NEWS WATCH MILK SUPPLY AND PRICE The milk supply for March amounted to 9,784,687 litres, which was a 1% increase on March 2019. The Barryoe variable milk price remains the same as last month, other than the seasonal adjustment in the SCC bonus from 0.88c to 0.5c per litre. Negative market conditions resulted in a 1.5c/L drop in the Carbery base price but this was offset by an increased contribution from the stability fund of 1.5c/L and Barryroe’s variable milk price now stands at 33.29c/L at 3.6% butterfat and 3.3% protein including VAT and SCC bonus. Our average constituents for March were: 4.23% butterfat and 3.26% protein and our average variable milk price for the month is 35.27c/L. The equivalent prices in the fixed milk price schemes are 34.64c/L and 34.34c/L for schemes 4 and 5 respectively. AREA AID APPLICATIONS The closing date for Basic Payment Scheme applications is Friday 15th May 2020. Make sure you prioritise as mistakes mean reduced payments and/or significant delays in payments. Grass Farmer Profile - Teddy Cullinane, Kilmalooda, Ballinascarthy. After a slow start to the year growth has really taken off in the last 10 days. I started the second round on 10th April when the first few paddocks had covers of 1,200kgDM/ha. My target pre-grazing yield is 1,450kgDM/ha. Silage ground was never grazed due to the poor Spring conditions and the target now is to have 1st Cut ready for May 15th. Stocking Rate is currently set at 4LU/ha with 3kg meal being fed depending on growth rate. Cows are currently averaging 29.5 litres or 2.1kgMS. My Butterfat is well back on the last 2 years but my protein has held well. As the grass is very lush at present, I’m not worried just yet. I’m currently feeding Barryroe’s 13% Summer Dairy nut in the parlour which is more than enough as grass protein is >20%. Grass Decisions for week ahead. My main focus will be going into the right grass covers as this will dictate the residual cows leave behind. My target is to have no more than 10 days grass ahead or a cover/LU of 180. If growth rates are more than 70kgDM/ha I will pull meal back and look to take quality surplus bales for the Autumn. The Covid-19 pandemic has affected all our lives and is likely to continue for some time to come. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our suppliers, customers, shareholders and all the Co-op staff for their commitment and understanding during these unprecedented times. It is critical that the food chain remains in operation at all times and I am proud of how Barryroe Co-op and all those associated with the Co-op have conducted themselves during this crisis. I ask you all to please continue to observe all HSE recommendations for as long as they last and pay particular attention to observing the social distancing protocols with Co-op staff including drivers so that we can operate and maintain all Co-op services. BREEDING SEASON 2020Mark dates in your diary and have an action plan at each date. This will maximise the number of matings each cow will get.

1st May 2020 breeding is 8th February 2021 calving

Pre breedingIf you have been heat detecting pre-breeding get the cows not yet shown heat calved 35 days checked by your vet. Otherwise put forward the cows that have had milk fever, retained afterbirths, severe mastitis, digestive issues and those with discharges to be checked by your vet. First 3 weeks of the season1. Tail paint all cows twice a week in normal weather

e.g. Monday and Thursday. In wet weather you will need to increase this. Clipping the hair on the rump allows the tail paint to be removed easier during mounting.

Normal Weather

Wet Weather

2. Herd size will determine the level of mounting and

the ease of heat detection

• 4-5 cows on heat/day each cow has 50 mounts tail paint and reading at both milking’s

• 2-3 cows on heat/day each cow has 25 mounts tail paint and reading at both milking’s with a heat check last thing each night

3. Targets

• 30% of your cows bred at end of week 1 the 20th April-26th April,

• 60% of your cows bred at end of week 2 the 27th April to 3rd May

• 90% of your cows bred at the end of week 3 the 4th May-10th May

Act immediately if not meeting these targets as early intervention is the Key. At the end of the 3 weeks all cows calved 30 days not bred need to be examined by your vet. This will give those cows an opportunity to have 3 matings before the season ends. Second 3 weeks of the breeding seasonThis is the 3 weeks where the game is won or lost. Heat mounting activity is halved. Therefore heat detection has to be doubled in intensity compared to the first three weeks. How do I increase my heat detection intensity?

• Get a vasectomised Bull fit him with a chin ball -A male will always increase sexual activity!

• Top up tail paint 2-3 times a week-avoid any lapses.• Put on scratch cards.• Check cows last thing at night in the field and be

more vigilant at the morning milking.• Synchronization and fixed timed AI for those calved

30 days not shown heat. Maintain Energy IntakesCowsIt is crucial to maintain energy intakes during the breeding season and to match input with output. In inclement weather when intakes are reduced or when grass is in short supply it is prudent to supplement in the breeding season. HeifersIt has been demonstrated that a short-term (two-week) reduction in energy intake during or after AI severely reduces embryo survival rate in heifers; and clearly maintaining dry matter intakes during the early pregnancy period by avoiding sudden grass shortages is critical in achieving a high pregnancy rate. Heat Detection AidsApart from tail paint, scratch cards and the vasectomised bull are excellent, and in most farms all 3 can be used.

