Cocktail Music and Medleys – Title order 2
Cocktail Music and Medleys – Composer order 14
Cocktail Music and Medleys – Pianist order 31 The 200 MIDI files in this selection are often described as Dinner Music, or Cocktail Music. Over 150 of the roll
recordings in this selection were produced in the 1930s, the remainder in the late 1920s, with one recording (by
Gershwin) dated to 1919. Popular music in the 1930s has a more relaxed style compared to previous eras, and much of it
is played by Frank Milne under his various pseudonyms. Numerous medleys are included, such as Hits of the Day,
Dinner Music, Home Harmonies (older style songs) and medleys of three or four songs that were popular at the time.
Most of the well-known composers of the day are represented, such as Irving Berlin, Hoagy Carmichael, George
Gershwin, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, Harry Revel, Richard Rodgers and Harry Warren.
Broadway pianists Adam Carroll, Victor Arden and Phil Ohman play around half the music in this selection, the
remainder is played by Frank Milne, under his own name and various pseudonyms. Milne made his own arrangements,
and these are much admired by those familiar with his playing. He made no disc recordings.
A few highlights
• April In Paris by Vernon Duke, played by Edgar Fairchild
• Blue Hawaii, issued in 1937, by Leo Robin & Ralph Rainger, played by Frank Milne
• Dinner Music 11 to 19 all played by Frank Milne, giving over an hour of relaxed music
• It's a Sin to Tell a Lie by Billy Mayhew, issued September 1936, played by Frank Milne
• L'Amour Toujours L'Amour (Love Everlasting) by Rudolp Friml, played by Adam Carroll
• Medley starting with Fresh As A Daisy, the last factory produced roll (mid 1941), played by Milne
• Melodies in Blue by various composers, issued 1937, played by Frank Milne.
• Midsummer Medley – a compilation of late 1930’s songs, played by Frank Milne
• My Wild Irish Rose by Chauncey Olcott, arranged and played by Lee Sims
• Snow White selections from the 1938 animated movie, played by Frank Milne
• Star Dust by Hoagy Charmichael, played by Emse Dawson
Background stories
1. Adam Carroll (1897-1974) recorded his arrangement for Ampico of L'Amour Toujours L'Amour in 1928. When he
had finished playing, it is reported that Miss Tiffin, an Ampico employee exclaimed “Don’t change a note!”
2. An American in Paris, from the film of the same name, is played as a four-hand version by Frank Milne. It is a
highly regarded performance, even though it’s likely he added notes mechanically.
3. Lee Sims (1898-1966) made 14 Ampico roll recordings in the late 1920s. His style borders on 1920s jazz, and he is
said to have influenced the renowned jazz pianist Art Tatum. Sims made numerous disc recordings.
4. J. Milton Delcamp (1892-1931) began his career playing for silent movies, which led him to making piano roll
recordings. He joined Ampico in 1922, and became head of the Popular Music Department, also appearing regularly
on radio. When Ampico purchased piano makers Mason & Hamlin in 1928, Delcamp was promoted as the manager.
However, he died of tuberculosis before he could take up the position. His wife had predeceased him, so Delcamp’s
parents raised the couple’s three children.
5. Frank Milne (1887-1959) spent most of his working life in piano roll companies. During the 1930s, he produced a
wide range of rolls played in a relaxed style that differed from the 1920s uptempo style. His playing is much loved
by collectors. The last factory produced roll was issued in 1941 (by Milne) and is included in this selection.
