When he had finished playing, it is reported that Miss Tiffin, an Ampico employee exclaimed “Don’t change a note!” 2. An American in Paris, from the film of the same name, is played as a four-hand version by Frank Milne. It is a highly regarded performance, even though it’s likely he added notes mechanically. 3. Lee Sims (1898-1966) made 14 Ampico roll recordings in the late 1920s. His style borders on 1920s jazz, and he is said to have influenced the renowned jazz pianist Art Tatum. Sims made numerous disc recordings. 4. J. Milton Delcamp (1892-1931) began his career playing for silent movies, which led him to making piano roll recordings. He joined Ampico in 1922, and became head of the Popular Music Department, also appearing regularly on radio. When Ampico purchased piano makers Mason & Hamlin in 1928, Delcamp was promoted as the manager. However, he died of tuberculosis before he could take up the position. His wife had predeceased him, so Delcamp’s parents raised the couple’s three children. 5. Frank Milne (1887-1959) spent most of his working life in piano roll companies. During the 1930s, he produced a wide range of rolls played in a relaxed style that differed from the 1920s uptempo style. His playing is much loved by collectors. The last factory produced roll was issued in 1941 (by Milne) and is included in this selection.
