Regional Manager for the American Wood Council (AWC).

The American Wood Council (AWC) is the voice of North American wood products manufacturing,

representing over 75 percent of an industry that provides approximately 400,000 men and women in

the United States with family-wage jobs. AWC members make products that are essential to everyday

life from a renewable resource that absorbs and sequesters carbon.

I am the Central Regional Manager of AWC and assist in developing state-of-the-art engineering data,

technology, and standards for wood products to assure their safe and efficient design, as well as

provide information on wood design, green building, and environmental regulations. AWC also

advocates for balanced government policies that affect wood products.

Structural / Building Code plan reviewer and Business Development Manager with Colorado

Code Consulting, LLC. Colorado Code Consulting, LLC, is well qualified in the area of building

department administration, building inspections and plan review services. Staff has a combined

experience of over 100 years. Review process works to keep the project moving forward while

ensuring compliance with all applicable codes. Reviewed all aspects of projects for conformance with

the building, mechanical, plumbing, structural, energy and electrical codes as adopted by the

jurisdiction. Developed plan review reports outlining the necessary changes to bring the construction

documents into compliance with the applicable codes. Once construction documents have been found

to comply with the codes, submitted the permit application for processing, which allowed a building

permit to be issued. During the construction of the project, continued to review plan revisions

and deferred submittals; 'fire sprinklers, fire alarm drawings and through-penetration fire stopping,' etc.

February 2009 – November 2012

Director of Codes and Standards, Building Owners and Managers Association. I represented

BOMA International within national codes and standards development organizations as well as before

the U.S. DOE, EPA, OSHA, and other federal regulatory agencies on specific construction, codes &

standards issues. I worked with other model codes and standards setting organizations such as

ASHRAE, IWCA, ASTM, ANSI and ASME to ensure that any codes and standards being created or

modified meet BOMA’s criteria of being reasonable, achievable, and cost-effective. I serve as the staff

liaison for the Standard Method of Floor Measurement Committee, Codes and Standards Committee

and various additional work groups, which develop BOMA’s series of floor measurement standards. I

am also responsible for coordination of the BOMA standards interpreter’s program.

November 2008 – 2011

Construction Expert with MaxFour Engineering and Design Building Company. MaxFour is an

Architectural, Engineering, consulting and building-build contracting company in Denver Colorado.

MaxFour specializes in design build, geotechnical civil, structural, and environmental engineering,

plus associated construction and architectural services. MaxFour combines the capabilities of a large

multidisciplinary corporation with the efficiency and personal attention of a small firm. With our open

communication, teamwork, and skilled management we resolve issues before they become problems.

MaxFour’s experts all have significant experience working within large firms as well as with the

government. My position with MaxFour is a construction expert with the responsibility to evaluate

and analyze construction practices to verify code conformance as well as monitoring quality control

procedures mostly on military projects.

February 1990 to 2009:

Regional Manager for the American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA), American Wood

Council (AWC).

Represented the Association in the states of Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, New Mexico,

Nevada, Illinois, Kansas, Iowa and Utah. Represented the AF&PA membership in matters dealing

with the regulation of the use of wood products. I was primarily responsible for representing the

lumber industry in activities of the International Code Council (publishers of the International Building

AWC is the wood products division of the American Forest & Paper Association. AWC's mission is to

increase the use of wood by assuring the broad regulatory acceptance of wood products, developing

design tools and guidelines for wood construction, and influencing the development of public policies

affecting the use of wood products.

Over the course of participating in the code change process for over 30 years, I have worked closely

with building officials, architects, engineers, fire professionals, contractors and others to work together

to make the building codes a better and more friendly document. In my code related activity I have

been responsible for assisting in the rewriting of Chapter 23 (Wood) in the 2000 edition of the

International Building Code, and Chapter 33 (Exiting) in the 1997 Uniform Building Code as well as

other provisions in the codes which remain today.

December 1980 to February 1990 - Full time. Part Time as needed since April 1990 to 2009:

Principal and Code Consultant with Tyree Associates, Inc., Colorado Springs, Colorado. Tyree

Associates is a consulting engineering firm which specializes in building/fire codes and standards.

