Success Story!
When Avraj was in Year 11 at Priesthorpe he was predicted very good grades and therefore tempted to stay in 6th Form for A levels. When he met with Chris the Careers Adviser he said that he enjoyed cooking at home and really wanted to work with food. He applied to Bradford College for a practical Catering course and became the best student. His first job at The Box Tree in Ilkley gave him confidence and unlocked his skills. He worked very hard and showed such flair they suggested he put himself forward for the TV competition - Masterchef, the Professionals. He was very successful and appeared on TV in November 2019!
Science and Nature There are some really cool apps available for people who want to learn more about the environment.With PlantSnap you can identify over 600,000 plants by taking a photo - and it’s free.ChirpOMatic can record birdsong and identify the bird - and you can use it offline! It costs £3.99.The free ISS Detector helps you track the International Space Station and can tell you when you would be able to see it - taking the weather into consideration - Amazing!
School Lunches
Did you know that school meals began here in Yorkshire? Love them or loathe them, we all take school dinners for granted these days but things would have been very different before a campaign that started in Bradford on October 28th 1907. The first school meals consisted of scotch broth, fruit tart, bread and a mug of water for each child. Fortunately, things have moved on a fair bit since then! What’s your favourite food at lunchtime?
Avi’s talent got him through many stages on Masterchef and because he did so well he was offered other jobs. Avi now works in the Gilpin Lodge hotel restaurant in the Lake District with top chef Hrishikesh Desai. Here he is with some of his Masterchef winning dishes! Congratulations Avi!

How’s your health?
Your health is so important and while this pandemic is going on you’ll be doing what you can to keep fit and active. What about your mind? How is your mental health doing? Most of us are suffering from anxiety over the risk of Covid-19 Firstly, talking to someone you know often helps. You could contact your coach or other staff member to arrange a talk. It’s crucial to learn how to manage and maintain good wellbeing. Check out the ‘Think Ninja’ app which has been designed to bring self-help knowledge and skills to young people (10-18 year old) who may be experiencing increased anxiety and stress during the crisis.

Every year there are more junior jobs under the Business and Retail categories than any other career areas. Whether you want to have contact with customers or work behind the scenes there are apprenticeships being offered and some will lead to Management! From Dentists and Opticians to Surveyors and Engineers, all businesses need someone to answer the phone/emails, speak to customers and learn the business. Once you’ve shown your enthusiasm and capabilities you may get other work and move up in the company - that creates a gap for another junior!See START or the National Careers Service for information on these jobs and read this example…….
