Capture Club
Day and Time: Thursday 1.05pm – 1.35pm
Contact: Mrs D Goodman
At Capture Club the budding photographer can capture eye-catching videos or photographs using digital
cameras, learn to edit what has been captured in iPhoto, iMovie and Photoshop, They can create and publish
slideshows and videos, become trained as official photographers and capture events that happen at school
such as the Music & Drama Competition and Swimming Carnival. Students also create audio visual
presentations of school events to show on assembly as well as creating or improving their own movies and
photographs based on what they want to learn.
Choral8
Day and Time: Wednesday 1.05pm – 1.35pm

Choral8 is a performance vocal group consisting of 8 members, singing a capella in four part harmony. This
group is created for performances and events as a representative group and is selected from committed and
passionate members of the choir. The membership of this group is changeable depending on the repertoire
and the proposed event.
Ceramic Club
Day and Time: Monday 1.05pm 1.35pm

Ceramics Club is held weekly on Mondays at lunch-time for interested students from Years 7 - 9. Students
explore many different ceramics techniques including hand building, glazing and ceramic painting.
Participants are also encouraged to foster their own sense of self, developing confidence through the
exploration of the creative process. This is a very hands-on workshop where the students can develop their
creativity and design skills within a small group.
Dance6

TIGS Dance Companies and Ensembles aim to foster the development of dance students, and provide
performance opportunities that showcase excellence in this art form. The ensemble program also offers
opportunities to students who are simply interested in dance and performance and wish to build on their
skill and experience. TIGS Companies and Ensembles play a role in high profile events held throughout the
school year as well as participate and compete in eisteddfods and events in the wider community.
Dramatix

Dramatix is a co-curricular activity for all students, 7 - 12, whether they are drama enthusiasts or not. Throughout
the course of the year members of the club will work on finding and enhancing their vocal, physical and
mental skills for performance. The skills developed are inter-disciplinary in nature, enhancing confidence in
creative writing, presentations, Leadership and teamwork. Most importantly Dramatix is exciting and fun,
allowing students to channel their energy and creativity in a positive way, whilst mixing with their peers and
forming new friendships.
Guitar Ensemble
Day and Time: Tuesday 1.05pm – 1.35pm

Guitar Ensemble rehearses weekly, focusing on improving ensemble and performance skills for guitar players
from Years 7 - 10. Bassists and drummers are also welcome at this ensemble. There are opportunities for
performance in Lunchtime Concerts on the Library Lawn. This ensemble is mentored by an experienced
industry professional who tailors much of the repertoire to suit the needs of the students.
Jazz Band
Day and Time: Tuesday 8.00am – 8.40am

Students in the Jazz Band have the opportunity to develop their skills in improvisation. With a repertoire that
includes funk and jazz standards, this ensemble is always a hit at school events and when representing the
school at private and public performances and festivals.
Production

TIGS Annual Production is the highlight of the Arts year. Staged at the end of Term 2, it is open to all students
from Years 7 - 11. Productions are all inclusive and are a great opportunity for students to become involved in
all aspects of mounting a production from the orchestra, cast and crew to front of house, set design, technical
team, make up and costume design. Recent musicals have included Les Miserables, Cats, West Side Story, The
Boyfriend, Footloose, Oliver and The Secret Garden.
Senior Art Workshop

The Senior Art Workshop is an opportunity for students in Years 11 and 12 to receive individual specialist help
with their practical projects as well as participate in a range of practical workshops which include Etching,
Painting, Photoshop, Studio Photography, Ceramics, Sculpture and Drawing.
Senior Choir

Senior Choir is a non-selective ensemble that allows students from the Senior School to develop and enhance
their vocal skills. Working in four-part harmony, the choir allows for students to find their own voice, whilst also
developing their musicianship skills in listening, reading music and performance. Senior choir explores a variety
of repertoire to suite all voice levels and student taste. Performance opportunities such as School Events,
Wollongong eisteddfod and The Christmas Celebration enhance the group’s confidence whilst also building
strong friendships within the ensemble. I recommend senior choir for any students who enjoy singing and hope
to meet new friends of all ages.
Senior Orchestra

