Built in the Basins

The Mississippi River Watershed covers all or part of 2 Canadian provinces and 31 states. More than half the goods and services consumed by U.S. citizens are produced with water that flows through this great watershed.

SECOND FOUNDATION – BASINS   WATERSHED MAP The second thing they decided was that this report card would be built in the basins Scale of watershed = huge This is important to recognize – the scale of the basin will include a wide variety of data. Our goal was to find the best summary data at a large scale. Living document Trends

FOUR – BREADTH The third thing - The report card needed to be built and developed with strong input from a broad range of experts and stakeholders knowledgeable of the issues AND where to find the data in each basin.   This would not a project developed in isolation with only a few people.

A work in progress

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Process built – layered Each workshop in each basin was different but informed by what we had learned before Water rich north and east transitioned to water stressed south and west     Final point There’s always another phone call or email that we can make. There’s always someone critical who can’t make it to the workshops that we want to connect with There’s always another referral and a follow up after the workshops     BUT the breadth of participation has been heartening   we did the first workshop in the UMR which is my home.   Unlikely colleagues   We heard repeatedly at the workshops that these were unique – bringing people together who all shared a connection and dependence on the waters but who often did not work together or know about the goals or concerns from other interests or sectors.   It’s been an open and honest attempt to bring people together
