Blue Jay Bean (Bush, Dry) #1009 CO1Blue Jay is a nice early snap bean with good flavor. The green pods are

produced in abundance and the dried seed is navy blue with beige streaks and

can be used as a dry bean. Plant in full sun, water moderately. 45+ seeds/pkt

Golden Rocky (Bush) Our Favorite! #1018 CO1(54 days) Open-pollinated. Heirloom from France, also known as Beurre

de Rocquencourt, noted for its slender juicy pods that melt in your mouth.

Germinates well in cool wet conditions. Stands out as vigorous and consistent

when others falter in excessive rainfall and insufficient heat. 55+ seeds/pkt

Royal Burgandy (Bush) #1012 CO2 60 Days. This bean is absolutely gorgeous! Violet-purple outside and bright

green inside, it’s fun for kids to grow and has a great flavour. Pods are 6 inches

long and turn green after cooking. Upright, 24 inch tall plants hold their pencil-

shaped pods off the ground. Royal Burgundy grows exceptionally well under

Jacob’s Cattle Bean (Bush, Dry) #1003 CO2Tender Annual Bush. These are striking white beans speckled with red. Their rich

meaty flavor makes them a top choice for homemade baked beans. This variety

cooks in half the time of most dry beans. Reliable early yields makes them

Canadian Wild Goose Bean (Bush, Dry) #1015 LGA lovely white and grey speckled dry bean with an orange-brown ring around

the hilum or eye. Self-supporting habit, 4-6 beans per pod, small to medium

sized. Does well with minimal tending, good productivity. This variety is listed

as Rare/Endangered. Very hard to find. We are one of the only Canadian seed

Runner Bean Mix #1016 CO2We love runner beans! They can be used as small, tasty snap beans, green shelly

beans, or you can leave them as an ornamental and then harvest your own seed.

Very long, dependable harvest season is great for home gardeners. Beneficial

Jacob’s Cattle Bean “Alders Rockwell Strain” #1013 LGThis other Nova Scotian strain of Jacob’s Cattle looks nothing like the typical

variety. This seed stock has been grown for over eight decades by the Alders and

Rockwell families from Lakeville and the pretty beans are predominantly reddish-

brown with tan speckles. These nearly double in size when soaked, giving nice

Black Coco (Bush, Dry) #1006 CO2 95 days. Black Coco’s 5 inch long, round pods are easy to pick from 22-24 inch

tall plants. They make a good snap bean, or wait a couple of weeks longer to

harvest that traditional black, dry shelling bean tucked inside. Black Coco soup

Lino Cisco’s Bird Egg (Bush, Dry) #1002 CO285 days. Family heirloom brought to Missouri by covered wagon in the 1880s

by Lina’s grandmother. Lina Sisco was one of the six original members of Seed

Saver’s Exchange, which was founded in 1975. Large tan bean with maroon

Collards #3006 CO2Collards are very tolerant of both heat and cold; in fact, their flavor is

sweetened by a little frost. Sow seeds directly in early spring or in late summer

for a fall crop; or start indoors 5 to 7 weeks before setting out. If you want tall

plants with full-sized leaves to harvest all at once space the seedlings 15 inches

apart. For smaller plants with leaves that can be picked as they arise, space

Early Purple Vienna Kohlrabi #3018 CO1Delicious cabbage-flavoured bulbs. Sweet, white flesh with a purple skin, can be

BrassicasCabbage Growing Tips: Cabbage must be started indoors 6 weeks before your last frost date. You can direct sow a crop for fall harvest in mid-summer. Planting depth: 1/4-1/2”. Plant early spring, early summer or fall. Avoid planting cabbage in the same spot each year as with any cabbage family crop. Cabbage plants need up to 1 1/2 inches of water a week. Well- amended soil is vital to ensure vigorous growth. Cabbage is bothered by few insects and diseases. Floating row covers keep most insects at bay. Harvest cabbage heads when they have formed tight, firm heads. Cut the stem below the head but do not pull the remaining plant. Smaller cabbage heads often develop near the base of harvested heads. Days to maturity: 85-95 days, 6-12 days to germinate.

