April 23, 2017

Dear Friends in Christ: Quí Ông Bà và Anh Chị Em thân mến trong Chúa Kitô: Estimados Amigos y Amigas en Cristo:

Today we celebrate the Second Sunday of Easter (not the first Sunday after Easter since Easter Sunday was the first Sunday of Easter). The feast of Easter is so important that we celebrate Easter for 50 days, concluding with Pentecost Sunday when the Holy Spirit descended upon the disciples.

Today is known also as Divine Mercy Sunday. When St. Pope John Paul II canonized Sr. Faustina on April 30, 2000, he declared the Second Sunday of Easter to be called Divine Mercy Sunday throughout the Church. The concept of divine mercy is not new. The scriptures are filled with the im-portance of God’s divine mercy. What is “new” is that we have dedicated one Sunday to emphasize the truth of God’s infinite mercy and the forgiveness of sins.

The reality is that we have such a difficult time believing in a loving, forgiving and merciful God. Maybe it is the effects of sin and hurt that we struggle with, knowing we hurt God and others by our sinful actions. Maybe it is our experience that others do not forgive us all the time, and we do not forgive ourselves or others that we struggle to believe that God is willing to forgive us.

The message of The Divine Mercy is simple. It is that God loves all of us, no exceptions! He wants us to recognize that His mercy is greater than our sins, so that we will call upon Him with trust, receive His mercy, and let it flow through us to others. Thus, all will come to share His joy. The Divine Mercy message is one we can call to mind simp-ly by remembering ABC:

A - Ask for His Mercy. God wants us to approach Him in prayer constantly, repenting of our sins and asking Him to pour His mercy out upon us & upon the whole world.

B - Be merciful. God wants us to receive His mercy and let it flow through us to others. He wants us to extend love and forgiveness to others just as He does to us.

C - Completely trust in Jesus. The more we trust in Jesus, the more we will receive.

This Weekend: 2nd Collection—Home Missions

Sister Maria Faustina Kowalska (born 1905, died 1938 at age 33) was a young, uneducated nun in a convent of the Congregation of Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy in Poland during the 1930s. She came from a poor family that strug-gled during the years of World War I. She had only three years of simple education, so hers were the humblest tasks in the convent, usually in the kitchen or garden. However, she received extraordinary revelations — or messages — from our Lord Jesus, specifically about His divine mercy. Jesus asked Sr. Faustina to record these experiences, which she compiled into notebooks in some 600 pages, known today as the Diary of Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska. The words con-tained within are God's loving message of Divine Mercy.

Throughout salvation history, God uses the ‘simple or lowly’ people as His messengers. Yet how many of us think we are too insignificant that God would use us? For such an “uneducated” person, Sr. Faustina wrote some 600 pages on God’s Divine Mercy! Sr. Faustina in her prayers came to understand that a prayer of mercy was to be prayed. That developed into what is now called the Divine Mercy Chap-let, using rosary beads. If you desire to learn how to pray such a chaplet, refer to p. 12 for directions to do so.

Granted, most of us will not influence the world like Sr. Faustina, but we can influence others around us, especially IF we are willing to extend mercy and forgiveness to others. Most people are comforted by the commandment to love as Jesus loves us, though it is a challenge to love all (Jn. 13: 34), But we struggle more with forgiving others. For-giveness is a necessary reality to love. “Then Peter ap-proaching asked him, ‘Lord, if my brother sins against me, how often must I forgive him? As many as seven times?’ Jesus answered, ‘I say to you, not seven times but seventy-seven times’” (Mt. 18: 21-22). This means there is no limit to forgiveness. Remember the words of the Our Father: “And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who tres-pass against us.” Let us pray for peace and healing in our world, nation and families. Pray for wisdom for our leaders!

Homily Nicene Creed

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten not made, con-substantial with the Father; through Him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from Heaven,

(We all are to make a bow of the body during the next 2 lines.) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in ac-cordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the Prophets.

A bow signifies reverence and honor shown to the names or event being mentioned. We are to do the following:

1) A bow of the head is made when the three Divine Persons (the Trinity) are named together and at the names of Jesus, of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and of the Saint in whose honor Mass is being celebrated. 2) A bow of the body (a profound bow) is made during the Creed with the words (and by the Holy Spirit…and became man—highlighted in red words in the Creed). —General Instruction to the Roman

CHRIST IN THE Eucharist

“The Lord Jesus on the night he was betrayed” (1 Cor 11:23) instituted the Eucharistic Sacrifice of his body and his blood. The words of the Apostle Paul bring us back to the dramatic setting in which the Eucharist was born. The Eucharist is indelibly marked by the event of the Lord's passion and death, of which it is not only a reminder but the sacramental re-presentation. It is the sacrifice of the Cross perpetuated down the ages.9 This truth is well expressed by the words with which the assembly in the Latin rite responds to the priest's proclamation of the “Mystery of Faith”: “We announce your death, O Lord”. The Church has received the Eucharist from Christ her Lord not as one gift – however precious – among so many oth-ers, but as the gift par excellence, for it is the gift of himself, of his person in his sacred humanity, as well as the gift of his sav-ing work. Nor does it remain confined to the past, since “all that Christ is – all that he did and suffered for all men – partici-pates in the divine eternity, and so transcends all times”. When the Church celebrates the Eucharist, the memorial of her Lord's death and resurrection, this central event of sal-vation becomes really present and “the work of our redemption is carried out”. This sacrifice is so decisive for the salvation of the human race that Jesus Christ offered it and returned to the Father only after he had left us a means of sharing in it as if we had been present there. Each member of the faithful can thus take part in it and inexhaustibly gain its fruits. This is the faith from which generations of Christians down the ages have lived. The Church's Magisterium has constantly reaffirmed this faith with joyful gratitude for its inestimable gift. I wish once more to recall this truth and to join you, my dear brothers and sis-ters, in adoration before this mystery: a great mystery, a mystery of mercy. What more could Jesus have done for us? Truly, in the Eucharist, he shows us a love which goes “to the end” (cf. Jn 13:1), a love which knows no measure. - Encyclical Letter Ecclesia De Eucharistia of St. Pope John Paul II http://w2.vatican.va/content/john-paul-ii/en/encyclicals/documents/hf_jp-ii_enc_20030417_eccl-de-euch.html

