As a global company it is important to have good communication as engineers, architects, contractors and owners could be located in different countries. The ability to service each one of our customers across the entire contract chain is where AkzoNobel excels. With representatives in over 80 countries we are ideally placed to service every one of your needs.

ConsultationSpecifications for coatings should be developed through a consultative process ensuring that your asset gets the best protection available. This will be two-way communication allowing us to understand the processes and potential issues each asset or piece of equipment will face, meaning we can specify the correct coatings solution.

ConsistencyWorking with AkzoNobel can help to ensure that you have confidence in coatings supply wherever you work or wherever a project is located across the globe. Product quality is of the utmost importance to us and ensuring consistency of that quality is essential in continuing to strengthen our reputation.

Product range and track record are obviously key components for successful in-field performance and increased confidence in coatings, however they are only part of the story. To ensure a successful coating project the most important aspect is the skills of the people involved.

As a coatings company we invest heavily in our staff, from NACE or FROSIO inspection training to health and safety and product

knowledge. Ensuring that our employees have, amongst other things, the knowledge and expertise to:

• Help with coatings selection and specification based on the demands of the environment and the project timelines

The range also includes products suitable for use on insulated and uninsulated steel and for protection from ‘thermal shock’ or rapid temperature cycling.

Page 5: Coatings for coal, gas and oil fired power plants and ......plants and equipment. AkzoNobel’s International ® coatings range has a long history of protecting coal, gas and oil assets

There are a vast array of functions and processes in power stations which can potentially cause damage to steel and other surfaces through either dry abrasion and impact; or are permanently or semi-permanently immersed.

On a coal plant, the continuous movement of coal can cause significant abrasion damage and, if combined with rainfall or other moisture sources, corrosion can be an issue. This problem can be exacerbated further on a coastal plant whereby a highly saline environment can further speed up the process of corrosion.

Immersed or semi-permanently immersed areas such as pilings, water intakes and trash gates can be subjected to highly abrasive environments; sand, pebbles and other suspended objects in the water as well as impact from medium/large objects can cause significant damage to surfaces unless adequately protected.

To reduce the damage that abrasion can cause and inhibit corrosion, a product from the Interzone® range should be used. Interzone® 954 is designed to give long term protection from abrasion in both wet and dry areas and is ideal for use in thermal power plants for cooling water pipes for example.

Interzone® 1000 is a high build epoxy barrier coat which contains glass flake and gives fantastic protection in highly abrasive and corrosive environments. It also gives good chemical resistance and this combination of performance means it is ideal for fuel transportation conveyors.

Trusted anticorrosive protection

The starting block for protective coatings on any power plant is to maintain the integrity of the main structures.

By using a high performance anticorrosive system in new construction, you can prevent corrosion and extend the life to first major maintenance, leaving you free to concentrate on ensuring the coatings and linings in assets that are critical to operation, are maintained.

Areas such as the steam turbine building, boiler house and other buildings and assets usually operate in atmospheric or ambient conditions. We have been protecting steel from corrosion, abrasion and erosion for over 100 years, so our global core range has a long track record of

service in power plants as well as across a wide range of other industries.

The cornerstones of our anticorrosive systems are zinc rich primers (Interzinc®), high build epoxies (Intergard®) and polyurethane finishes (Interthane®). These are used together to build a three coat system. Compared to the use of epoxy primers or alkyd systems, the application of a high performance zinc based three coat system at new construction, and in line with ISO 12944 dft (dry film thickness) guidelines, can dramatically extend life to first major maintenance. Whether you require protection for your small and large equipment, boilers or structural steel, the International® product range, together with our in-field experience and track record delivers quality coating solutions that last.

Impact, abrasion and immersion

Page 6: Coatings for coal, gas and oil fired power plants and ......plants and equipment. AkzoNobel’s International ® coatings range has a long history of protecting coal, gas and oil assets

The majority of thermal power plants have environmental and discharge policies in place to ensure that any waste materials produced through power generation are as harmless as possible. One of the major systems in this process is the Flue Gas Desulphurisation (FGD) system. This area requires strong chemical, temperature and abrasion resistant coatings to prevent damage and corrosion of the steel or concrete.

The reduction in gas temperature of the unscrubbed gas results in sulphuric acid condensation in the gas stream, an extremely corrosive environment, and different variations of slurry used in the process can have vastly differing abrasive qualities; ensuring a range of products are required for your FGD.

Our Ceilcote® range of products were first applied in 1972 and some have been specifically designed for FGD units. The range covers all aspects of your FGD system including the gas-to-gas heater, absorbers, inlets, water and other storage tanks, sumps and trenches.

Maintaining water efficiency

The water cycles on a power plant can be the cause of many issues; from biofouling reducing efficiency to the corrosion of steel.

Regular maintenance and repair can be a very costly and time consuming exercise. An unexpected shutdown to remedy steel and coatings issues caused by water can be even more costly.

So, when considering the correct coatings for the water cycle on your power plant it is imperative to get it right first time.

Foul release coatings can help maintain efficiency. Our Intersleek® range is a patented fluoropolymer foul release technology which combines an ultra-smooth surface profile, preventing efficiency loss by surface friction, with exceptional fouling deterrence, meaning costly maintenance of coatings, including scraping of marine fouling is not required.

Thermal power plants require vast amounts of water, for cooling and for the boiler cycle for conversion to steam.