Cucumber, Marketmore #3302 CO1Mid-season, dark green standard open-pollinated cucumber. Good disease

resistance, nice 8” fruits, high productivity, very popular. 50+ seeds/pkt

Cucumber, Little Leaf Pickling #3301 CO1(60 days) An open-pollinated white-spined parthenocarpic cucumber, Little Leaf

sets fruit without pollination, so may be left under row cover the entire season.

Compact vines with smaller-than-normal leaves save space and leave the mature

cucumbers much more visible. Despite the plants’ emaciated appearance, they

produce a huge number of cukes, even under stress. The blocky fruits are a little

smaller than what we were used to, but they serve a dual purpose, pickling well

while also providing good fresh eating. 40+ Seeds/pkt

Cucumber, Shintokiwa #3303 CO1Long-Fruited Cucumber (62 days) Open-pollinated. Tom Vigue and Adam

Tomash both highly recommend this productive smooth-skinned long slender

cucumber that first surfaced in the Turtle Tree catalog. The hands-down

winner at Tomash’s trial, combining looks, health and flavor. The fruits,

averaging 9–10” and growing up to an edible size of 1’ in good fertility, are

sweet, crisp and juicy without bitterness. One trial taster described their

flavor as “flowery, buttery and delicious.” A favorite for fermented pickles.

Cucumber, Suhyo, Long #3304 CO1(61 days) Open-pollinated. Known for its sweet mild burpless flavor, this

Asian cucumber grows up to 15” long with a curly shape if unsupported. For

straighter fruit that packs better grow these in his greenhouse in vertical

hedges, stretching Trellis Plus netting between conduits. These make good

dense pickling cukes if picked young enough. Sets well in heat. 40+ seeds/pkt

Cucumber, Boothby’s Blond #3305 CO2(63 days) Open-pollinated. Maine boasts this heirloom cucumber, maintained

for five generations by the Boothby family of Livermore. Boothby’s short

plump oval fruits average 3–4” and become yellower as they mature. Creamy

exteriors with contrasting black spines and juicy refreshing interiors. Larger

seed cavities than most cukes, but the seeds actually add to the mild sweet

flavor that makes the fruits so good for eating out of hand. Boothby’s usually

lacks the bitter after taste so common in many of the other white cukes we’ve

trialed. Has the “cool” texture uncommon in American cukes. 40+ seeds/pkt

CucurbitsCucumbers are heat-loving plants. Direct sow 1/2” deep when the soil has warmed up. Thin seedlings to 12 - 36” apart. Trellising the vines saves space. Companions: beans aid growth; nasturtiums deter insect pests; radishes deter cucumber beetles.

Pumpkin, New England Sugar or Small Sugar #3320 CO1The Small Sugar pumpkin is known for having exceptional flavor and texture.

A petite variety, the Small Sugar pumpkin grows to be 7-10 inches in diameter.

One of the sweetest varieties, it has smooth, orange skin and slight ridges. Its

bright orange flesh is known not only for its flavor but for its firm flesh that

Pumpkin, Variety Mix #3321 CO2Pumpkins growing everywhere! To help you get in the Pumpkin spirit, we offer

Pumpkin, Long Pie Our Favorite! #3322 CO1(95 days) Also known as Nantucket Pie Pumpkin. This variety dates back to at

least 1832, The 5-8 pound fruits are picked anytime after they begin to change

color to orange; they will ripen successfully in storage. Makes the most amazing

pies! Fruits look like overgrown zucchinis, but the telltale sign is an orange spot

where the otherwise all-green elongated fruit rested on the ground. One of the

best for continued ripening after picking, Long Pie keeps all winter. 25+ seeds/pkt

Pumpkin, Howden #3323 CO2(115 days) Cucurbita pepo Open-pollinated. For 40 years Howden’s symmetrical

fruits with hard ridged skin and thick flesh have so much set the standard for

large round jack-o’-lanterns both for fresh market and shipping that they are now

a New England tradition. Large spreading vines produce 4–6 deep orange fruits

per plant, typically much more uniform than Connecticut Field while weighing

20-35 lb, often able to ripen fully in our climate. Developed by John Howden in

Massachusetts and introduced by Harris Moran in 1973. 20+ seeds/pkt

Pumpkin, Casper #3319 CO2(115 days) Cucurbita pepo. Up to 15lbs, very sweet, perfect for pies and baking.

