Important dates to put on your calendar
May 16 - End of the year party at Sea Palms
President’s Message
This is the last Newsletter for the 2016-2017 Coasters’ Year and it has been an honor for me to serve as President this year. We ended the year with 306 vibrant, active members. Together we have had the opportunity to enjoy 3 parties (counting the upcoming End-of-Year party), 11 Special Events, a Happy Hour for new members, and all the monthly activities everyone enjoys.
I would like to thank the Board members that have been a wonderful group to work with this year:
Jim Kielt, Vice President – Membership, who diligently captured our memberinformation and dues and printed our Directory.
Donna Ainger, Vice President Special Events, who led the coordination efforts that provided us with 11 events to participate in.
Sandy Anderson, Secretary, who documented our Board meetings, sent cards to our members and helped along the way with anything she could.
Ljiljana Badre, Treasurer and Richard Applegate, Assistant Treasurer, who kept track of our finances and learned the intricacies of PayPal.
I would also like to thank all the members who volunteered their time leading our administrative duties, our monthly activities and coordinated special events and parties. These activities are the core of what keeps our members coming back year after year!
We just completed the last Special Event for this membership year! Twenty one members participated in a day trip to Lakeland, Georgia to tour the Georgia Olive Farm, visit Gayla’sGrits, have lunch at Ford Farm, tour the Lakeland Murals and have a tour and wine tasting at Horsecreek Winery. A special thank you to Don and Susan Myers for coordinating this wonderful event for us.
Our last and final get-together will be the End-of-Year party on May 16th at Sea Palms for an evening of dinner and dancing. Don’t forget to sign up by May 2nd for what promises to be a great party!
Next year’s dues can be paid on the Coasters website (ssicoasters.com) using PayPal, by sending your check to Ramsey Badre or by bringing your check to the End-of-Year Party.
April 2017 News Page 2
The dues will remain at $25 per person next year. The earlier you sign up, the better equipped the new Board will be to develop a budget and to determine how many Directories to print.
I hope everyone has a wonderful summer and we will see each other again in the Fall!
Myra Galbreath

Coasters DO Events!
It has been a busy year for our more active coasters! We’ve gone from land to sea, enjoyedcocktails in high style and walked through marshes, visited animal farms and olive farms, we’vefed buffalo and shot at bullseyes, and we’ve tasted delicious wines!
In all, 11 events have been scheduled since last September – and only one had to be rescheduleddue to weather concerns. Coasters number around 300 members, and we’ve been fortunate toaccommodate 268 on special events.
We appreciate everyone’s willingness to venture into cyberspace as we implemented Paypalregistration and payment transactions with resounding success.
My thanks and gratitude are extended to the following individuals who researched, sponsoredand coordinated events on your behalf:
Sharon Branca Barbara Browne Sarah Ellerbee
Fran Kielt Jennifer & Larry Kohlhoff Wendy McNair
JoAnn & Jerry Mooney Susan & Don Myers
It has been my pleasure to serve in this capacity, and I have really enjoyed meeting so manyfolks I didn’t know before. I’m excited about some of the ideas that are being floated for nextyear – and I’m sure you will be too!
Donna Ainger