The Orchestra is comprised of woodwind, brass, percussion and string players of all ages and abilities across the
senior school. In the first semester this ensemble forms the Production Orchestra and in second semester builds
repertoire with a view to School performances such as Carols, Presentation Day and Year 12 Graduation. The
Orchestra has also toured internationally and participates in skills development days with professional
musicians.
Senior Strings

Senior Strings is an Ensemble for students in Years 7 - 12 open to any student who has private lessons in Violin,
Viola, Cello or Double Bass. This is a large ensemble catering for students of different abilities. Our repertoire is
diverse, covering a wide range of genres from Baroque and Classical to Tangos and arrangements of Popular
and Film pieces. With lots of performance opportunities we encourage any string players to join the Senior
Strings!
Wind Ensemble

Wind Ensemble is a band for woodwind, brass and rhythm players from Years 7 - 11. It is a supportive learning
environment for both experienced and developing players where selected repertoire is fun and varied. This
ensemble performs throughout the year at school and public events.
SPORT TERM I and IV
The TIGS Co-curricular Sport program offers a great range of activities for student participation and enjoyment.
A Summer Sport program is offered in Terms I and IV and a Winter program is offered in Terms II and III. The
Summer options are listed below however the Winter program options are at present being developed. Some
of the activities we are envisaging to offer in Winter include Rowing, Spin classes, Rockclimbing, Basketball,
Boot Camp training, Netball and Rugby just to name a few. The school utilizes numerous local facilities to
support this program and students are transported to and from the venues with school buses.
The school also offers training in a variety of sports during the year in preparation for Gala Day competitions
and representative opportunities.
TIGS have developed a Talented Athlete program in Athletics and Football which students are invited to
attend.

ASX Game

This is a simulation game where student’s trade live on the Australian Stock Exchange, putting themselves
against other students from around Australia. Students will develop an understanding of the market and the
risks involved, while encouraging them to research and collaborate in making decisions.
Brain Bee Challenge

The Australia-New Zealand Brain Bee Challenge (ABBC) is a competition for students in year 10, based on a
booklet published by the British Neuroscience Association. Students learn what the brain does, how it functions
and how important it is to everything we do and who we are as human beings. This knowledge helps to
provide self-esteem, dispels misconceptions about neurological and mental illnesses, and explains the
importance of enhancing your brain’s potential through learning, exercise and avoidance of illicit drugs.
Careers Club

This club provides an opportunity for students to attend work preparation workshops eg resume writing and
interview techniques. Students may book individual and group career counselling sessions. Guest speakers can
be arranged at student request at lunch time or after school.
Chapel Band

Students who play an instrument or sing are invited to be part of the Chapel Band which play at our weekly
Chapels.
Chess

The Illawarra Grammar School has run a thriving Chess Club for over 20 years. The club is designed for players of
all abilities. It is a friendly atmosphere where students can learn to play chess and play against other students.
For the more serious, there is an opportunity to be selected for the school team and play in the following
competitions: The Illawarra Schools Competition and The NSW Junior Chess League’s Country Secondary
Schools Competition.
Chinese and Japanese Painting

Chinese and Japanese painting provides students the opportunity to experience traditional Chinese and
Japanese bush painting and brush writing.
Christian Group Fish

There are three voluntary lunchtime groups for Christian fellowship at TIGS: ‘Lifesavers' for Years 5-6; ‘Fish' for
Years 7-9 and ‘Xplore' for Years 10-12. While these groups are open to all students, they are of particular interest
to those who have a Christian faith or would like to explore the Christian faith in a friendly and safe
environment. There is some time at each meeting given to reading the Bible, discussing topics of interest,
praying, and developing friendships over food and friendly discussion. Occasionally we work together on a
project which enhances the life of the School or broader community.
Community Service

In Year 11 students offer their services to the community in a special program run outside normal School hours.
We have a range of partners which provide service opportunities for our students. These partners include The
Disability Trust, The Smith Family, Figtree Anglican Church and SCARF. Students commit to a block of service
where they can develop relationships with those less fortunate than themselves. In this way our students learn
to model the love of Jesus and bring the blessing of Jesus to those with special needs. Needless to say, our
students are greatly blessed themselves as they serve in this way.
Da Vinci Decathlon