Great Halloween pumpkin, as it is almost completely smooth and great for

Winter Squash, Uncle David’s Dakota Dessert Buttercup/Kabocha #3324 CO2(95 days) Cucurbita maxima . David Podoll calls this strain “the original

buttercup.” It has been in his family for 70 years. They’ve been selecting it for 40

years, crossing it with hubbards and other maximas, primarily for color, taste,

sweetness, and vigor and hardiness in cold weather, but also for thick flesh,

small seed cavities and higher productivity. 20+ seeds/pkt

Eggplant, Florida High #4101 CO2Standard market variety bred in Florida in the 1940s for the commercial trade.

Vigorous, upright, well branched plants bear continuously throughout the

season. Large purple-black pear-shaped fruits with white flesh are held high

off the ground. Disease and drought resistant. 75-85 days from transplant.

Eggplants are slow growers and heat-lovers, meaning that they need to be

started early indoors to produce fruit. Sow seed 1/4” deep in a light soil mixture,

weeks before the last frost. Harden off & transplant to a warm, protected, sunny

location, when soil has warmed, 12” apart. 35+ seeds/pkt

Watermelon, Sugar Baby #3339 CO2This is one of the classic open-pollinated watermelons suited to short season

gardening! Pink red flesh, 6-10 lbs, sweet juicy flavour, crisp flesh. Hard rind,

not easily damaged, ripens to a very dark green-black. Compact vines produce

plenty of fruit, not too seedy. Reliable producer in 80+ days. Introduced in 1955.

Start seeds indoors 3-4 weeks prior to last frost, or direct seed into warm

soil after the last frost. Plant in hills 3-4’ apart. Plants will thrive with regular

watering, good compost, and mulch. 20 seeds/pkt

Noir des Carmes Melon #3340 LGA French Heirloom that is named for the Carmelite Monks who once grew them

in France. It is in the true Cantaloupe group and looks quite different then most

melons. The very dark green (almost black) skin turns to yellow then orange

when ripe and averages 3-6lbs. The flesh is orange, sweet and very fragrant.

Delicious variety. Matures in 70 to 85 days after transplanting. Approx. 20

seeds/pkg.

PumpkinsEasy to grow. Seeds may be started indoors 3-4 weeks before the last frost or direct-sown when temperatures and the soil have warmed. Sow seed 1-2” deep and thin to 3-4’ apart. Companions: corn, beans. Nasturtiums and marigolds deter squash bugs and other pests and oregano helps overall growth.

Winter SquashMay be direct-seeded or transplanted. Direct seeding: Sow 4–5 seeds per hill when weather has warmed after danger of frost. Allow 4–6 feet between hills. Thin to 3 best plants. Use row covers and low tunnels to hasten maturity and reduce insect damage. Transplanting: Start indoors three weeks before setting out. Do not disturb the roots. Transplant bush varieties 18” apart, vining varieties 30” apart. Tender, not frost hardy. Heavy nitrogen feeders. Excessive heat and/or drought can prevent blossom set, reduce yields. Winter squash can take one or two light frosts on the vine. To improve flavor and storage, field cure for at least 10 days after harvest, covering if hard frost threatens. Store under proper conditions, at least 50° and 60–70% relative humidity in a place with good air circulation. Do not pile up squash.

Winter Squash, Burgess Buttercup #3337 LGThe most popular market variety in this area, well-known for its fine texture and

sweet, dry, bright orange flesh. Considered by many to be one of the best eating

squashes ever. Reliable producer of solid, 3-4 lb, round, dark-green squash with

a lighter green ‘cup’ area underneath. Excellent keeper, easy to peel, adaptable

to a wide range of recipes, high in beta-carotene. Good choice for smaller

gardens, moderate-sized plants won’t take over. 20+ seeds/pkt

Winter Squash, Zeppelin Delicata #3326 CO2(100 days) Cucurbita pepo. Zeppelin is good Delicata, from an old strain that was

not affected when the trade allowed this beloved 1894 heirloom to be crossed

by desert gourds. The lovely ivory-colored oblong 1 lb fruits with dark green

stripes have the unsurpassed sweetness that gives Delicata its good reputation.

