In 2016, three former Ca-nadian Armed Forces mem-bers brought a class action lawsuit against the Govern-ment of Canada on behalf of current and former CAF, RCMP and federal public servants who experienced discrimination, harassment or loss of employment pursu-ant to various written policies on the grounds they were unsuitable for service or employment because of their sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression. This occurred during a period in the late 1950s through the mid 1990s now referred to as the “LGBT Purge.”

In June 2018, the Federal

‘ LGBT Purge’ Final Settlement Agreement deadline April 25Court approved the Final Settlement Agreement (FSA) that includes all current or former members of the CAF, current or former members of the RCMP and current or former employees of the federal public service who were alive as of October 31, 2016 and who faced threat of sanction, were investigated, were sanctioned, or who were discharged or released from the CAF or RCMP or terminated from the federal public service, or who re-signed, in connection with the LGBT Purge, by reason of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender ex-pression between December

gate, formerly the Military Police quarters), working with local and national part-ners as needed to support individuals. Access includes Veterans Affairs Canada, Soldier On, HOPE, Canadi-an Forces Health Services, Military Family Resource Centres, Joint Personnel Support Units, Integrated Personnel Support Centres, Operational Stress Injury Social Support, Personnel Selection Office staff and more; whether in-house or through the Transition Ser-vices Centres’ reach.

“Transition is more than release,” Cameron said. “These are all things you need to consider when you think about what’s next in

life – and it’s never too ear-ly to start thinking about transition. You should be focused on your career and your mission, but not to the detriment of your family. We are all going to retire, or there are medical circumstances… life happens. Everyone’s situation is unique.”

Thinking of a “Plan B” for a post-military career, a rehabilitation program, buying a retirement home, taking further education, moving from the Regular to the Reserve force, “or maybe you just need to take a knee from operational tempo,” Cameron said. “We all will walk through the same door, regardless of rank or condi-tion. We’ll all use the same organization to move onto whatever might be.”

Ill and injured person-nel will continue to be the Transition Group’s priority, but Cameron said the mil-itary has an obligation to its people and Canada to “help members and families, and return good citizens” to civilian life after a career in service.

“We have a population we should, could and will help. We are building a capability and we know it will be a few years before we get a fully operational model but, in the meantime, we are in ‘Op Transition,’ too. This is a named CAF operation, a formalized, institutional process we will continue to use to build the program and bring real effect to members and their families – right now.”

March 4, just after 2 p.m., a 14 Wing Greenwood-based aircraft, Rescue 343, 413 (Transport and Rescue) Squadron; was tasked by the Halifax Joint Rescue Coordination Centre for an ELT search near Wabush. R343 tracked the ELT to an aircraft resting on the ground near a cabin. The plane was

tied down, not in distress and with no sign of people. R343 stood down, landed in Greenwood around 10:30 p.m.

March 8, just after 9 a.m., a Cormorant helicopter was tasked to assist with a sit-uation that has an S92 ex-periencing gear box issues in-fl ight while returning from

the Thebaud oil platform. The aircraft of concern was ap-proximately 30 minutes back from landing in Halifax. Just after 10 a.m., the Cormorant was released, as the S92 had landed in Halifax safely.

March 23, a Hercules from Greenwood was tasked just after 6 a.m. to locate two cross-country skiers

Crews respond to SAR searches, coverage requests(a 61-year-old male and a 60-year-old female) as their personal SOS beacon had been activated approximately three hours earlier south of Qikiqtarjuaq (north-north-east of Pangnirtung). The aircraft was asked to locate the pair and drop a mes-sage bundle to ascertain if an emergency existed. The

aircraft was airborne by 8:30 a.m. In the meantime, a ground search and rescue party reached the skiers around 2:30 p.m. They found no injuries and extracted them to Qikiqtarjuaq. The Hercules made a fuel stop in Kuujjuaq, Quebec, and landed home in Greenwood around 8:30 p.m.

March 25, a Cormorant launched from 14 Wing just before 5 a.m. for a man stuck on an ice flow near Charlottetown. Local fire and police services had also been called; the Cormorant was stood down almost immediately and returned to Greenwoo d just after 5 a.m.

DWD - SERGEANT R. LINDSAY

April 9, the Royal Canadian Legion Ortona Branch 69 Berwick hosts a dedication service for the community’s new war memorial, placed at the Berwick & District School on Veterans’ Drive. The ser-vice is open to the public.

A parade starting from the Berwick Town Hall, 236 Com-mercial Street, to the school will start at 10:15 a.m. Mem-bers from 14 Wing Green-wood, Legion members, vet-erans, RCMP, Cadets, Scouts and Girl Guides will be joined in the parade by students and teachers from the school. The dedication ceremony will take place in the school gymnasi-um at 11 a.m. His Honour, The Honourable Arthur J. LeBlanc, Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia, and her Honour Mrs. Patsy LeBlanc will be attend-ing. LeBlanc is the Honorary Patron of the Royal Canadian Legion Nova Scotia/ Nunavut Command.

