MESSAGE FROM NATIONAL PRESIDENT

Dear Members & Fellow Travellers of the Delhi & NCR Chapter,

The time has come to bid adieu to the Core Committee of Delhi and NCR Chapter of NHRDN after two glorious and eventful years. Under their leadership, the Chapter scaled unprecedented heights and must surely rank among the more vibrant chapters of NHRDN in the country.

The large number of programs organized across the spectrum of HR activities from Learning & Development to Industrial Relations, Organization Development and Leadership Development, provided a very powerful value proposition for the Chapter members. From all reports, there has been wide-

spread praise and acclaim for the very high quality and superb organization of activities throughout this two year period.

But, as the poet said,

“The old order changeth, yielding place to new

And God fulfils himself in many ways.........”

Please join me in saluting & thanking the outgoing Leadership team - Dr. P.V. Ramana Murthy, Ms. Ester Martinez and Mr. Ajay Chowdhury - for the great contribution that they have made towards strengthening and furthering the mission of NHRDN, and in wishing them all the very best.

MESSAGE FROM CHAPTER PRESIDENT

“If you want to travel fast, go alone. If you want to travel far, go together.”

Dear NHRDians,

Warm greetings!

It is hard to believe that this is my last message as President of the Delhi & NCR Chapter of NHRDN. It seems like yesterday, when I had taken charge of the Chapter from my good friend, Suresh Tripathi, in April 2012.

The amount of learning I have had through my interactions is memorable. THANK YOU all for giving me this opportunity.

During my tenure, besides various morning & evening monthly events, our team conducted two mega events – 'Women Conference' and 'Young Minds Confluence'. The purpose of conducting Women Conference was to provide a platform to understand & replicate the best practices of various organisations related to the Safety & Security, Inclusive Work-Place and Career Growth of women. The then Honb'le Minister of HRD, Dr. MM Pallam Raju graced the occasion at the inaugural session along with many other eminent personalities during the panel discussions. As part of the event, many eminent organizations shared their best practices on the theme "Creating a Conductive Work Environment for Women". The other mega event, 'Young Minds Confluence' witnessed many industry leaders sharing their stories and experiences on Passion, Expression & Execution and provided the inestimable learning to young professionals. This event was organized along with the partnership of the National Secretariat, thus paving way for an opportunity for many such partnership in future between the Chapters & the National Secretariat. Thanks to Mr. Kamal Singh, Dhananjay Singh & their team for support in making this event a grand success.

I would like to place my deepest sense of gratitude to my Advisory Team without whose guidance; we wouldn't have completed this journey so successfully. I also would like to place on record the excellent job done by my team Ester Martinez, Vice President and Ajay Chowdhury, Secretary along with Core Team Members in the last two years. I may not be mentioning the names of our core team members & other well wishers for their invaluable support, but my heart goes to say a big thanks to all those people. I also thank Bhagat & Balram for their excellent execution of all the above initiatives at the ground level.

I request all our members for their continued support & active participation with the new leadership team as we move forward with NHRDN keeping our passion for our HR profession alive and growing.

Finally, my heartfelt gratitude to each one of you for participation and contribution to our success and also for giving me this opportunity to serve our HR profession and all of you in this manner.Wishing you all success!

Warm regards,PV

P.V. Ramana MurthyPresident, National HRD Network – Delhi & NCR Chapter; and Sr. Vice President & Global Head-HR, Taj Group of Hotels

MESSAGE FROM CHAPTER SECRETARY

Dear Fellow NHRDians,

It has been a roller-coaster ride over the last two years. As I look back, there is a sense of satisfaction for some part, and a sense of incompleteness on the other. I started off, personally, with a deep sense of anticipation and excitement regarding the 'newness' that this team will introduce to the activities of the Delhi and NCR Chapter of NHRDN. Over time, and I don't know how these two years passed, this was replaced by a sense of wanting to pitch in more forcefully, but not being able to. A role change, travel, illness, all contributed to the attention always being diverted somewhere else. A lost opportunity in some sense, but as I said, a satisfying tenure in another sense.

I got to know a lot more enthusiastic HR folks than I otherwise would have, sustained the good governance practices in the Secretariat that I had inherited, could implement some structural changes that resolved some long standing issues with the Chapter, the back-end worked – again, perhaps not to the efficiency levels that one would have wished. A number of new initiatives were launched that were appreciated by the members.

