DePaul is Considering Closing Kenmore Avenue
DePaul University is considering the closing of Kenmore between Fullerton
and Belden to create a continuous campus. There will be a loss of
approximately 48 parking spaces on Kenmore and traffic most likely would be redirected to Sheffield or Clifton.
If you have an opinion on the proposed Kenmore closing, please email WNA
Board member Allan Mellis at [email protected] with your
comments.
Bike Walk Lincoln Park is a new neighborhood committee in the 43rd ward
working to make bicycling and walking safer and more pleasant. The group is co-chaired
by Lincoln Park residents Michelle Stenzel and Michael Reynolds. They say that they
believe the 43rd ward is already a good place to walk and bike, but there's room for
improvement, and they want to “bring it up from a solid B to an A plus.”
They’re working with Alderman Michele Smith to bring about positive changes. Areas
that have been identified for future work include:
-evaluation of the Lincoln/Fullerton/Halsted intersection for improvements for
pedestrians and bicyclists;
-making the southernmost section of Clark Street more livable with safer crosswalks
and the addition of bike lanes;
-increasing the number of bicycle racks in areas of highest need;
-engaging community members to participate in walking and biking audits of every
street in the ward to identify problem areas.
They invite visitors to their website at bikewalklincolnpark.com to read about issues of
interest to 43rd ward pedestrians and bicyclists. They hope to increase membership and
gain members from each corner of the ward. The group will be meeting in person periodi-
cally, and welcome anyone interested in supporting the effort to contact them to be added
to the Google Group by e-mailing them at [email protected]
Halloween Party at Supera Park A Halloween party is planned for Saturday October 29th, from 10am - noon.
Elmo will make an appearance ! We’d love to make it a more festive event with goodie bags for the kids and maybe some
activities, but we need your help. Please volunteer an hour of your time for a planning
meeting and be willing to help a little before or during the event.
Please contact Parks Chair Scott Deichman at [email protected].
Lincoln Park Neighborhood Parking Program
Depaul University provides a limited number of permits for on-campus parking to members of the
DePaul Neighborhood Parking Program. For the 2011/12 academic year, it is free of charge.
Residents are eligible for the program who live within these boundaries: Altgeld (north) -
Armitage (south) - Halsted (east) - Wayne (west). Proof of area residency is required at the time of registration. Participation is limited to one permit
per household. Parking permits are valid for the academic year, September 1 - August 31.
Please note that the program is limited to 300 participants.
A special DePaul "Area Resident" parking hang tag is required to park in all DePaul facilities. A
DePaul access card is required for entrance to the Clifton parking garage. Please note that a parking
permit does not guarantee an available space in the parking facilities.
Available parking times for neighbors:
- Student Surface Lots L and P, Monday - Friday: 4:00 pm to 8:00 am Weekends: Available all day
- Clifton Garage, Monday - Friday: 4:00 pm to 8:00 am Weekends: Available all day
Area Resident parking permits are available at the DePaul University Parking Services Office,
2320 N. Kenmore Room 177, open Monday - Friday 8:30 pm to 4:30 pm
* If you already have an access card please bring it with you when you register or include the card
number and your e-mail address on the application, so that we can program the card to give access
for the new academic year.
For more information, call (773) 325-7275.
NOTE: Parking permit applications can also be mailed to the Parking Services Office at: DePaul
Parking Services Office 2320 N. Kenmore, Room 177 Chicago, IL 60614

license, state of Illinois ID, etc.), or a photocopy of one ID and one proof of residency such as a util-
ity bill with your current address.
Seniors: Make sure to re-apply for property tax exemption From a Sun Times article by Lisa Donovan
A new state law kicked in this year requiring Illinois residents over 65 to apply for their sen-ior exemptions annually. But Cook County Assessor Joe Berrios says he is concerned that 18 percent of 300,000 county residents eligible for the exemption in each of the last three years have yet to reapply this year — even after his office mailed out reminders. Also, the “senior freeze” exemption, which gives senior homeowners a break if their income is below $55,000, requires an annual application.
Seniors who don’t reapply for the exemption could be hit with a double-whammy: Since their senior and homeowner exemptions were once tied together, they’ll be losing out on both. If you don’t respond, the state assumes you no longer live there
With second installment property tax bills expected to be higher this year when they are sent out next week, “every taxpayer in Cook County should check that tax bill before they pay it,” Berrios told reporters at a news conference.
While property values have fallen, they’re only part of the equation in figuring out tax bills. Taxing districts, from libraries to schools, still have bills to pay. And the Chicago Board of Education is asking for $2.118 billion, up from $2.001 billion the previous year, which is expected to drive up some tax bills in the city.
For more information about qualifying for exemptions, go to cookcountyassessor.com or
call (312) 443-7550.

WNA Schools Report
Agassiz Elementary: Admissions - Kindergarten through 8th grade
If you reside within Agassiz’s attendance boundaries and your child is in grades Kinder-
garten or above, you can enroll your child by coming to the school’s front office. If you do
not live within the school’s attendance boundaries and your child is in grades Kindergarten
or above, you must complete the standard application and participate in the CPS lottery to
gain admission to the school. (Note that the school code for Agassiz is 2030AG.) Lottery
applications for fall admission are generally due in December of the previous year. Agassiz
will provide a School Tour on October 4th from 9:30 am - 10:30 am.
Oscar Mayer: Oscar Mayer Magnet is a Neighborhood Magnet School. Any child living
within the attendance area that is 5 years old will be admitted to the school. The school is
hosting school tours on each of the following dates: October 13, November 30, December
22. All tours begin at 10 am. You do not need to register. Enter at the Main Entrance on
Clifton. Please, adults only. Contact the Main Office at (773) 534-5535 to confirm and for
additional information.
Students who live within the neighborhood attendance boundaries have automatic right of
admittance into the school. However, students from the attendance area who are interested
in the International Baccalaureate Magnet Program or the Performing Arts Magnet Pro-
gram must submit an application to that program. Qualified attendance area students will
be scheduled for Double Honors/Advanced Placement classes. After enrollment, any stu-
dent is eligible to elect vocal or instrumental music as a class.
Alcott High School: Alcott High School for the Humanities, a Chicago Public Schools
(CPS) performance high school, is open to all students throughout the city of Chicago.
Students can apply one of three ways for admissions listed below. The lottery begins with
an application process in October and a postmark deadline in December 2011. The official
lottery occurs in late January or early February. For more information, contact AHSH Ad-
missions Office at 773.534.5976.
- Students currently enrolled in the eighth grade at Alcott Elementary School are eligible to
attend AHSH. An application will still need to be submitted for acceptance.
- A neighborhood lottery is held each year. The neighborhood boundaries are from North
Avenue on the south to Belmont Avenue on the north and Lake Michigan to the east and
Western Avenue on the west. Eighth graders residing in those boundaries may apply to the
neighborhood lottery.
- Eighth graders living in the City of Chicago may apply to the citywide lottery. Again, the
lottery begins with an application process.
Lincoln Park High School: FRESHMEN ADMISSIONS for September 2012 - Lincoln
Park is both a neighborhood high school with attendance boundaries and also a school with
magnet programs (International Baccalaureate Program, Double Honors/Advanced Place-
ment Program, Performing Arts Program). The magnet programs admit students from out-
side the neighborhood attendance area. Approximately three-fourths of the 2300 students
enrolled in the school entered through one of the three magnet programs. Last year Lincoln
Park received 5161 applications to the Magnet Programs. NOTE: Lincoln Park has its own
application forms for the Performing Arts Magnet Program and the Double Honors/
Advanced Placement Magnet Program. LPHS applications will be available after
October 3, 2011.
