INTRODUCTION

5

Brigidine College Indooroopilly is proud of its Cocurricular Program. A strong tradition of excellence and achievement has been established through the wide variety of opportunities available to students. This allows all girls to have a richer school experience.

Learning and the disposition to learn can take many forms. Research tells us that a part of our uniqueness as individuals is that we can assimilate knowledge in many more ways than through the traditional written and spoken modes. So on a personal level, in addition to the joy of participating, competing and achieving, the girls learn valuable life skills such as team work, cooperation, goal setting, time management and problem solving through the many activities offered at Brigidine.

We strongly encourage all students to participate in, at least, two activities each year. While many activities may take place outside of normal school hours, it is important that students understand that school rules and expectations still apply. We also encourage parental involvement with coaching, managing, transporting and supporting teams.

I am pleased with the range of opportunities on offer and grateful to the many people whose support and commitment ensures these activities can continue.

BRENDAN CAHILL College Principal

PLEASE NOTE: The Cocurricular Program can vary from year to year, depending on the needs of students and the availability

of staff at the time.

A program cost applies to most activities and will be advertised prior to signing up.

CHESS AND CRIBBAGE

12

OVERVIEW

Chess is making a comeback at Brigidine College after an absence of almost 20 years. It will be run alongside Cribbage – a card game played by two or more persons using a standard 52-card deck.

Research on chess in schools demonstrates that playing chess helps students improve their logical and abstract thinking, decision-making and creativity. Leading in your field takes courage, a lot of energy, strong intuition, adaptability, desire to achieve, and persistence. These traits can be developed through playing chess.

Chess players come from all walks of life including: Bill Gates (founder of Microsoft), John Paul II (Pope), Anna Kournikova (tennis player), and Julia Roberts (actress).

COMMITMENT

The Club practises at lunchtimes and occasionally after school from 3.15pm to 4.15pm (leading up to tournaments).

UNIFORM

School uniform including chess badge is required for all interschool competitions.

COMPETITIONS

A number of competitions are held throughout the year. The College Championships are held during Terms 4 over a five week period after school and at lunch times. Players qualify for the Championships by regularly attending lunchtime practices.

PRIVATE SPEECH LESSONS

30

Students develop skills of communication relating to discussion and conversation, public speaking and pre- sentations, interpretation of literature and role play activities. Through practical experiences, students grow in self-awareness and self-confidence allowing them to present in a more assured way at school, public and family functions. Also, students learn to interact socially in a more dynamic and authentic manner.

EQUIPMENT

STEM CLUB

37

DESCRIPTION

The purpose of the STEM Club is to motivate and encourage students to continue with learning pathways and careers related to Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths. The Club promotes and facilitates a cross-curricular educational environment that aims to enhance student outcomes in the classroom.

The practical nature of the STEM Club engages students in critical and creative thinking, including under- standing interrelationships in systems when solving complex problems. A systematic approach to experimen- tation, problem-solving, prototyping and evaluation instils in students the value of planning and reviewing processes to realise ideas.

ACTIVITIES

Students engage in a range of scientific investigations, developing confidence in their own ability to plan and develop prototypes to meet the requirements of particular challenges. Typical materials used include every- day materials in addition to scientific apparatus and technology, example Little Bits and LEGO Robots. Other activities may include workshops with guest speakers/mentors and/or excursions to give students hands-on experiences like visiting the CSIRO EcoSciences Precinct to experience a real life working laboratory, the QUT Women in Engineering Day and being involved in a RoboGals workshop.

TECHNOVATION

40

DESCRIPTION

Technovation (Techgirls in Australia) is the world’s largest and longest running tech competition for girls. Teams of young women identify a problem, create an app to solve it, code the app, build a company to launch the app in the market and pitch their plan to experts all in three months. The TechGirl Movement (www.techgirlsmovement.org) was set up with the support of the Queensland Government and other organ- isations to encourage girls to become more involved with technology and to raise awareness of technology career options for girls and to have access to positive female information technology role models.

ACTIVITIES

Each team has a teacher as well as a nominated member of the broader technology community who support the students as mentors and coaches. The Project Deliverables include: App source code, a video pitch of about 4 mins, an App demo video approx. 2 mins, a business plan, team photo, 100 ¬word App description and post ¬survey. The activity teaches girls life skills such as how to identify problems, design and test solu- tions, collaborate in a team and communicate to different audiences.

COMMITMENT

The competition runs over three months with the Project Deliverables submitted by end of July. Activities are largely completed in the students’ own time. As such, participants must be able to work independently as well as show commitment and dedication to the required tasks. Meetings are held weekly with the school mentor while contact with their community mentor is by email or Skype, on a regular basis.