MINIMISING MILK FAT DEPRESSION IN COWS AT GRASSMilk fat depression (low milk fat %) has become increasingly common in recent years particular in the April to June period. While there is a genetic element to the issue (high fat % EBI cows will have less issues), and a dilution effect as spring calving cows approach milk yield, the principle cause is nutritional. Spring grass contains lots of unsaturated fatty acids which depress milk fat production. The reason it has become increasingly problematic in recent times is that the modern dairy cow eats more grass than in the past and modern grass varieties contain more fat (and therefore more unsaturated fatty acids) e.g.

Old cow + old grass 12Kg/day grass @3% fat = 360g/day fat from grass

New cow + new grass 15Kg/day grass @6% fat = 900g/day fat from grass (2.5X more fat!)

Fast passage of feed through the cow (lack of functional fibre in the diet) and feeding high starch diet supplements will make the problem worse.

Practical steps to minimise milk fat % drop:

• From the second rotation until June, avoid going into very low grass covers (<1,200Kg DM/ha). Increase pre-grazing covers to 1,400Kg+ if milk fat continues to drop.

• Graze paddocks out fully (force cows to eat stem as well as leaf ) by using strip grazing etc.

• From the second rotation until June, where practical, follow the cows rather than

blanket spread N fertiliser (high N grass is high in oil)• Consider feeding a high functional fibre buffer at grass e.g. a TMR

containing straw or high fibre grass silage• Avoid feeding high levels of feeds containing a lot of oil e.g. brewers

and distillers grains• Avoid feeding high levels of fast fermenting grains (particularly wheat

and to a lesser extent barley)• Ensure cows are in good condition. Low Body Condition Score (BCS)

cows (<2.5) tend to have lower milk fat %.• Consider feeding a good quality butterfat booster e.g. Mag12 Butterfat

Booster

Mag12 Butterfat BoosterMag12 Butterfat Booster is a combination of a buffer and soluble magnesium. It has been proven in trials to significantly increase rumen pH (buffering effect) and butterfat % when fed at 100g per cow per day. It has also been proven to have a positive effect on milk protein %. Note it is easier to maintain butterfat % than to recover from a large drop, therefore it is recommended to follow the above steps and include Mag12 Butterfat Booster before milk fat drops.

Mag12 Butterfat Booster is now available in our Dairy Elite 16% or 13% Summer Dairy cubes on special order (orders need to be placed a minimum of 2 full working days before required). It costs €1/Kg or €0.10 per cow per day.

RESEEDING SPRING 2020With cash tight on many farms, there may be a temptation to put off reseeding. However this decision may cost you money as reseeding is one of the best short to medium term investments you can make on your farm.

Why Reseed?1. Grow more Grass

Research in Teagasc Moorepark has shown that your old permanent pasture typically produces 3 tonne/ha less than 100% PRG. The main difference is in spring (before mid-May), when it is most needed. Swards with a low content of Perennial Ryegrass (PRG) are reducing your profit by €300/ha (€120/acre) due to reduced dry matter (DM) production alone.

2. Improved Grass Quality (DMD)Low PRG swards are of lower quality (DMD) compared to new reseeds. Combined with correct grassland management new reseeds will deliver higher grass DMD during the grazing season with trials delivering 8% higher milk output per hectare compared to old permanent pasture.

3. Improved Fertiliser ResponseOld permanent pasture is inefficient i.e. you are losing 25% of the response to your Nitrogen fertiliser applications. On top of this, your old pastures have reduced digestibility and intake potential.

Why reseeding in the spring is recommended• Reseeding in spring is much more reliable with a wider window

for sowing and post emergence herbicide sprays (vital for dock control) plus improved clover establishment.

• The time that a sward is out of production can be limited to two to three months. Trials from Moorepark clearly show that even when a sward is out of production for this length of time, their annual DM production can be similar or even greater than old permanent pasture accessible for the entire year.

Reseeding Best PracticeTo ensure successful establishment the following reseeding best practise guide is strongly recommended.

1. Take a representative soil sample and send for analysis. If ploughing, wait until after ploughing to soil sample

2. Spray off the old pasture with 6L per ha (4.25 pts/Ac) Glyphosate e.g. Gallup. Allow 7 - 10 days after spraying before cultivating.

3. Prepare a fine, firm seedbed and apply Lime, Phosphate and Potash as per soil test results.

4. Select the most suitable Barryroe grass seed mixture for your

situation i.e. the very best varieties available (N.B.) as this mixture is likely to be in the ground for 10 years or more.

5. Sow 10 bags of grass seed for every nine acres to be sown in good conditions. Increase the seed rate in poor conditions.

6. Ideally cover seeds and roll well to ensure good contact between the seed and the soil.

7. Apply 60 Kg/ha (48 units/Ac) of nitrogen at or after sowing.8. Monitor closely for pest attack and take action where necessary.

Slugs, Leatherjackets, Frit Fly and Rabbits are the main threat.9. Post emergence weed control is essential particularly to

control docks and thistles. Normally apply herbicide five-six weeks after sowing. Where clover is important use Legumex DB as it is safe on clover.

10. Regular light grazings when conditions are good are recommended to encourage the development of the new sward while avoiding poaching.
