read or write. Pictures and other visual aids were needed to communicate important ideas or identifying classes in society.

Knights especially depended on pictures to express their identity. Each picture had a specific meaning. When these pictures were combined, they created a “Coat of Arms” that was unique to that Knight

Shields were divided into sections to represent different characteristics and information pertaining to that Knight.