Principal services are to communities, supplying complete building department administration and

inspection services to some communities and to supplement smaller or impacted building departments

in others. Tyree Associates also consults with architects, engineers, designers, contractors and others

who seek assistance in working with the codes and standards in project development. Tyree

Associates also was called in to provide expert witness testimony in building code related legal

matters.

May 1978 to December 1980:

Code Engineer with the Building Department Inc., Denver, Colorado. Company provided plan

checking and code conformance inspections to jurisdictions that did not have full-time building

department staffs. Served as head of structural plan review division as well as Building Official for

the Towns of Frisco, Dillon and Avon, Colorado. Supervisor of field inspections for Glendale,

Colorado.

May 1976 to May 1978:

Plans Examiner/Structural Inspector with the City of Loveland, Colorado. Reviewed

residential and commercial plans for conformance with the various codes. Worked actively

with the architects, engineers, developers and builders in problem resolution of plans. Issued

permits and performed normal building department related functions. Made regular structural

and special inspections. Served as secretariat to handicapped advisory committee to local city

government.

released publication in July 2007.

Assisted the members of the Structural Engineers Association of California (SEAOC) Building Code

Committee in the reformatting of Chapter 23, which went through the code change process in 1995-96

and was published in the 1997 edition of the Uniform Building Code.

Prior to being appointed to the ICC Structural Committee, I worked very closely with the International

Code Council’s Structural Committee in the writing and preparation of the new structural provisions

for inclusion into the 2000 International Building Code, including writing the very first draft of

Chapter 23.

Prepared the final draft of Chapter 23, which was forwarded to staff and then to the ICC for

publication in the 2000 International Building Code “Draft” document.

Member of the National Council of Structural Engineers Association Building Code Committee from

2000-2008.

Active participant in the ICBO and ICC code change processes since 1977. In fact, I have been a

participant in every ICBO or ICC Annual Business meeting and code change hearing since 1977.

National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS), Building Seismic Safety Council Board of

Directors:

National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS), Building Seismic Safety Council Board of Directors

from 1992-1999. The Building Seismic Safety Council (BSSC) developed the National Earthquake

Hazard Reduction Program (NEHRP) “Provisions”. The “Provisions” contain the most up to date

state-of-the-art seismic design provisions, which are tested in real life designs and then included in the

International Building Code. Was Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors in 1998-1999. I was

recently appointed to the BSSC Board for another term 4-year term in 2008.

National Fire Protection Association

From 2001-2008, served on three National Fire Protection Association Technical Committee’s,

Structures and Construction, Materials and Fire Protection Features.

May 2004 - Appointed to National Fire Protection Association Urban Wildland Interface Committee.

Colorado Chapter International Conference of Building Officials:

President of Colorado Chapter ICC in 1983. Served on many committees within the Chapter including

the Code Changes Committee, the Education Committee, the Corporate Affairs Committee, and the

Colorado Society of Architect’s Committee.

Instructor at the Colorado Chapter Educational Institute. The institute as of this date has been in

existence for over 20 years and provides education to over 1400 students annually in the Denver,

Colorado area.

Instructional Programs:

Over the course of the past 30 years, have taught building code classes for many ICBO Chapters

including various classes at the Colorado Chapter ICC Educational Institute and the Oregon, Texas and

Utah Building Officials Association Educational programs.

Provided instruction on wood design in accordance with the National Design Specification for Wood

Construction (NDS) for the Structural Engineers Associations of California, New Mexico, Hawaii and

Oregon.

Provided instruction on the Uniform Building Code to government officials responsible for enforcing

the building codes in Japan, Korea, and Taiwan.

University of Wisconsin, College of Engineering:

Taught building code courses during the Annual Building Inspection Seminars, sponsored by the

University of Wisconsin Department of Engineering, Professional Development.

International Accreditation Service, Inc

ISO/IES Standard 17020 (Inspection Bodies) – Attended course and passed written exam given by

IAS Staff, which was aimed at educating bodies which are performing inspections, inspection agencies

that offer listing programs to their clients, and other certification organizations. The course offered

insights in topics such as inspection equipment management, management of inspection personnel and

processes, inspection sample management, internal audits and management review, contact

management and complaint handling.
