Being part of Rugby’s thriving community is exciting, inclusive and full of possibilities. Our teachers are as keen to devise fascinating clubs and activities to engage and feed inquiring minds as the pupils are to sign up for them. A good co-curricular programme is not about simply filling ‘spare’ time or bolt-ons to existing subjects, but more about creating enriching experiences that ignite a spark, lead to another question or nurture a quiet confidence.

It’s the chance to try something new, to challenge body and mind, to follow the ‘what-if’, to try, perhaps to decide it’s not for you, but to be encouraged to explore another path.

There are always many options here and the doors are open to as much as any pupil may like to fit in. The energy is inspiring, the approach inclusive and the emphasis is on enjoying life, because at Rugby, the whole person is the whole point.

This brochure is packed with our latest co-curricular programme activities.

CCFThe Combined Cadet Force at Rugby School was one of the first to be formed in 1860 and to this day plays an important part in the life of the School. Cadets have a wide variety of choice: Army (Fusilier), Parachute Regiment, Royal Marines, RAF, Corps of Drums and Catering Corps making Rugby School one of the most diverse CCFs in the country.

With a formal parade and training each Wednesday afternoon, there is also a two-night field weekend

and an activity day each year when cadets can put all they have learned into practice in unfamiliar terrain. There is also an Annual Inspection Parade in May. Cadets make good use of the School’s extensive grounds for weekly training, but some activities take place off site such as flying, shooting, climbing, kayaking and skiing.

While the CCF is run along military lines, it is not a precursor to military service or seen as a

promotional organisation for the armed forces. The aim is to provide an environment where pupils can focus on, acquire and develop leadership skills, team-working capabilities and camaraderie through discipline, service and adventurous activities. All pupils take part in CCF in the E-Block and a good number of cadets stay for four years.

Various days and times.

G.O.A.L. stands for Get Outside and Learn and is an activity on offer to all members of the F-Block and some members of the D-Block during Wednesday afternoon activities.

G.O.A.L. takes place every week and gives pupils the opportunity to get involved in a wide range of activities in the outdoors, including biking, kayaking, walking, bush craft and conservation. Each activity last approximately two hours, and while some involve an off-campus trip, most are carried out in and around the School grounds.

One of the major projects we are involved in as a school is a conservation project with

Warwickshire Wildlife Trust. Every Wednesday afternoon a group of D-Block pupils spend a couple of hours working with Trust volunteers to clear areas of the Ashlawn Cutting Nature Reserve and create better habitats for butterflies, bees and small mammals as well as a more pleasant environment for dog walkers, runners and cyclists.

Other activities for the D-Block will include navigation using only nature’s signs, back-country cooking, team-building activities, kite making and flying and country walking. Activities are designed to teach new skills or develop existing ones or simply to have fun with friends in the open air. There are sometimes opportunities to work towards

nationally recognised awards in such activities as kayaking or climbing which will lay the foundation for possible future training.

G.O.A.L. takes place alongside other F-Block activities and offers a chance to learn skills which relate to future activities such as completion of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme or the John Muir Award. Camp craft, navigation and environmental awareness will be the key elements on Wednesday afternoons, giving pupils an insight into the skills needed in future years when tackling expeditions and activities either here at Rugby School or beyond.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme is the world’s leading youth achievement award giving millions of young people the opportunity to be the best they can be. A perfect fit at Rugby School, it boosts self-confidence, self-reliance and adaptability. The scheme’s three levels: Bronze, Silver and Gold is each made up of four sections - volunteering, skill, physical and expeditions, while the Gold level participants are also required to complete

the residential section. Each level offers individuals an opportunity to push themselves, gain new skills, enhance their aptitude and make new friends. The scheme is highly regarded at School and also by universities and future employers.

The Bronze level begins in E-Block progressing to Silver the following year and the highly regarded Gold Award in the Upper School. While we closely support

pupils through each level, it is very much their own personal responsibility to ensure they carefully choose their activities, satisfy the section requirements at each level and arrange for assessments in order to complete the award.

Enrolment details and dates are outlined to parents and pupils by the various Scheme leaders throughout the year.

Rugby School’s sporting philosophy is to maximise opportunities for all pupils. It aims to give each pupil the chance, at some stage during their time here, to represent the School in competition by equipping them with the necessary skills to give them the confidence to do so. The programme is very much about teaching boys and girls about sport for life.

Our Sports Centre and its grounds offer fantastic facilities featuring purpose-built hockey astro pitches, netball and tennis courts. The sports hall hosts multi-sport activities including badminton, volleyball, basketball, indoor hockey and cricket, there are three squash courts, a new modern fitness suite and Fives courts.

The 25m indoor swimming pool is used for competitive swimming and water polo, and in addition to this, we have the Collingwood Centre new sports hall, equipped for indoor netball, cricket and basketball. This is also attached to the Sports Science department where academic physical education is taught.
