We continued to meet with government officials and advise them on our policy work, and our upcoming campaign to reinstate a federal Chief Nurse as part of our Nursing Now Canada campaign.   Going forward I hope we see as many of you as possible at our fall consultations where we are seeking feedback on our ongoing Strategy, Governance, and Branding work. New! Canada-wide assessment of occupational stress injuries among nurses (opened until September 30, 2019)

The Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions joined with expert researchers at the University of Regina to launch the first anonymous Canada-wide assessment of occupational stress injuries among nurses.

Please forward this message on to your members.

Stressed? Exhausted? Traumatized? Tell us more.

Every day, nurses face stressful and emotional situations at work. But there is no reliable national data on nurses’ workplace stress.

That’s why the Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions joined with expert researchers at the University of Regina to launch the first anonymous Canada-wide assessment of occupational stress injuries among nurses.

Through this study, we hope to support strategies and resources to build safer and healthier workplaces for nurses across the country.

That’s where you come in.

To be successful, we need to hear from as many nurses as possible. Regardless of your mental health status, your responses and experiences will help everyone in need.

The more nurses who participate, the more weight our collective voice will have in fostering better mental health for all nurses in Canada.

CNA Federal Election Update

The next federal election will take place on October 21, 2019. CNA is calling on all nurses to get involved and have a say this election. We ask that you also promote CNA’s call for involvement in your organization and through your networks for nurses to:

Engage political candidates Write a letter: Download and

send CNA’s form letter to political parties and candidates

Attend events: CNA is hosting events across Canada with political candidates

Join the conversation on social media #CNA2019.

You have many more ways to get your voice heard during the federal election beyond marking a ballot and our toolkit can help!

CNA has a federal election platform and conducted polling, both can be found on our election website, https://elections.cna-aiic.ca/en.

CNA is also hosting town halls across Canada; New Brunswick October 1 and

Winnipeg October 7. The town halls are open to the public and will be set up in a moderated panel format with federal political candidates and local experts to talk about health-care. For more information and to RSVP click here.

Chief Nursing Officer for Canada

On August 28, 2019, CNA sent a letter to the Prime Minister of Canada (see attached) asking for the reinstatement of the position of Chief Nursing Officer for Canada by May 2020, when the next meeting of the World Health Assembly will be held in Geneva. The chief nurse position was abolished during the past decade, leaving Canadians without a recognizable senior nurse to work directly with provincial and territorial government nursing leaders and to act as a governmental liaison with the Canadian Nurses Association and other nursing leadership groups nation-wide. CNA will follow-up with the federal government on this appeal after the federal election.

Council of the Federation 2019 Summer Meeting

Between July 9-11, 2019, CNA’s president-elect, Tim Guest, attended the 2019 Council of the Federations (CoF) Summer Meeting in Saskatoon. Each year all 13 provincial and territorial Premiers meet to work collaboratively to strengthen the Canadian federation by fostering constructive relationships and discuss top of mind issues.

A variety of issues were discussed at this years CoF meeting including increasing the Canada Health Transfer, affordable prescription drugs, mental health and addiction, cannabis and vaping, and climate change. CNA released a statement outlining the conversations, outcomes and next steps.