Da Vinci Decathlon is a team based interschool problem solving competition for gifted students across all
disciplines. The competition takes place at Knox Grammar School, against other private schools across the
state. Students are selected for this competition through a process of staff nomination. Da Vinci problems
require very explicit higher order thinking ability and intensive teamwork. Training for the event begins at the
start Term 2 and the competition is held in May each year.
Debating

Debating workshops are held twice each term for interested students. These workshops equip students with the
skills necessary for competitive debating. Some participants in these workshops are selected for inter-school
debates throughout the year.
Disability Trust Disco

The Disability Trust Disco is a feature of the Community Service calendar, with TIGS hosting a disco for Disability
Trust clients once a term. Year 11 students are involved in setting up, organising the music and lighting and
making sure that the Trust clients have a fantastic time at this social event.

In association with the Disability Trust, our Year 11 students help facilitate touch football training afternoons at
North Wollongong PCYC. The experience they gain from helping kids with a disability is invaluable and
rewarding. This enables them to develop their empathy skills and their role in the wider community.
English Help in Library

Future Problem Solving involves teams of four responding to scenarios on various topical issues such as the
environment. Based on research and imagination, they find creative solutions to problems like global warming
or child labour. Community Problem Solving is the practical arm of the programme. Individuals or small groups
identify a problem in their locality such as bullying, coeliac awareness or surf safety and devise a project which
addresses the issue. They connect with their community to explore different approaches to solving the problem
like running workshops or hosting afternoon teas for Harmony Day. Both FPS and CmPS are part of International
Competitions.
French Club

The French club offers the viewing of French films and the preparation and sampling of French food so that
students can have authentic French experiences at school. They also practise their language skills in a
supportive atmosphere with students who are fellow Francophiles, even if they are in different years.
GateWay8

GateWAY8 is also a team based interschool problem solving competition, hosted by Macarthur Anglican
College each year. It is run in the same way as the Da Vinci Decathlon
Honours Program

The Honours Program is open to all students entering Years 7 and 8. The program provides students with an
opportunity to pursue an area of personal academic, creative or social interest at a level of depth and
breadth not otherwise offered in the mainstream curriculum. It also encourages and acknowledges
contributions to Community Service and Co-Curricular activities.

This is to help individual students with their research on their projects and assignments. We will focus on the
following: Using Key words to define what their topic is about, locating resources, selecting information (Is the
information relevant, accurate, and unbiased?), organising and presenting information, referencing.

Mandarin Club

The Mandarin Club has been established to help build an understanding of Chinese Australian relationships
both within a school and community context as well as a more global contest. We will look at identities and
relationships; personal and cultural issues as well as globalisation and development. The Mandarin Club has
been specifically set up for students with a Chinese heritage and learners and speakers of Mandarin within the
school. It is however; open to all students who have an interest in Chinese and Australian relationships.

Mathematical Olympiad

The Year 7 and 8 Mathematical Olympiad introduces students to mathematical concepts and strategies which
develop their flexibility regarding problem solving. It encourages creativity, ingenuity and intuition, with the aim
of fostering an enthusiasm for and an enjoyment of mathematics. The Mathematical Olympiad also results in
students experiencing a sense of satisfaction, thrill and joy at having met mathematical challenges.
Mock Trial/Mooting

Mock Trial is an interschool competition organized by the NSW Law Society. The team has a Solicitor, two
Barristers, two Witnesses and various Court Officials. Every 3 weeks the team receives a case and then prepare
to represent their client. Students learn valuable skills including: group/team work, analysis of challenging legal
situations, application of legal precedents, presentation of clear logical arguments, thinking ‘on their feet’,
court room etiquette. Participation is by application for Year 11 students.
Bond Mooting Bond University’s hold an annual High School Mooting Competition. The competition is aimed
towards students who want to: be challenged by preparing, articulating and defending legal arguments
experience live courtroom environments, apply legal rules to real-life cases, mount legal arguments before one
or more judges
In teams of three, students will prepare a ‘moot’ which is a presentation of a legal argument by opposing
teams before one or more judges – a simulation of a barrister’s appearance in a real court. Contestants are
asked to apply legal rules to fact situations, and are judged on their advocacy skills along with their ability to
understand and argue the legal problem.
Participation is by selection form the Mock Trial Team and is open to Year 12 students.
MUNA/Evatt Trophy