Nineteen Coasters in Lakeland, Georgia.
Who knew the grits mill and the olive mill were NOT located at Shaw Farms’ center-of-town office? We were well launched by 10:30 (rather than 10) with a tour of Gayla's Grits followed by everything you wanted to know and more about Georgia Olive Farms. Vicki Hughes, a member of the Shaw family and Executive Director of the Georgia Olive Growers Association, was our guide for our time in Lakeland.
Our first stop on a trolley tour was Ford Farm for a lunch centered around their delicious friedchicken...and it lived up to itsbilling. Georgia State Representative Jason Shaw joined us for lunch and offered the blessing. He has served District 176 since 2010, following his father’s service in the same seat. Rep. Shaw serves as chairman of the Georgia Legislative Rural Caucus. (Georgia doesn’t get more rural than Atkinson, Lanier,
Lowndes and Ware counties.) After a tour of Ford Farm’s accommodations for quail hunters and their fellow travelers, it was back to Lakeland to drive by the murals that earn Lakeland the title “Georgia's Historic City of Murals.” There are more than two dozen murals in the downtown area depicting scenes of Milltown in 1925, the year the community was renamed Lakeland. The trolley tour included a windshield survey of Banks Lake National Wildlife Refuge and Nell Patten Roquemore's home and nearby cabin. The cabin is home to Georgia governors, UGA Presidents, and St. Simons restaurateur Dave Snyder when each visits Georgia Olive Farms.
The trolley returned the group to the olive farm to purchase olive oil, grits and notions. The caravan of cars ended their day at the tasting room of Horsecreek Winery in Nashville...arriving on time and without a wrong turn. Participants are now connoisseurs of wine slushies...$5 in a Styrofoam or plastic 16 ounce go cup. An offering of five house wines was enjoyed with cheese, crackers, and grapes. The trip back to St. Simons was an uneventful two and a half hour drive.
Inspiration for the day came from a Coasters cooking class hosted a year ago at Halyards. When next at Halyards or Tramici, please thank you Dave for the inspiration.

Great Decisions Great Decisions has completed its season after hosting discussion topics weekly during February and March. Each discussion leader performed very well and discussions were lively and well informed.
Our group resolved all major global issues at our meetings except world hunger! The traditional group party was held on the last meeting night to celebrate another successful year for Great Decisions.

Poker! We are meeting regularly on alternate Thursdays from 7-9 PM, we will play on during the summer!!
If you want to play, we still have room for players. It’s a play for fun game but there is a $10 chip fee to keep you interested and make it almost as exciting as a Las Vegas game. If you don't know how to play, come on and we will teach you.

CanastaThe Canasta card sharks continue to meet every second Monday of the month from 1 to 3 PM atBonefish Restaurant – who are gracious to make the room available to us at no charge.
We have been having four tables the last couple of months and there is room for more. We have noticed that some Coasters have signed up but so far have not joined us. Think about coming out! It is not too early also to think about whether we want to continue playing over the summermonths when the Coasters usually ‘rest up’ before the new season. Please let me hear from you.

Dining InThe Dining-In groups are winding down their dining events for the Coasters’ year. Those new to Dining-In have experienced pleasant surprises in their enjoyment of good food, comraderie, and making new friends.
Dining hosts have had fun in bringing some type of themeto their dining event. The Thorntons’ dinner was held on the birthday of George Washington, so dessert was accompanied with trivia challenges related to knowledge about the first president.
April 2017 News Page 8
Pictured above is the dining group that the Wrights hosted in March. Diners contributed disheswith a Greek theme. Everyone had a place card with their alternate Greek names: Jenesius, Larentheon, Mariopolis, Debasis, David, Karenina, Carrelian, Pamocrites, and Denato. It was an OPA! kind of night… Example of the fun trivia at the event: Name the cities in georgia names after Greek and/or Italian cities
Hosts President Harry S. Truman (aka Al Link) and First Lady Florence Harding (aka MarjorieGruber) hosted a special STATE DINNER on April 6 at the King & Prince Villas. Fortunately for the other Presidents and First Ladies attending they did not have to take any food dishes as President Andrew Jackson (aka Gary Link) assisted by President Truman served as Chefs and prepared a delicious State Dinner.
Famous quotes were given by the Presidents and First Ladies in attendance. First Lady Jane Pierce (aka Forrest Wilson) remembered remarking “As I was putting up the White House’s firstChristmas Tree, I said “Oh how I wish you, Franklin, were out of political life! How much better it would be for you on every account.”
First Lady Letitia Tyler (aka Sandy Storino ) said “In a letter to my husband, John, I wrote ‘Either if I float or sink in this stream of fortune, I shall never cease to love you and our 15 children”
President Herbert Hoover (aka Ronald Wilson) “I approved the Star Spangled Banner as our National Anthem.”
As always at State Dinners, a few questions were asked: Who was the first President to reside in the White House?
Who was the oldest person to become President? Who had the longest inaugural address? Conversation & food were great and all enjoyed another Coasters Dining In.
As in the past, Dining-In Chairs will be hosting an end-of-year potluck party. Look for more information soon.