SUNDAY READINGS & BACKGROUNDS__ SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER Reading I : Acts 2:42-47 They devoted themselves to a communal life. •A picture of the early Christian community is given in today’s

first reading from Acts of the Apostles. •The Jerusalem Christians met together with joyful hearts. •The early Christians lived in the reality of new life in Jesus. Reading II : 1 Peter 1:3-9 There is cause for rejoicing here. •The First Letter of Peter is a strong witness to the power of

faith. •The author bursts forth in song, praising God whose gift of

faith is our realization of new life, new birth. •We are delivered from death for life in the Lord. Gospel : John 20:19-31 Peace be with you, he said. •In the Gospel reading, we see more than a Resurrection appear-

ance of Jesus to his disciples; we also see their joy and the transformation of their lives.

•Because of the new courage that followed from their faith, the disciples move from a state of fear to joy.

•The second half of the Gospel depicts Thomas’ struggle to be-lieve in the Resurrection. The passage challenges Christians to do better, to believe without seeing.

Teams of Our Lady Testimony

(Marriage Enrichment)

We have been a part of Teams of Our Lady for several years now. It has been such a blessing for our marriage and our fami-ly. We have truly grown together as a couple, as friends and as life partners. We not only have grown closer to each other but this ministry has helped us grow closer to God and has en-riched our spiritual life together. We have met other couples that have become more like family than just acquaintances. We share a simple meal once a month to pray together, share our ups and downs and help support each other through the many challenges that affect married life today. Please consider join-ing a team. For more info, contact Lenny Morley @ [email protected] or 281-222-0470.

Co-Cathedral Missions Group:

Stewardship Reflections 2nd Sunday of Easter: April 23

“Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, ‘Peace be with you.’” JOHN 20:19 Are you good at making people feel welcome? When you meet someone new, a new neighbor, a new work colleague, a new parishioner, do you make them feel at home? Many of us can proba-bly do a much better job at this. When we make people feel welcome, we make them feel like they are included instead of being excluded. A simple “hello” and a smile goes a long way.

Christian Meditation

Wed. Evenings at 6:30 pm Parish Library On the first floor of the Cathedral Centre.

What is Christian Meditation? Chr istian Meditation is not a study or discussion, but a weekly meeting of Christians coming together to silence their minds/hearts and listen to the

quiet voice of God speaking. After a brief, pre-selected Christian message, participants meditate in silence for about 20 minutes. Meditation is an ancient form of Christian prayer practiced by the saints, and religious communities throughout the world.

Increasing Expenses

While our income has slightly decreased in the last two years, our fixed costs have increased. We have already eliminated one staff position to offset some of these expenses. ♦The parish is now paying 100% of Fr. Lawrence’s compensation. While he was serving as Judicial Vicar, the

parish was responsible for only a portion of his total compensation. ♦The health and dental costs the parish pays for our employees have increased. Beginning last July, our

medical costs for employees increased by 12%, and dental by 5%. This resulted in additional expenses of $14,922 annually. Beginning July 2017, our medical costs will increase by an additional 13%, and our dental by an additional 5%. These increases will cost a minimum of $16,150 more next fiscal year.

♦Priest pension costs continue to rise. July 2017-June 2018 we will need $66,000 to fund our priests’ pensions compared to $21,000 July 2015-June 2016. Therefore, the pension is costing our parish $45,000 more annu- ally than it did in fiscal year 2015-2016. ♦ Water rates are going up 3.4% as of 4/1/17. FYI, low water pressure in the rest rooms & water fountains are beyond our control due to low water pressure from the City of Houston.

The Chaplet of Divine Mercy is recited using ordinary rosary beads of five decades. The Chaplet is pre-ceded by two opening prayers from the Diary of Saint Faustina and followed by a closing prayer.

1. Make the Sign of the Cross In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

2. Optional Opening Prayers You expired, Jesus, but the source of life gushed forth for souls, and the ocean of mercy opened up for the whole world. O Fount of Life, unfathomable Divine Mercy, envelop the whole world and empty Yourself out upon us.

Repeat three times: O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fountain of Mercy for us, I trust in You!

3. Our Father

4. Hail Mary

5. The Apostle's Creed

6. The Eternal Father Eternal Father, I offer you the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your Dearly Beloved Son, Our Lord, Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world.

7. On the Ten Small Beads of Each Decade For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

8. Repeat for the remaining decades Saying the "Eternal Father" (6) on the "Our Father" bead and then 10 "For the sake of His sorrowful Passion" (7) on the follow-ing "Hail Mary" beads.

9. Conclude with Holy God (Repeat three times) Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

10. Optional Closing Prayer Eternal God, in whom mercy is endless and the treasury of compassion — inexhaustible, look kindly upon us and increase Your mercy in us, that in difficult moments we might not despair nor become despondent, but with great confidence submit ourselves to Your holy will, which is Love and Mercy itself.