I'd like to place on record my appreciation of the Secretariat team, notably Bhagat and Balram, who work tirelessly (and often thanklessly) to make things happen the way that they do; the Core Team members, people who volunteered their time and efforts, just so that the Chapter would benefit; our Chartered Accountant Mr. Sachdeva, who has stood like a bedrock behind the Chapter, advising and implementing at the same time; and all our sponsors and well-wishers. Nothing of what we have been able to achieve would have been a possibility without them.

Finally, for all the members, my humble gratitude. You have been kind, encouraging, and tolerant. All the best to all of you, have a great year ahead.

Regards,ajay

Ajay ChowdhuryHon. Secretary, Delhi & NCR Chapter- National HRD Network; andPresident & CHRO, SRF Limited

Snapshot of the Year 2012 – 14

In the last two years, the executive team of the Delhi & NCR Chapter has had the privilege, and indeed a great opportunity, to carry forward the NHRDN endeavours and strengthen the HR fraternity for furtherance of NHRDN's mission through connecting with the members.

The Chapter conducted a wide range of events during 2012-14. The main purpose of these events was to engage its members. May 2012 Special Event was designed to put its focus on the business and HR perspectives, apart from a specialist view and to bring focus on the important subject of employee engagement and how it impacts the business performance. June 2012 Special Event was conducted with the objective to bring out the science behind designing an effective talent development program, with the help of the time tested 70:20:10 principle. July Special Event was based to draw from, and build on, our own valuable collective experience of the real world of work which is based on our own personal experience. September Special Event was designed as 'crash course for aligning culture with strategy'. October Special Event was designed to focus on how the HR community needs to lead the creation of a progressive labour-management relationship.

The year 2013-14 began with the April 2013 special event to focus on the Trends and Opportunities for the fiscal year 2013-14. September 2013 Special Event on the theme “Learning Centric Transformation of Future Enterprises” was conducted to know the importance and impact of 'learning'. October 2013 Special Event “Creating World-Class Mid-Level Managers” was designed to focus on mid-level managers who drive the organizational culture to the last employee, create systems that cut bureaucracy and facilitate growth, and are responsible to execute top management strategy while promoting the core values of an organization. December 2013 Special Event was based on the theme “Building & Leveraging Performance Management Systems” to understand the deployment of Performance Management System and its consequences, if not handled properly. January 2014 Special event “The re-invention of the HR manager - What can she / he do differently?” was designed to understand the speed of Change for the society and organization that is increasing by the day and that HR has a key role to play in helping people adapt to change within and outside the organization. February 2014 Special Event “The Power of Digital - How Digital is Transforming HR, Marketing & Advertising?” was conducted to know how HR and Marketing departments can work together to build a bigger brand in digital space

The biennial event, Women's Conference was held in July 2014 on the theme “Creating a Conducive Work Environment for Women" to build a great working environment and to showcase corporate contribution and achievements towards creating a conducive environment of growth, inclusiveness and providing a safe and secure environment for women employees. In this conference, the Chapter created a forum to share best practices, bring awareness among the HR community and raise the bar on gender diversity and inclusion.

Another full day event, Young Mind Confluence was held in April 2014 on the theme “Changing Landscape: Agenda for Action”.

Our journey as the executive team was one with tremendous learning and we are humbled by the generous support and warmth of NHRDN members.

September 2013 Special EventLearning Centric Transformation of Future Enterprises

In a dynamic, unpredictable and tough environment, organizations need to constantly evolve and change to stay relevant to their customers and stakeholders. Organizations which are able to transform proactively rather than reactively are the ones who will lead in their respective sphere and continue to grow. The importance and impact of 'learning' in this journey is an area that is gaining focus. Considering these points, Delhi & NCR Chapter of NHRDN organised September 2013 Special Event “Learning Centric Transformation of Future Enterprises” at FMD Institute of IFFCO at Gurgaon where esteemed panellists shared deep insights on how to transform organizations for the future.

Mr. P.V. Ramana Murthy set the context for the session by sharing his thoughts and insights on the theme. Mr. Murthy invited Mr. Adil Malia, Group President - Human Resources, Essar Group and Ms. Nina Chatrath, a partner in the Leadership Consulting practice of Heidrick and Struggleto give their insights.