Model United Nations simulates the workings of a United Nations Assembly. It challenges young people to
respect differences of race, religion and nationalism. Students are presented with ‘resolutions’ true to real life
and take the political stance of a given country on those issues. They then enact a United Nations Assembly.
There are two major competitions each year commencing in May. The Rotary club organise a one day event
hosted at the Nan Tien Temple and UN Youth NSW organises The Evatt Trophy which has regional, State and
National events.
Naganambala Activities

Nganambala is a remote Aboriginal community in the Northern Territory, approximately 400 km South-West of
Darwin. Eight years ago, Year 12 chose to raise funds to support the new school at Nganambala. Out of this
developed a relationship between our School and the Nganambala community, which continues to grow and
develop through on-going fundraising and return visits. This is an enormously valuable life-experience for those
who go, as well as an opportunity to engage with and contribute to the lives of children from a different
cultural background.
Public Speaking

Public Speaking workshops are held once a term for interested students. These workshops equip students with
the skills necessary for public speaking in a range of contexts. Participants are encouraged to try out for
selection for public speaking competitions throughout the year. Some of these include Rostrum Voice of Youth,
Un Youth Voice, Quota Student of the Year and Lions Youth of the Year.
SCARF Homework

The SCARF Homework help program is a collaborative project between SCARF and The Illawarra Grammar
School. SCARF is a local organisation that is dedicated to assisting refugee families in the Illawarra region. Year
11 students are involved in working with primary school aged refugee students from Wollongong West Primary
School on Monday afternoons in the TIGS library. This program offers much needed assistance to these
students in helping them with their homework and language skills and at the same time offers TIGS students the
opportunity to actively assist disadvantaged students in the community.
Science Olympiad

The Australian Science Olympiad Competition is the training and selection process for top performing
secondary science students which culminates in the International Science Olympiads – the Olympic Games for
science students.
To earn a spot representing Australia at the International Science Olympiads, top performing Year 10 and 11
science students must first sit an Australian Science Olympiad Exam in biology, Earth and environmental
science, chemistry and/or physics.
This activity is designed to support students who may be interested in competing in the Australian Science
Olympiad exams.
Streamwatch
Day and Time: Wednesday 1.05pm – 1.35pm

Streamwatch is a community-based environmental program run by the Australian Museum. Year 9 students at
TIGS are trained in the tests before they commence formal testing. Once trained, we test water in American
Creek on a weekly basis. Our test site is adjacent to Cordeaux Heights. Our results are posted on a
Streamwatch web site and form part of a state-wide data base. Students also get the opportunity to do some
macro-invertebrate sampling. Wednesday lunchtime is our timetabled testing time.
Study Skills Help

In study skills help students will be working on developing their information skills to support their learning.
Organisation, note-taking, research and literacy based activities will be undertaken.

The Tertiary Information Evening is a Careers event held at the school which hosts over 750 people. If you are

TIGS Tech provides students from year 7-10 with the opportunity to learn about the various technologies used in
the entertainment industry. Students learn how to use audio, lighting and vision equipment in practical settings
such as school events. The course is also highly beneficial for students thinking of completing the VET
Entertainment course for their HSC.
TIGS Tech is a fantastic opportunity for technologically minded students to share their skills in a fun and friendly
team environment.
Tournament of Minds
Day and Time: Various during Term II and III

Tournament of Minds is an interschool creative problem solving competition. Cross-grade teams of eight
students compete to solve very challenging problems in Maths/Engineering, Language/Literature, Social
Sciences and Applied Technology. The solution to each problem must be a dramatic performance presented
according to strict guidelines of the competition. Training takes place from mid-Term II in preparation for the
competition during the first five weeks of Term III.
