    Shavuot

aeli Children celebrate Shavout at Kibutz Geva

Jewish people in India, Israel and around the world, celebrated

recently the festival of Shavu'ot, an important day in the Jewish

calendar, with both historical and agricultural significance.

Agriculturally, it commemorates the time when the first fruits

were harvested and brought to the Jewish Temple in Jerusa

Historically, it celebrates the giving of the Torah the

Books of Moses Judaism' s founding legal and et

religious text, at Mount Sinai over three thousand years ago.

It is a tradition for Jews to eat dairy dishes during Shavu'ot. On

the holiday table of many Jewish homes one may find

mouthwatering dairy dishes such as blintzes, quiches and

cheesecake. Some say this tradition is a reminder of the

promise regarding the land of Israel, a land flowing with "

    and honey."

If you happen to be visiting a kibbutz, an Israeli communal

agricultural settlement, it is worth attending the annual Bikkurim

ceremony. The agricultural settlements, and mainly the

kibbutzim, hold beautiful ceremonies and parades on Shavuot,

displaying the produce grown on their land. In most kibbutzim

these ceremonies are open to the public.