Talking about the topic of the event, Mr. Malia mentioned that we live in a world of learning because the new thrive, the old learn to survive and those who do not learn become tablets in corporate graveyards. He also mentioned that we learn by pattern identification – pattern reaffirmation, pattern consolidation and pattern realization and all human behaviour is driven by patterns…responses which are consolidated into sets & are triggered by external & internal stimulations.

Ms. Chatrath discussed about VUCA. In a VUCA World—one characterized by Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity—the traditional skills of leadership are no longer enough. The dilemmas confronting leaders in this time of rapid change require a new set of skills.

The event was attended by over 110HR professionals, academicians and students.

October 2013 Special EventCreating World-Class Mid-Level Managers

Be it a large multinational organization looking to expand globally or a domestic firm with aspirations to scale greater heights, one of the most crucial links in these growth plans are the mid-level managers of an organization. These are the people who drive the organizational culture to the last employee, create systems that cut bureaucracy and facilitate growth, and are responsible to execute top management strategy while promoting the core values of an organization. But, often they do not have any say on the strategies and the policy frameworks which are mostly formulated by the top bosses.

Creating World-Class Mid-Level Managers was the theme for the October 2013 Special Event of Delhi & NCR Chapter of National HRD Network in association with International Institute of Management, (IMI) Delhi. After breakfast, the session commenced with the President of NHRDN-Delhi NCR Chapter& Executive Director-HR Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages, Dr. PV Ramana Murthy welcoming the 110 odd gathering in the IMI auditorium and setting up the context for Ms. Sylva Juliano, an authority on leadership development having spent 13 years with GE in various HR roles including leading mid-level manager development at their Crotonville Leadership Development Center. In her current role as the Coca-Cola University Director of Learning and Development for the Bottling Investments Group (BIG), she conceptualized, designed the framework and implemented successfully the inclusion and development plan for the global business unit with 80,000 employees around the world, having vast cultural diversity.

Ms. Juliano shared valuable insights on the thoughts leading to the process flow adopted for designing the global learning strategy meant to drive business results in a desired operating culture. While providing inputs on quality learning initiatives that build successful managers and leaders who are supposed to bring in organizational transformation, she mentioned that the most important thing one should do before initiating the process is to make an in depth need-analysis by studying high performing teams.

The key attributes that were thought to be important for focused development of managers were cross functional understanding and good functional skills. Based on analytics, the content was created accordingly. To make the program successful, it was necessary to make it participatory in nature and for this it is quintessential to communicate the big picture properly and clearly to both the top management and the mid-level managers.

9

Page 13: CODE OF CONDUCT - National HRDnationalhrd.org/DNCR/AnnualReport2014Web.pdf · CODE OF CONDUCT I will always strive ... 18 Auditor's Report ... Human Resources Management & Corporate

Business dynamics are changing fast in an economically challenging and fiercely competitive environment, leading to retention of high performers remaining a burning issue. The sooner organizations embrace a culture of creating world class middle managers, the better for them.

Ms. Juliano's case study and passionate account enthralled all and was extremely valuable for many young HR leaders and practicing business HR managers.

Prof. Prashant Gupta, Faculty at IMI who has been also associated with learning and development for middle level managers of financial sector later corroborated the importance of shifting mind sets and bringing in the necessary organizational changes towards developing world class mid-level managers and thanked NHRD for setting this learning forum. The event was attended by HR Practitioners, Line Managers & other management professionals, along with some entrepreneurs and students.

December 2013 Special EventBuilding & Leveraging Performance Management System

The Chapter held its monthly event in EMPI Business School, on 19th December'13. The meet brought together CEOs, Senior Executives, HR Officials, and other thought leaders to share their insights and gain new ideas on the changing and challenging roles of an HR Professional.

Mr. Rajan Kalia, who has earlier worked with leading corporations like Coca Cola, Eicher Consultancy, and Max New York Life Insurance, started by asking elementary questions such as “Where are we headed?” “What role does HR play in Performance Management System?” This led to thought provoking discussions by the audience. Topics such as Behavioral Economics and Performance Management System (PMS) were explored, stressing upon “specificity”. “Goals” as a topic was thoroughly explored with valuable insights from the speaker himself, such as “harder goals motivate employees more and especially when there is a personal element in it.” It was noted that the PMS fails because either the organization has too many goals, the ideal of which should be three to five in number, or, too many strategies, with an advice of “keeping goals simple and not smart.”

