faye Tate (9MMe) and to Mrs Houghton and Mrs Frogley for their help co-ordinating this composition.

Learners from different Cohorts helped represent the school and MLH during the evening, and I could not have been more proud of the way they conducted themselves and made the visitors feel welcome. There were some very proud parents as well! My thanks to Karta Morley (9KHo), Guy Anderson (8KBr), Finley Kennedy (7PBl), Matthew Cornell (9HBr), Rachel Ball (7DCa), James Ball (10ABu), Marcus Fox (10AMi), Willow Frost (10AMi), Joshua Carter (8KCo), Joshua Turnbull (11SPl), Elliott Harding (9EFo), Oliver Holmes ( 10MWh), Troy Collins (10ABu), Daniel Maher (10DGu), Millie Lane (10CGa), Elleanna Jenkins (10DGu) and Maddie Orrow (10SAr).

Cohort 7 Boys Football result - Maltings 2 - Honywood 3

Finally, the time had come to see what Honywood were made of due to having two previous fixtures cancelled and they didn't disappoint. Conditions were tough and didn't suit Honywood’s intricate style of play as the pitch was undulating and uneven. It was a tough start as the boys hadn't played together before and Maltings took the first chance with a well worked header.

The boys were resilient and piled on the pressure, it soon told as they equalized just before half time as Oakley Jacobs followed up the shot tapping it home. Much of the same came in the second half but Maltings yet again managed to take the lead against the run of play. With not long to go and numerous missed chances we really were wondering if luck was not on our side. Another great run by Oakley Jacobs gave himself another chance and finally one hit the back of the net. The boys continued to run the game and there was only going to be one outcome from there on as the best move of the match was neatly finished by Harry Regan leaving us 3-2 in front when it really mattered.

An excellent overall display with great performances from the likes of Josh Taylor, Harry Regan, Alex Jennings, Alex Larner and Joe Fulford.

On Tuesday 14th March a group of Cohort 8 learners visited Alec Hunter school where they spent the morning in mixed school groups observing the teaching and learning styles.

The intention of the project is to enable C8 and C5 to identify what makes good learning, encouraging them to identify good resources/teaching styles that can be used in their own school.

On 21st June the learners will present their findings to the headteacher of all the schools involved in the project at Alec Hunter. Well done to: Amy Banks, Mathilda Hartmann, Alfie Wells, Brandon Oliver, Fraser McLauchlan, Jack Raine, Madison Campbell, Sam Hazel Young, Charlie Simmonds.
