CO2 capture processes
Flue gas from the 580 Mwe Unit 4
Burning international coal
Equipped with depollution systems (SCR, ESP, wet-FGD)
Typical functioning of Unit 4 :
5 000 – 5 500 hours per year (208-229 days)
50% - 100 % load

Objectives :
Study the transport of CO2, pure or with impurities, in dense phase
Fill the gap between the scientific knowledge acquired in laboratory and the industrial scale
Gain the required operational experience in order to properly design the future CO2 pipelines
networks for a reliable and safe operation
COOTRANS CO2 Transport Loop – a new
research facility in preparation at Lacq
Industry and academic partners:
Total, EDF, Endress&Hauser, Eon,
ENGIE, GRT Gaz, KSB, Vallourec,

BIOREP - Bio-Reactor under Pressure,
Orléans The BIOREP facility is a high pressure set up to perform
percolation and transfer experiments on fluid-rock
interactions while continuously monitoring geochemical
and bio-geochemical evolution
Conditions typical for CO2 storage or leakage
Experimental conditions: Temperature from -10 to 120°C.
Pressure up to 200 bar. Materials in contact with fluids:
PTFE, PEEK, C276 (Hastelloy) and silica and borosilicate
for the microfluidic cells.
Careful decompression of samples and microorganisms

Microfluidics lab
(microschips):
small volumes safe, better
temperature control
No need for steel, possible use
of non conventional materials
Percolation more realistic
Optical properties non-
destructive observations and
measurements without
decompression
HORIZON 2020
Creation in 1999, operational permit until 2030

GasGeochem lab at Rueil-Malmaison
IFPEN's Geofluids and Rocks department has the equipment and expertise to analyse and interpret the gas molecular and isotopic geochemistry.
The uniqueness of this lab resides in the full integration of data production across different instruments on a single sample aliquot to maximise data consistency.

ESCORT - Mobile Equipment for Soil CO2
ORigin Tracking
The ESCORT monitoring station :
dedicated to the monitoring of natural gas exchange between the atmosphere and the soil vadose zone
may be deployed on pilot or industrial sites for defining soil baseline conditions and monitoring leakage
HORIZON 2020 | © 2 0 1 6 I F P E N
Equipment and data treatment software:
a) continuously recording the soil CO2 flux, the soil gas compositions (CO2, CH4 and O2) at different depths together with relative soil temperatures, water saturations and weather conditions
Rouchon et al., 2011
Rillard et al., 2015
b) statistically correlating the measured parameters to give a precise description of the controlling factors of CO2 production and migration within the soil