To supplement this impressive exchange of ideas, the next speaker was Mr. Prasad Kurian, Associate VP- Organization Development and HRBP- Coca Cola and Alternative Beverages. Mr. Kurian spoke on Organization Effectiveness and the various aspects attached to it. He threw light on Performance Management from multiple angles, that of the Employer, the HR functionaries of other organizations, the Line Managers and the employees. He spoke about the step-by-step evolution of PMS in an organization. He talked about the Bell curve model of measuring the Performance Appraisal of the employees working in an organization at the individual level, building accountability and

11

Page 15: CODE OF CONDUCT - National HRDnationalhrd.org/DNCR/AnnualReport2014Web.pdf · CODE OF CONDUCT I will always strive ... 18 Auditor's Report ... Human Resources Management & Corporate

transparency in the PMS process and also about reward principles and philosophy. He also discussed forced distribution, the arguments for and against it, what works and what doesn't and the alternatives to forced ranking. Other topics like calibration process, and validation and leveraging PMS as a tool for building a high performance culture were also discussed at length through the Question and Answer Session which followed the talk.

12

January 2014 Special EventThe re-invention of the HR Manager – What can she/he do differently?

Ms. Ester Martinez, Co-founder and Managing Editor of People Matters welcomed the 110 odd participants in the IMI auditorium and opened the forum by discussing about the two trends to watch out for HR in the year 2014. First, the HR manager needs to look at the business positioning and interact with the business leaders. He or she needs to help the business leaders by giving bandwidth and hence HR needs to work with them, not for them. Second, Talent as a resource is highly passé. Talent is the answer of our competitive advantage and helps us leverage and achieve business opportunities. We need to focus on substance and purpose. She concluded her opening speech by emphasising that how today is a great time to be an HR functionary.

Mr. Bimal Rath, an established HR veteran, started the session by asking the audience what are the challenges that a HR manager faces in workplace today and how they can be handled. He mentioned that while HR needs to be aligned with the senior people in the organization, the biggest failure of HR is that they tend to fall in line with the senior leaders. He emphasized that HR is a neutral party and business leaders want HR to be a mirror for them, and they want the blatant truth. The business people want HR not to stand below them but with them.

“CEO's really need to understand the pulse of the employees which only the HR manager can help with” talking about the HR managers, he mentioned that disagreement need not be impolite and rude. New age CEO's are listening to HR and taking their advice. Lot of business leaders are realizing that you can run business in very different ways rather than traditional hierarchical ways. Secure guys are open to divergence of opinion, criticism and feedback.

“Don't expect that you will win the battle every time”.

13

Page 17: CODE OF CONDUCT - National HRDnationalhrd.org/DNCR/AnnualReport2014Web.pdf · CODE OF CONDUCT I will always strive ... 18 Auditor's Report ... Human Resources Management & Corporate

He shared the Yum! Group example to support this statement. HR guy created a policy where even the last guy on the counter had the liberty of decision making for upto $15. The return was 1:11. He also mentioned that new age employee want policy; they are frustrated with HR because they think that the biggest drawback of HR is red tapism. HR creates big, long processes, and this leads to the new age talent wanting to work for small, upcoming firms and not large businesses.

He said that appreciation is much more valuable than criticism. Focus on recognition, not on appraisal. Find strengths of person rather than finding faults and sending him for T&D. Appreciate and build on employee's strength for successful organization. Personal outlook needs to change.

The session witnessed an overwhelming response of more than 110 participants and was greatly appreciated by one and all.

February 2014 Special EventThe Power of Digital – How Digital is Transforming HR, Marketing & Advertising?

Everyone wants to establish its presence in the Digital space. The question remains as to “What organizations need to do to adapt to this change and create an employer brand which stands out”? February 2014 Special Event at SriSIIM, VasantKunj Institutional Area, New Delhi was organised with Mr. Rob Norman to share insights from his experience from the world of marketing, media, and advertising.

Ever since its advent, the dynamics of digital have been constantly evolving. Growing literally by leaps and bounds, digital displayed its power and reach in events such as Facebook crossing billion users and broadband connections reaching the billion mark.

Mr. Norman, Chief Digital Officer, GroupM Global expressed that now we have no option but to embrace digital. While it might not be an easy task, he said that there are ways to deal with innovations and innovators.

