COAL BLOODED•COAL BLOODED describes the decline of coal, in the

U.S., and highlights U.S. utilities which are investing billions into natural gas and renewable energy sources.•COAL BLOODED will be available, for free, on Amazon,

from May 5, through May 9. Afterwards, COAL BLOODED will be available on Amazon, for 99 cents•Developed by Vincent J. Lentini

The 5 Largest Coal Consumers Globally•China•United States• India•Russia• Japan

Page 5: COAL BLOODED POWERPOINT

The Decline In Coal Has Been Caused By Several Factors, Some Of Which Include:• The low price of natural gas driven by the Shale Gas

Revolution• Tougher environmental regulations targeting pollution

and carbon emissions• Increased proliferation of cleaner renewable energy

sources

India Coal Demand• In 2015, India’s annual coal demand exceeded 750 million tons• India will be constructing the largest number of coal plants of all

Asian/Pacific nations• By 2020, India plans to produce 1.5 billion tons of coal, annually• The country plans to invest $100 billion into renewable energy

sources, including wind power projects and solar parks• India will continue to become more reliant on coal, as it

continues to expand electricity generation for its massive population

The Mercury & Air Toxins Standard Act• Was passed in December 2011, to protect families from harmful

power plant mercury emissions and toxic air pollutants• Some of the toxic air pollutants, include: arsenic, cyanide, nickel,

selenium, acid gas• Mercury has harmful impacts upon the human body, including:

impairing thinking, learning, and can harm the nervous system of children exposed in the womb• The other pollutants can cause, asthma, cancer, heart disease,

and premature death

Southern Company• Southern Company has significantly reduced its coal generating

capacity, over the last 10 years.• In 2004, coal generated 78 percent of the company’s total electricity

generating capacity. In 2015, coal generates less than 40 percent of the company’s total electricity generation.• Over the same period natural gas generation has increased from only

4 percent of total electricity generation, and has increased to over 40 percent, of total power generation.• At the end of 2015, Southern Company had a total of 1,800

megawatts, (MW), of renewable energy capacity