In storage the green stripes turn orange and the cream background sometimes

Winter Squash, Spaghetti #3325 CO1(90-100 days) Days to germination: 10 to 14 days. Full sun. Regular watering.

Loose, fertile and well-draining soil. The name of the spaghetti squash comes

from its unique flesh. When cooked, the fibers give the squash very distinctive

strands that look a lot like orange spaghetti. You can’t eat spaghetti squash raw,

and its best baked. The inside flesh is scraped out with a fork, to help bring out

the “spaghetti” nature of the squash. Extremely high in vitamin A, good sources

of potassium, fiber and vitamin C. 20 seeds/pkt

Winter Squash, Anna Swartz Hubbard #3333 CO2Flesh is similar in flavor and color to a sweet potato. Fruits weigh 5-8 pounds.

Anna Swartz received the seeds of this family heirloom squash from a friend

in the 1950s. She loved this variety because of its extremely hard shell and

excellent storage ability. 20+ seeds/pkt

Zucchini, Costata Romanesca #3332 CO1(60 days) Open-pollinated. Deeply striped and ribbed, Costata resembles

Cocozelle, with a distinctive sweet mildly nutty flavor. Also a productive source

for tasty male squash blossoms and good for stuffing even when the fruits

Turnip, Gilfeather Our Favorite! #2017 LG(85 days) Brassica napus x Brassica rapa. This white-fleshed heirloom has put

Wardsboro, VT, (population 900) on the culinary map. At the end of October

each year, Wardsboro hosts a festival at which Gilfeather is served in all the

dishes. Although it has come down in folklore as a turnip, it is really an inter-

species cross between a rutabaga and a true turnip, big-knobbed and bulky with

small hairy tendrils growing on its light green skin. It was either developed

or discovered by John Gilfeather in the late 1800s.100+ seeds/pkt

Turnip, Laurentian #2015 LGOld, standard, heirloom swede turnip for storage. Large, purple-shouldered,

Carrots, Atomic Red #6004 CO2(74 days) Open-pollinated. This Imperator type is really red with a hint of purple

on the outside of the 4–6” cylindrical roots. Slice it open to rings of color, the

red rind giving way to a deep orange interior with a lighter core. Roots taste

mild and sweet when raw. Keeps its color when cooked and develops a yummy

Carrots, Dragon #6001 CO2(90 days) The most refined purple carrot available; bred by John Navazio. Sure to

be the best selling carrot at specialty and farmers’ markets. Beautiful red-purple

exterior provides an amazing contrast with the yellow-orange interior when

CarrotsDaucus carota Easy to grow. Surface sow seed on well-drained and well-worked garden soil in spring and tamp down firmly. Light soil like sandy soil and peat-types are best. Thinning the seedlings to 2 - 3” apart is the key to a good carrot crop. Tedious work but worth it!

Culture: Very hardy. Early carrots can be sown by late April. Can take up to 3 weeks to germinate; keep rows from drying out for faster emergence. Sow carrots for winter storage in mid-late June. A few points of clarification. Most of the seeds in our catalog are grown here on the farm, however there are some varieties that we do not grow due to reasons such as seed crop failure, time, space and isolation distances from other plants from the same species, therefore we offer a some varieties from other reputable growers who follow high standards and quality. We currently offer seeds from High Mowing, West Coast Seeds, Baker’s Creek, and Fedco, and local growers to supplement our selection. We do germination tests on all of our seed to ensure that minimum standards are maintained and we do roguing and plant selection to ensure our seed quality. “In agriculture, roguing refers to the act of identifying and removing plants with undesirable characteristics from agricultural fields. Rogues are removed from the fields to preserve the quality of the crop being grown.”

All of our seed offered is open-pollinated, non-GMO, untreated and no F1 hybrids. Therefore you can save your own seed from any of the seeds we offer. It will be either certified organic, or naturally and locally grown with no use of pesticides or herbicides used. The one exception may be the flower mixes.