Digital being a constantly evolving medium, brands cannot adapt to every innovation. Thus, to make sure that a particular technology makes sense to the brand, HR need to know what kind of data will it create for them and how will it help. They should also realise that massive changes are not acceptable and thus, before adapting any change, brands should know its infrastructural implications.

Another element that brands should look out for is whether or not a particular innovation helps transfer as a creative asset for the brand. Does it help give a richer experience to the consumers? The last factor to be taken in consideration is identifying the scale at which a particular innovation has to be executed and whether it serves the purpose and gives satisfaction.

We now live in a fragmented sea of brand messages and HR will not be able to able to rely on campaigns like before. Mr. Norman stated that HR now need to determine the needs of the consumers, find out how they prioritise content and innovate accordingly.

The ever was very well received by over 90 delegates..

3rd Women Conference 2013Creating a Conducive Work Environment for Women

Despite the fact that many women have climbed the corporate ladder successfully during the last few decades and made tremendous progress in diverse walks of life, their acceptance beyond the proverbial glass ceiling is still an issue at many places. Insensitivity and intolerance continue, fostered by a feudal mentality that is ever so often prevalent in various sections of our society. Safety and security remain an underlying threat in the work place and beyond.

Keeping these, and many other issues in mind, NHRD-Delhi & NCR Chapter invited India Inc. to showcase their contribution and achievements towards creating a conducive environment of growth, inclusiveness and providing a safe and secure environment for women employees.

While welcoming the 400 plus delegates and setting the context, the Chapter President and Executive Director-HR, Hindustan Coca-Cola Beveragres, Dr. P.V. Ramana Murthy talked about the relationship between inclusion, integrity and diversity and said, "The aim of the conference is to create a common platform for the Government, Law Enforcement agencies, Business and HR Leaders to deliberate on building a conducive work environment for women employees. The forum also provides for corporate India to share best practices on gender diversity and gives an opportunity to learn and replicate those practices in various organisations". He also mentioned that HR has a responsibility to think and act beyond their organisational boundaries and move into societal aspects related to talent. “Overall, this conference aims at bringing a positive change in the way we treat our female talent at the workplace”, he added. The conference was graced by Hon'ble Union Minister of Human Resources Development, Dr. MM Pallam Raju, who mentioned the theme to be close to his heart and was fascinated by the overwhelming response it generated. In his key note address, he expressed the Government's concern on this and said, “The lowest common denominator in this case is the womenfolk in rural India, whose empowerment and transformation is of utmost importance today. Along with UNESCO, the Government's initiative for literacy for rural women is the top-most agenda, targeting 80% of village women to be incorporated in the program.

Gender sensitization is being undertaken at every level starting from schools and being reinforced in villages where male dominance is traditional.” Talking about the urban areas and metros, he mentioned, serious introspection is required at all levels and while the Government is trying to secure infrastructure, the idea of empowering women needs to be consciously driven by associations like NHRD.

Dr. Reena Ramachandran, Member, Dept . of Performance Management, Cabinet Secretariat, GOI, shared some of the facts on the number of women employees finding their place on the topmost level indicating that the 'glass ceiling' really is prevalent in many industries. Sharing insights from historical studies and recent global survey results, Mr. Rajeev Dubey, National President, NHRDN and President - Group HR, Mahindra & Mahindra, cited that societies which offered opportunity for women to contribute, prospered more. Even in recent times, it is observed that organizations having more women in the top ranks, are the ones showing better productivity and profitability.

Regional Director and CEO Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages, Mr. T Krishna Kumar, enthralled all, citing thought-provoking examples from his personal and professional life. He mentioned that in order to change the environment, the awareness has to cover our life 360 degrees and go beyond the workplace, in particular to society at large, and starting definitely from the home. The Country HRO of CITI Group, Ms. Anuranjita Kumar, deliberated on the challenges faced by a working woman in balancing personal & professional commitments and the critical role an organization needs to play in providing support to the women employees. She mentioned how the Citi Group supported her during her stint in London with family and children in India, without which it would not have been possible for her to cope with the situation.

