CONTINUING THE WORLD WAR 1 STORIES Malcolm James Cochrane - Malcolm Cochrane was born at Diggora West, the son of William Cochrane of ‘Bellevue’ and attended the Diggora West State School. Malcolm a farmer when he enlisted to serve in in the war on 9 January 1915. Having the Regimental number 1923, he embarked the Horo-rata on 17 April 1915 with the 6th Battalion aged 25. On 30 Au-gust 1916, Lance Corporal Malcolm Cochrane died of wounds and shell shock sustained on the battlefield of Pozieres, France. He is buried in the Etaples Military Cemetery. Edward Jasper - Edward Jasper was the fifth son of Henry and Mary Ann Jasper, born at Wanurp on 4 April 1880. Edward grew up attending the Tennyson State School and later worked as a farmer at Tennyson on the family farm located on the corner of Prairie-Rochester road and Bendigo-Tennyson Road. On 28 February 1916 at the age of 35 years he enlisted for service in Bendigo, originally with the 6th Battalion then joined the 38th Battalion with regimental number was 6042. In June 1917 Edward was wounded in action at Rouen with a gunshot wound to the right foot, then went back to the front in August. On 4 October 1917 while fighting with the 38th Battal-ion, Edward was killed in action at Paschendale, Belguim and is remembered on the Menin Gate Memorial as he has no known grave. His name is also listed on the honour roll in St David’s Church, Milloo. On Sunday 16 December 1917 a memorial service was held at the Milloo Church of England conducted by Rev Plumtree with an “impressive sermon”. The Bendigo Advertiser reported that the congregation comprised 168 people. John McIntyre - One mystery that has evaded proof of who J McIntyre was that appears on the Bamawm Cenotaph of those killed during World War 1 and also listed in the Lockington history ‘Then the Water Wheel Turned’ as missing. John McIntyre, Registration number 4236, enlisted 1 March 1915 in Melbourne. He gave his trade as ‘Clerk’ and his Next of Kin as his mother, Clementina McIntyre of Rochester whose address was care of A McKinley, Rochester. Later he arrived on the Gallipoli Peninsula before going to the European con-frontation. On 16 August 1917 he was listed as missing in Bel-gium. On 11 January 1918 John McIntyre was formally listed as ‘Killed In Action’. In cases of mass deaths in theatres of war, enquiries would be held later to account for missing persons. This is what happened for John McIntyre on 13 December 1917. Many letters of evidence were submitted to say he and H. Robbins were buried after a shell hit where they were sta-tioned and buried them. McIntyre’s brother-in-law, Alexander McKinley, was killed in action 27 September 1917. Clive John Thorne Bunbury - Born and educated in England, Clive Bunbury arrived in Australian when he was 16 years old.

He lived with his parents, Thomas and Laura Bunbury, at ‘The Bungalow’, Ballendella where his father became the Secretary of the local Settlers Association and grew peanuts. Clive’s fam-ily had a military background; his grandfather served as a Cap-tain in the Queen’s Own (50th), a cousin was Provost Marshall in Paris and another cousin was a Major. Clive himself had been a member of the Rochester Light Horse. On 8 July 1915 Clive enlisted with the Australian Imperial Forces, number 5423, and sailed on the Hororata on 27 September 1915. Also on board the same boat was Harry Foster of Ballendella. Clive arrived in Egypt first then continued to Marseilles, France for the European battle. Here he was with the 2nd Field Artillary Brigade as a gunner. Clive was wounded in battle at Messines, Belgium, succumbing to those fatal head wounds on 14 Janu-ary 1918 and is buried in the Irish House Cemetery, Belgium. Clive’s mother passed away later that year and is buried in the Rochester cemetery. In the 1930s when Clive’s father Thomas realised his son’s former address was recorded as Brighton (Thomas’ address in the early 1920s), he complained bitterly to have it changed. Unfortunately it was too late as the registers were in the proc-ess of being printed and today it still shows ‘CJT Bunbury of Brighton’. The Bunbury family must have retained that close affiliation with Ballendella. Vernon Holland - Vernon Holland was born in Bendigo, edu-cated at Marong State School and shifted to Piavella with his parents. Ironically, he is listed in his war service records as being an insurance agent. When war broke out at the start of August 1914 and it appeared New Guinea could be at threat from the Germans, Vernon took little time in enlisting on 18 August 1914. Perhaps at the same time his brother George was also enlisting, or perhaps Vernon returned from the enlist-ment office to tell his brother, as the following day George enlisted. Vernon was aged 23, George 19, so perhaps George returned for his parents’ permission. They were both allocated to the 7th Battalion but different companies. On 19 October they both left Australia’s shores in the Hororata for a battle they knew little of – this was six months before the Gallipoli campaign. The 7th Battalion were some of the first to be landed at Gallipoli on 25 April. Of 140 troops landed, 100 are reported to have been killed. Presuming Vernon and George were in this landing, they both survived. But a later attack on Cape Helles on 8 May 1915 was less fortunate. Vernon was killed in what was a massacre of allied troops. There is no known grave for Vernon but his name is listed on the Helles memorial in Turkey. George survived Gallipoli and went to the Western Front. It was here with a rank of Sergeant during the Battle of Polygon Wood, he was awarded the Military Medal. George survived the war and returned to Australia.

