Coastal Photo Club News November 2013 1

President’s Message Greetings!

After only a couple of months as the president, I want to take a look back over the past year and highlight the significant things the club accomplished.

In November and December 2012 the club provided formal portraits to several nursing homes in the area, including The Howell Center. In short

order we will begin this endeavor once again. As we moved into the late spring, several members

visited the Wounded Warrior Battalion, East, at Camp LeJeune. We held some discussions with some recovering Marines and their wives and children. We were not able to give as much as we had hoped to but we did get to meet some of those who made such sacrifices and were able to share some photographic time with them.

In August club members met in Riverbend to photograph a 5K in support of the Howell Center.

Thanks to all the tremendous work Jeanne Julian has put into the Newsletter we were awarded First Place from PSA in the smaller club category.

Alan Welch and John Steady built a new Website which garnered an Honorable Mention from PSA in the smaller club category.

Club members were at Cherry Point to photograph the VMAQ-3 homecoming from the Middle East.

Club members participated in National Night Out in support of the local police department.

Members judged a photo contest sponsored by the New Bern Public Library.

In April club members joined in an outing to Hendersonville to photograph waterfalls in the mountains.

Club members photographed the Bike MS event. The club set up a tent for Pamlico Heritage Day in

Grantsboro and raised $150.00 for the nursing home project.

Working in concert with Beasley Broadcasting and Pinecone Perennials at Mum Fest, club members raised over $1,100 for the New Bern Food Bank with a “portrait booth” (see page 2).

This has been a banner year for accomplishments by this club. I am proud to be not only a member, but your current president and I thank each of you for your efforts.

Material for the December newsletter is due December 1.

The Coastal Photo Club lent time and talent to contribute to the success of two community events recently. At Mum Fest in New Bern, roving photographers documented the action for organizers and raised money for the regional food bank by operating a portrait booth (see page 2). At RiverFest in Bridgeton, CPC members shot photos for publicity purposes and promoted the club by staffing a booth at the event, which celebrates arts, crafts, and local culture. Meeting Report—October 2013 October 12, 2013

The regular meeting was replaced by hands-on

photography at Mum Fest, New Bern’s annual fall festival that fills the city’s streets with vendors, rides, food, and fun. CPC

members took photographs of attendees enjoying all of the

activities, both to practice candid “street photography” and to

make the images available to event organizers for future

publicity purposes.

In addition, for the first time this year, the club

collaborated on a project to benefit the Food Bank of Eastern

North Carolina. For a donation, Club members shot portraits

of Mum Fest attendees who posed in an artful seasonal setting.

Pinecone Perennials, a local nursery and garden shop, created

the rustic “set” with weathered fencing and autumnal plants.

The portraits were posted online for the subjects to download

and print or share.

Their donations added up: $1,107.61 was collected.

“That means 5,535 meals will be available to those in

need,” said Mary Esther Baker, Greenville Development

Officer with the ENC Food Bank. “Thank you once again for

all you and the club did to raise money for those in need of

food assistance in the coastal counties.” Janice Arthur, Chuck

Colucci, Jim Dugan, Mary O’Neill, Rosemary Osterhus, and

Susan Williams all participated in the effort, coordinated by

John Steady.

“I am overwhelmed with the joy this brought so many!

Young, older, silly friends, young love, long love—it was

obviously a great collaboration, and amazing photographers!”

said Jayne McGinn, marketing director for Pinecone

Perennials. You can see the fun, casual portraits of families and

friends who donated and posed at

Club Competition Update

CPC members are invited to participate in themed “mini competitions” at most meetings (other than scheduled major competitions in the fall and spring). You’ll find the guidelines for submitting prints to competitions at http://coastalphotoclub.com/ at “competition rules.”

The mini-comp “challenges” for 2013 incorporate a theme and a technique or style intended to enhance the subject.

There was no mini-comp in October. Watch for the results of the major fall competition in your December newsletter.

December Theme: still life; technique: using three props, such as a book, a cup, a clock, a flower, or a figurine.

RiverFest recognizes Evie Henderson At an awards ceremony at RiverFest in Bridgeton this year, Coastal Photo Club member Evie Chang Henderson won first place in 2D for her art work. Evie, who lives in Oriental, North Carolina, has exhibited her paintings regionally, nationally, and internationally—most notably, in Germany, Spain, Morocco, India, and Kenya.

Jim Dugan wraps up CPC project documenting historic cemetery “The Cedar Grove Photo Project for the Earl of Craven Questers has been completed and all of the information fit onto a 16Mb flash drive,” Jim Dugan reports. Members of the Coastal Photo Club photographed the historic part of the cemetery from about 275 vantage points as a “before” record of the cemetery. “Our photos will be used for restorations of the cemetery required by wear and tear or damage by storms or vandalism,” Jim explained. Jim met with Carolyn Startsman and two other Questers on October 24th. “We reviewed the photos and the way they were organized on the computer files. The Questers have talked to the library’s reference librarian and will be taking a copy of the files for research use at the library,” Jim said. He made a second drive to keep for club use if the CPC is called upon for an “after” series of photos. Jim thanked club members Janice Arthur, Joan Bower, Mike Carter, Judy Hills, Jeanne Julian, Rick Meyer, Rosemary Osterhus, Sam Roney, and Jim Starr for their participation.

Exhibit features photography by vintage cameras, “wet room” processing "Ebb & Flow," an art exhibition sponsored by the City of Raleigh Arts Commission, will be on display until November 15 at the Miriam Preston Block Art Gallery in the Avery C. Upchurch Government Complex, 222 W. Hargett St., Raleigh. The gallery is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. Monday through Friday except on holidays. The artists of "Ebb & Flow" present nature as a conduit to understanding the triumphs and complexities of human experience. Featured are mixed media drawings by Amy Friend, watercolors by Ginny Runge, photographs by Holden Richards, and jewelry and photographs by Pullen Arts Center instructors and students. Block2 Video Series will air Adam Graetz’s “Into the Woods” and “Gaze of Native Dreamers” in the Block Art Gallery. Ms. Friend uses traditional drawing techniques on large wood panes, with evocative bird imagery. Mr. Richards uses vintage cameras and traditional wet room processing to create photographs

that capture the vulnerability of North Carolina landscapes. Mrs. Runge's precisely rendered mandala watercolors transform the essence of botanical specimens into spiritual pathways.

Club Gallery European Tour

Castles and curiosities Helmut Treschan captured beautiful scenery in Germany and France in a three-week trip to Europe this fall. “My trip started in Bamberg, Germany, and from there we drove to Coburg, Kronach, Wurzburg, Nurnberg, and then to Gottingen. From there, we drove to Strasbourg (France), then through the Black Forest in Germany, back into France to Colmar, and then to Fuessen, Germany to see the castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau. We did a lot of traveling, but every mile was wonderful—and the pastries delicious!” Helmut said.