Talking on Safety and Security for women, a key topic of the conference, the father of Indian BPO industry Mr. Raman Roy, Chairman & MD of Quattro BPO Solutions, shared his experience on creating a culture in the organization where respect and care for women should be each individual employees' responsibility. His story on how an idea of letting the women in the organization feel special by giving them a manicure pack as gift, backfired and was misinterpreted by some as a symbol of sexism, sparked off a parallel debate on what was a better gift for women staff - a pack of manicure or a pepper spray.

17

Page 21: CODE OF CONDUCT - National HRDnationalhrd.org/DNCR/AnnualReport2014Web.pdf · CODE OF CONDUCT I will always strive ... 18 Auditor's Report ... Human Resources Management & Corporate

The debate was ultimately put to rest by Ms. Akila Agrawal, partner in the Corporate Transaction Team at Amarchand Mangaldas, when she concluded her speech on a lighter note stating, “A pepper spray gift can be incorporated in the induction kit but we women do not mind a pack of manicure as a women's-day gift”. Meanwhile, Col. Deepankar Chaudhary, Lead Consultant – Physical Security Practice, Mahindra SSG demonstrated how with the use of simple things carried in hand bags one can foil a possible assault and momentarily immobilize an aggressor. Ms. Shukla Wassan, Sr. VP-Legal & Company Secretary, Hindustan Coca Cola Beverages spoke about policy formulations, regulations, ethics while Ms. L Sesha Kumari, Former Head – HR Nagarjuna Fertilizers, Kakinada, shared some interesting anecdotes from her experience of working in a manufacturing setup.

The delegates and speakers were left enchanted by a talented group of students from Apeejay Business school who depicted the daily life of a working woman through a short play, reflecting the struggle, the pain, the melancholy, the multitasking ritual, the resentment which she goes through, before finally emerging as a winner, managing office and home, playing the role of a boss, mother, wife, daughter – all in complete harmony. The tremendous impact of the play and the emotion it evoked could be felt in the sessions that followed.

Panelists Ms. Nirmala Menon, Founder & CEO, Interweave Consulting, Mr. Amit Agarwal, Sr, VP Genpact; Anjali Byce Nair, Director HR, SKF Ltd, with Mr. P. Dwarakanath; Advisor - Group Human Capital, Max India Ltd. chairing the session, deliberated on stronger policies and better practices for an inclusive workplace, more importantly the need to generate the cognitive awareness to reclaim the freedom every human being is born with, irrespective of gender biasness. Dr. Shalini Sarin, VP – HR Country Partner, Schneider Electric, deliberated the fact of not having enough women business heads driving profit centres and not just running human resources.

Intense discussions continued till the end with the final session addressing the issue of career progression for women, considering the fact that a large number of women fade out in the mid-life career graph, when it comes to choosing between career growth path and family matters. Ms. Leena Sahijwani Director C&B, GE India; Ms. Prameela Kalive, Sr. VP, Zensar Technologies and Ms. Monisha Chadha, Head C&B and D&A, Philips, mentioned that a happy mother is what kids want nowadays, an at-home-mother and a 'suffering Site' role model is no more considered appropriate. Ms. Maria Luisa Perez, Director Centre for International Development, Australian Institute of Management, revealed how the difficulty level of coping with deadlines and taking care of family, was higher for women in Australia or other parts of the globe where the facility of having domestic help as proxy, is not available, neither prevalent. The session was chaired by Ms. Ester Martinez, MD-People Matters, who concluded with a succinct remark, “It is not a matter of only providing a safe environment to women which is a hygiene factor for the eco system, it is more important to work towards creating a mindset among people to respect women and being sensitive and tolerant towards them”.

Young members from business schools were seen taking keen interest in the proceedings. With a conviction to bring about positive change Dr. Amit Gupta, Chairman, Jagannath International Management School, Kalkaji, Delhi, said, “While encouraging higher education for the women student, we wanted to set the tone for societal changes as well. One of our responsibilities was to sensitize both genders, of future business managers at an early stage, about the fact that there are certain challenges faced by working women, which are unique to them. This one day simulated learning, was an eye opener for students and made it easy for us to drive the point”.Focused on the theme 32 Best Practices were received by 24 organizations viz: ABC Consultants; BAE Systems India (Services); Fluor Daniel India; GSK Consumer Healthcare; Infotech Enterprises; Jones Lang LaSalle India; RBS India; SAP Labs India; Schneider Electric; Shell India Markets; United Technologies India; University of Petroleum & Energy Studies; Zensar Technologies; IBM Daksh; Bharat Petroleum Corporation; Bharti Foundation; Boston Scientific India; Citi India; Coca-Cola India; GE India; HCL Technologies; Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages; SRF Ltd.; Tata Capital. Young Minds ConfluenceChanging Landscape: Agenda for Action

Delhi & NCR Chapter of NHRDN conducted a full day event on 9th April, 2014 on the theme of “Young Minds Confluence – Changing Landscape: Agenda for Action”.

