CMYK is a limited color space

Image created in rgbImagine you have created thisimage on your computer in rgb color space.

Download the file “21. Samplein rgb.tif” under downloads on www.cmykguide.com.

In this document the image isconverted to cmyk, to be prin-ted in offset – or on your inkjet or laser printer.

See the difference between the screen view in rgb and thecmyk print on paper.

When you compare the cmykto the rgb you clearly see thatthe cmyk color space is verylimited.

There is no power in the cmykcolors, when you see both sam-ples at the same time.

Two worldsComparing the additive andthe subtractive systems is per-haps not fair. It is two differentworlds. For example, cyan andmagenta do not have the samenuance i rgb and cmyk – theyare brigther and more pure in rgb. More power.

The additive systemThe rgb (additive) system islight only, directly from thescreen to your eyes.

The rgb additive color space is very large, and almost all colors can be created here.

The subtractive systemThe cmyk (subtractive) system is pigments printed on paper to be reflected and filtered by light. The cmyk subtractivecolor space is limited and many colors cannot be createdin this color space.

The pigments and the reflec-tions are partly why the cmyk color space is smallerthan the rgb color space.

2

The original image “21. Sample in rgb.tif” is created in Adobe Photoshop using the working space Adobe RGB (1998). The rgb file is converted to cmyk using the ISO Coated v2 (ECI) and the rendering intent is set up to perceptual.

Rgb is the additive color system creating colors by light.

Cmyk is the subtractive color system creating colors by pigments.

The cmyk gamutWhen you create a rgb coloroutside the cmyk color spaceand converte the color to beprinted in cmyk, the color is to be contracted to the cmykgamut.

It means that your softwarehave to contract some colors to a color space where the colors do not excist!

The bright green sample in r-g-b 0-255-0 is contracted to c-m-y-k 81-1-89-0.

This is how it works and if it is not satisfactory, you have to print the green color as a fifth special color.

Still, you have a problem whenthe image is to be printed in a magazine printed only incmyk!

It is a great limitation and you cannot do anything about it.

3

When you create the rgb color code 0-255-0 in Adobe Photoshop you at the same time get the values of CMYK, LAB, HSB and HEX.Note the Lab value in the a-axis is -128.

Color codes

Color settings– rendering intentOn this page the green rgb color is contracted to the cmyk color space using four differentrendering intents.

Above here you have the fourdifferent separations in cmyk.

PerceptualIn general the perceptual ren-dering intent is the most usedwhen rgb images are to be separated to cmyk.

4

1. Perceptual. 3. Relative colorimetric.

2. Saturation. 4. Absolute colorimetric.

In the Adobe Photoshop Lab color space the values in the a and b axes are from -128 to 127.

Adobe Photoshop Lab color spaceThe six rgb colors from thefront page image are hereplaced in the Adobe PhotoshopLab color space.

The circular area is the gene-ral CIE Lab diagram from -100 to 100 in the a and b axes.

Read about the CIE Lab colorspace in “1. CMYK GUIDE – CIE Lab color space.pdf” onwww.cmykguide.com underdownloads.

The rgb colors are to be con-tracted to the cmyk color spaceto be printed in cmyk.

This shows how small the cmykcolor space is, when you com-pare to the CIE Lab color space. This also shows why you cannotget all colors printed in cmyk!

On the following pages the rgbcolors are converted to cmyk, using different renderingintents.

The rgb image separated to cmyk. The rendering intent is set up to perceptual.

The colors here are best match from the Triangle Colorscale® CMYK GUIDE. The colors are choosen from a graphic designer’s personal point of view.

Your choiceWhen you create colors to beprinted in cmyk, you shouldnot choose colors from a screenview in a color space outsidethe cmyk gamut.

Instead, choose colors from thenatural environment of cmyk:printed colors on paper.

In the Triangle Colorscale®CMYK GUIDE you have a very realistic reference of what actually can be printed on paper in cmyk.

CMYK XTRAIn the Triangle Colorscale®CMYK XTRA you have a greattool expanding the cmyk colorspace.

CMYK XTRA – the easy way to HIFI colorsThe Triangle Colorscale®CMYK XTRA Highline matte is the easy way to begin print-ing HIFI colors.

To expand the cmyk color space you simply print thedominating basic color twice. This expands the color spacesignificantly.

Perhaps you have printed adeep-red car in cmyk only tosee how the colors died.

Double magenta brings backlife to your car.