GOT A FUNCTION/EVENT COMING UP??? We, at the Locky News are often requested to attend local functions/events to report on and take photos for articles for our paper...this, however, is becom-ing more impractical for us to do. We are a group of volunteers who give up a whole day every fortnight to putting the paper together for the community, and we simply cannot get to all of the communities functions. I must ask that the executive of each community group appoint someone who is responsible for your own publicity. All we need is a short report and photos if possible. We prefer these be emailed to the office, however USB download is available on typing dates, and items can be hand written and left in the slot at the office, or at the post office if that is all you can provide. Articles in our paper are the cheapest and best publicity you will get...so please make the most of it.

LOCKINGTON GOLF CLUB REPORT SUNDAY 17TH MAY 2015

06/05: The ladies played for one of the important perpet-ual trophies, the Lorna Henderson Canadian Trophy. Winners were Helen Hayes and Kathy Connors with a super score of 98-33.5-64.5. Runners-up were Verna Clymo and Phyl Macfarlane with a fine score of 95-28.5-66.5. The nearest the pin on 17th was won by playing partners Annette Brereton (A Grade) and Kathi Maddison (B Grade). Anne Lowrie (38.5) won the 9-holes event. 08/05: Phyl Macfarlane and Helen Hayes teamed up with Campaspe’s Denise Pappin to win the Yvonne Boyd Bowl at Neangar Park, an excellent achievement by sand-scrape golfers on a grass green course. The event has been going for more than 20 years and is the first time that Lockington golfers have been victorious. With her individual score of 38 stableford points, Phyl won C Grade, and also won a nearest the pin. Helen finished with 37 points, a terrific score as well, and combined with Denise’s score of 29, their great team performance was a memorable day for all. 09/05: Despite the windy weather, a good field played a par event. Good to see 3 players having their first com-petition hits of the season – Ben Dixon, Corey Thomas and Tony Brooke. Kevin Humbert finished with the excel-lent score of +8 to win the Pentreaths Player of the Day voucher. Kevin also won A Grade, ahead of Mat Dennis (+3). B Grade honours went to Darren Carnie (+6), from Ian Haines (+4). A four-way countback was needed to deter-mine the winner in C Grade, with Don Muhleisen (+1) vic-torious from Tony Brooke, Ron Dixon and Jayden Wright. Yardstick balls (next best scores across all grades) – Matt Baulch (+3), James Hodgens (+2), Rick Connors, Ron Dixon and Jayden Wright (all +1). Nearest the pins: 16th – Kevin Humbert; 2nd shot 5th – Grant Humbert; 2nd shot 18th for the 6-pack smack – James Hodgens. The Echuca CIH eagles nest prize on the 3rd wasn’t won. The yardstick prize was finally won, when Kevin Humbert unleashed a mighty straight shot to finish within a yard of the hole on the 16th to win the $200. Roy Perks was the last golfer to win the yardstick, and that was back in July 2011. Three first round matches of the handicap matchplay championships were played on the day. The thriller was between James Hodgens and Jayden Wright, a match that ebbed and flowed before Jayden prevailed on the 19th – and celebrated with a loud yell and a double bent-knee, double fist-pump. It was a war of attrition between Grant Humbert and Travis Mancer. After Travis won the 11th and 12th to go 1-up, Grant then won the next 3 holes and ultimately held on to win 2&1. Gun matchplay player Terry Thomas was in ominous form, victorious 5&3 over Jeff Carnie. 13/05: The ladies played their first round of the Club Championships in unpleasantly cold conditions. Pen-treaths Supermarket Player of the Day and winner of the Monthly Medal was Sherryl Jones with a terrific 88-19-69. Sue Harris was runner-up in A Grade with 98-25-73. B Grade was super competitive, but victory went to the red-hot in form Phyl Macfarlane 103-32-71, just ahead of Jenny Holt and Lois Chugg (both 72) and Kath Connors (73). Count the putts: A Grade – Sherryl Jones (28); B