The event was a great learning experience which witnessed industry leaders sharing their stories and experiences on Passion, Communication and Execution. The event started with the felicitation of Dr. MB Athreyaon his being awarded with Padma Bhushan by Govt. of India. The felicitated guest, a Renowned Management Consultant and also a member of NHRDN shared his experience and truly inspired the participants with his insights. As passion is a fire within, so there must be a Mission and Vision that drives this passion. Dr. Athreya explained the importance of Mission and Vision of a young Indian HRD Executive and also explained “Total Management Model”. It was indeed a fantastic learning from the Management Guru.

The event was inaugurated with an inaugural address by Mr. Venkatesh Kini, President, Coca-Cola India and South West Asia, who emphasised that it is the Passion/Drive/Motivation that differentiates between success and not-so-success. He also urged HR Professionals to stress more upon the “Human” part Human Resource and less on the “Resource” part.

Mr. PV Ramana Murthy, Executive Director-HR, Hindustan Coca Cola Beverages told a story from his experience, thus beautifully setting the context to more than 110 participants of the event. Story was as – Once Mr. Murthy went to a B-School for recruiting and after all the process, closed onto two candidates. One candidate was extremely good in academics and the other one was fairly mediocre. When Mr. Murthy talked to the professors there, they told him about the social work done by the second student who was mediocre in academics. The kind of social work of the second candidate showed his passion and zeal to perform. As the requirement was of only one candidate, the second one was picked and he eventually grew up to VP level in the organization. Now the context was absolutely crystal clear to the audience.

Session 1 – Passion: The Fire Within was moderated by Mr. Avinash Kohli (VP-HR, Citi India) and other speakers were Mr. P Dwarkanath (Advisor – Group Human Capital, Max India), Mr. Pankaj Bansal (Co-Founder & CEO, PeopleStrong) and Mr. Gulshan Sharma (President, NIMA).

Mr. Dwarkanath shared that being an HR professional, his job is to develop CEOs and thus he is a kind of king-maker, and this is what he enjoys in HR profession. This part of enjoying what he does fuels the passion and makes him successful. Mr. Pankaj Bansal also shared his journey of PeopleSrong and one

could easily see the passion that he carries about the company and the work he does. So the conclusion is that first you need to enjoy what you are doing, only then you can ignite the passion within.

Session 2 – Expression: Connecting the Dots….was moderated by Ms. Neha Saxena (Sr. Manager, GE India) and speakers included – Mr. Nishchae Suri (Head – People & Change Practice, KPMG), Ms. Harpreet Datta (VP HR, SMS India) and Mr. Rajneesh Bawa (Director HR India, Case New Holland).

The session was based around importance of right communication, at right time and with the right people. Among many stories shared by the speakers, one was the story about importance of communication in stopping the grape-wine, shared by Ms. Harpreet Datta. The session also witnessed an interesting exchange of ideas on the topic of dichotomy between diplomacy and transparency.

Mr. Rajneesh Bawa shared very insightful statement – “Listen with intent of listening, not with intent of replying”.

Session 3 – Execution: Mantra for the Ultimate Success was moderated by Mr. Gurpreet Bajaj, Head – Talent Development, MakeMyTrip.com and other speakers were Ms. Anupama Babbar (VP-HR Aricent), Ms. Seema Bangia (Head HR, Mahindra Defence Systems) and Mr. Sandeep Girotra (Global Head – HR, Ranbaxy).

It is said that strategy is as good as its execution, the session focussed on role of execution in shaping a bright career, building trust and the personal brand. Ms. Anupama Babbar shared some of the reasons for the failure of execution, including lack of sponsorship, and potential non-alignment due to different teams of strategy and execution. Mr. Sandeep Girotra mentioned that “Execution eats strategy for breakfast”.The event ended with a vote of thanks from Ms. Ester Martinez (Co-founder & Managing Editor, People Matters).