Since 2015, the Berwick and District School has been the site for the Berwick Le-gion’s Remembrance Day

services. The monument was erected a few days before November 11, 2018, the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War, and is now ready for its dedication. Since 2003, April 9 has been desig-nated Vimy Ridge Day.

A direct walkway to the monument is used daily by school students, and may be accessed from the from the Kings Mutual Century Centre parking lot across the street. Four new flag poles fly the fl ags of Canada, Nova Scotia, the Town of Berwick and the

County of Kings, and enhance the visibility of the site. The monument site is a unique way to teach our communi-ty’s students about Canada’s military service since Con-federation, instill a sense of appreciation for history and remind all of the sacrifices that have been - and continue to be made.

The monument’s streetview centre panel features a pic-ture and quote of a Second World War recruiting poster, depicting a statue holding a torch at the top of the Vimy,

France monument. The quote is from the poem, “In Flanders Fields:” “The torch be yours to hold it high, if ye break faith with us who die, we shall not sleep though poppies grow in Flanders Field.” The school view centre panel lists the names of the 154 servicemen from Western Kings County who died in the First and Second world wars and the Korean Confl ict, and the Act of Remembrance. On one side is a picture of the statue at Vimy, France of a woman weeping, called “Mother Can-ada” or “Canada Bereft;”on the other side is a picture of a First World War soldier standing on sentry duty. The monument is in both English and French.

The monument was fi-nanced by Veterans Affairs Canada, the Nova Scotia De-partment of Communities, Culture and Heritage and the Municipality of the County of Kings. In-kind support came from the Town of Berwick and the Annapolis Valley Regional Centre for Education.

This is an opportunity for us in the community, either as individuals or as organizations, to show our appreciation to Penny and the Subway team for how much their support and dedication has meant to us. If you like good food, live entertainment and drinks and would like to help us celebrate the retirement of one of the most ardent sup-porters of everything that matters or happens in our community, then this event is a “must attend” for you.

Community will mark ‘Subway Lady’ Lorrie’s retirement April 16

The Canadian Armed Forc-es Atlantic Regional Pow-erlifting Competition will be hosted April 1 to 3 at 5 th Canad ian D iv is ion Support Base Gagetown Detachment Aldershot.

Forty-two years of service was highlighted February 18, as Major Ken Kohler prepared for offi cial retire-ment, effective February 21. He was celebrated at 14 Wing Greenwood during an informal headquarters gath-ering, something he’d rather have downplayed, but “we couldn’t let you go without saying goodbye,” said Dep-uty Wing Commander Lieu-tenant-Colonel Bruno Baker.

“That’s 42 years of dis-tinguished service. There are ceremonies for this, and they could be anything, but we wanted to show you our appreciation: it’s the right thing to do.”

Kohler was presented the Third Clasp of the Canadian Forces Decoration earlier in February: he joined the Royal Canadian Armed Forces in 1976, attended Royal Military

College and was fi rst posted to Shearwater. Throughout his career, he had multiple postings to Greenwood, end-ing his career as the informa-tion management offi cer.

“What a tough job,” Baker acknowledged. “I have a new appreciation for it in the work I now do. It’s a tough world, full of rules, with a lot of people doing different things. Ken’s done a tremendous job and put Greenwood in the lead of information man-agement within the RCAF. So it’s with sadness – and great pleasure at the same time – that we wish you all the enjoyment to come in the next stage of your life.”

Kohler was presented with an array of certifi cates and letters, including a certifi-cate of service from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, thanking him for “your career of service to our country.” Nova Scotia Premier Stephen McNeil recognized Kohler’s

“outstanding service and commitment to country and professional service.” 14 Air Maintenance Squad-ron Lieutenant-Colonel Amy Tsai-Lamoureux thanked Kohler for his earlier career

service with flight crews, and the legacy he left there for “generations of airmen.” He also received congratula-tions from the Municipality of the County of Kings, the director general of the Air

Reserve and Baker.Lieutenant-Colonel Joel

Ingimundarson, the A6 Di-rector at 1 Canadian Air Division, sent special ac-knowledgement of Kohler’s “tremendous” efforts in the

IM world.Kohler said his most re-

cent seven-plus years in IM truly brought home to him the value of the 14 Wing motto, “Operate as One.”

“From my perspective, no one person does anything: it’s the people through-out your career who stand around you, support you and help make Greenwood something special.”

He thanked his co-workers in the 14 Wing IM offi ce for their help in “an uphill battle – challenging is more than I have words to say.”

He became more emo-tional when thanking his wife, Lois.

“Over the years – does this take a toll on your fam-ily? There is not one of you here without any service that doesn’t understand that. Some things are more memorable than others, and the good fortune is you got through those.”

Service recognized as long-time member retires

Deputy Wing Commander Lieutenant-Colonel Bruno Baker, left, Lois Baird, Major Ken Kohler and Chief Warrant Officer Dan Flamand, as Kohler was recognized at a depart with dignity gathering February 18 at 14 Wing Greenwood. Kohler retired after 42-plus years of service within the Royal Canadian Air Force. S.White