Grade – Lois Chugg (29). Anne Lowrie won the 9-holes event. Sherryl Jones leads Annette Brereton by one shot in the race for the Club Champion title. In B Grade Lois Chugg and Jenny Holt are the joint leaders by one shot from Phyl Macfarlane. 16/05: The first preliminary round of the Lockington Golf Club Championships was played in magnificent golfing weather, by the biggest field of the season and some ap-propriately hot scores were returned. Bruce Haines was the star of the day, returning a brilliant 87-26-61 to win the Pentreaths Supermarket Player of the Day voucher, as well as the Privilege Cup and C Grade honours. Next best in C Grade were Don Muhleisen (91-25-66) and Laurie Stewart (97-31-66 – good effort for his first hit of the season). Matt Baulch finished with the great score of 81-19-62 to win B Grade, ahead of Rick Connors (85-21-64). A Grade honours went to James Hodgens with an excellent 79-15-64, just in front of Brett Stone (73-8-65). Other good scores to win a ball were returned by Ian Haines (65), Barry Graham (66), Andrew Harris and Travis Mancer (both 67), Terry Thomas and Darren Car-nie (68). Gartside Cup qualifiers – Bruce Haines, Matt Baulch, James Hodgens; standby – Rick Connors. Nearest the pins: 17th – Blake Humbert (first ever NTP, well done); 2nd shot 11th – Brett Stone; 2nd shot 18th for the 6-pack smack – Grant Humbert. The Echuca CIH eagles nest on the 3rd wasn’t won. The captain’s yardstick on the 16th hadn’t won been won for nearly 4 years until last Saturday when it was won by Kevin Humbert. Amazingly it was won again on Satur-day, this time by Don Muhleisen, who finished within a foot of the hole – and won the princely sum of $15. Club Championships leaders after Saturday: A Grade – Grant Humbert 72, Brett Stone 73, Andrew Harris, Terry Thomas, James Hodgens (all 79). B Grade – Matt Baulch 81, Ian Haines 82, Travis Mancer, Barry Graham, Rick Connors (all 85). C Grade – Bruce Haines 87, Don Muhleisen 91, Ian Scurrah, Laurie Stewart, Jeff Carnie (all 97). Veterans (nett) – Bruce Haines 61, Rick Connors 64, Barry Graham, Don Muhleisen, Laurie Stewart (all 66). 17/05: The Kelly Shield was contested at Mitiamo by 6 district clubs. The Locky ladies team of Sue Harris, Helen Hayes and Phyl Macfarlane finished equal runners-up behind the winning Pyramid Hill team. Sue Harris had a magic tee shot on the 11th to win the nearest the pin (and sunk the birdie putt). The mens team of Ray Brereton, Tom Scurrah, Travis Mancer, Steve Holt, Andrew Harris and Kevin Humbert were runners-up behind the runaway winners Mitiamo. Kevin Humbert played some terrific golf to finish up with 74-11-63, the second best scratch score on the day. Golfers are warmly invited to the Club’s Annual Tourna-ment , which will commence on Tuesday 19th May with a Ladies 4BBB event (assembly 9.30am, hit off 10am). Other events are: Ladies 18 holes Stroke Open Champi-onship Thursday 21st May (assembly 9.30am, hit of 10am); 4BBB for men Friday 22nd May (hit off 10.30am – 12 noon); Mixed American Saturday 23rd May (hit off 11am – 12 noon); 36 Holes Stroke Open Champion-ship for Men Sunday 24th May.
