Do you hold or have you applied for a TWIC?

TWIC Application

Transportation Workers Identification Credential

TWIC requirements have changed and can be found in Coast Guard Policy Letter 11-15. The requirement to HOLD a VALID TWIC is now tied to your employment on vessels that require a Vessel Security Plan. In order to renew your credential you must hold, have previously held or have been approved for a TWIC. Applicants should read the Policy Letter thoroughly to ensure compliance. All Merchant Mariners MUST complete an application (CG 719B) in order to renew their Merchant Mariner Credential. List on application all credentials presently held and submit copies of same.

USCG MMC User Fee Payment

Instructions for paying online are on our website. Checks, money orders and credit cards are accepted methods of payment – do not send cash. Checks or money orders must be payable to

the U.S. Coast Guard with the social security number printed on the front of the document.

We highly recommended that you use Pay.gov - Credit Card Payment Form in order to pay for your original credential. It is a fast, safe, and reliable method of payment.

Medical Exams are required!

In order to renew a Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) you must pass a physical exam. Have your

Doctor complete CG-719K or CG-719K/E.

Understanding our NVIC

Prior to getting your physical you should review the

Navigation and Inspection Information Circular (NVIC) 04-08. Your doctor must

Complete all sections of the 719K or 719K/E form.

•Did your doctor sign the form and put his/her license number?

•Is there any missing data for uncorrected vision (Section III)?

• Was your uncorrected vision tested with corrective lenses (Section III)?

•Is your pulse rate/rhythm (Section II) filled out?

•Are there response in the medication section (Section VI)?

•Are you missing field of vision (Section III)?

•Is your hearing marked as normal or impaired?

If you have any medical issues, have your doctor address them according to NVIC 04-08. Incomplete applications, missing signatures, or failure to address these medical issues will cause your application to be delayed, or even rejected. Please visit our website for more information.

Finding a “Collection Point” that meets Coast Guard requirements

You must provide the results of your drug test from an approved lab or evidence of being

subject to a random drug testing program that meets the requirements of 46 CFR 16.230 with your application. The drug test must be dated within 6 months of your application and be

signed by a certified Medical Review Officer (MRO).

Only DOT 5 Panel drug test from a certified lab will be accepted (SAMHSA 5 Panel).

Documenting your Sea Service is extremely important!

360 days of service during the past 5 years, OR Pass a comprehensive, open-book exam, OR Complete an approved refresher course, OR 3 yrs employment in a position closely related to the operation, construction, or repair of vessels (either deck or engineer as appropriate),

a) Deck must pass open- book Rules of the Road b) Engineers (who hold Life-boatman must pass open-book exam)

Documenting your Sea Service is extremely important! In addition to the requirements of the previous slide, you must also provide the following: MASTER or MATE (PILOT) of TOWING Completion of one of the above requirements, AND Completion of practical demonstration before a designated examiner, OR Submit proof of ongoing participation in training and drills.

In addition to the requirements listed on slide #10 you must provide the following: RADIO OFFICERS

Present a currently valid license as 1st or 2nd class radiotelegraph operator issued by the FCC. 46 CFR 10.231

360 days of seagoing service, performing functions appropriate to the certificate held, (inland service may be used on certain inspected vessels subject by regulation to conduct regular training and drills involving the four elements of BST with Command Approval) OR Successfully completing and approved course or courses
